I'm making my first quilt and it's for my nephew. I used a sewing machine to sew lots of items in my younger years. However, I'm intimadated by trying to quilt on the sewing machine. What are thoughts on tying a quilt vs. machine quilting? Any help would be appreciated.

For a small child, I always tie quilts. I learned my lesson the hard way, lol...kids are hard on quilts! I do love machine quilting though, especially if you have decorative stitches on your machine - mine has a wavy stitch that I just LOVE to quilt with. It's very fast.

i machine quilt them all, meandering or stitch in the ditch works great for kids quilts, but NEVER USE THE INVISIBLE THREAD on kids ones, to dangerous. i have several that have been used and abused and had no problems with them.

I've made quite a few quilts for kids and always quilt them. No problems at all & some are 20 yrs old & very loved. My Mom made all her gk's quilts & they are still going strong.

Personally I am very fond of tying my quilts. They also stand quite well through many washings. I haven't ever machine quilted anything before and am very nervous about trying. I have even made full and kingsize quilts and tied them. Just my 2 cents... :re: :re:

Debby you must give it whirl :bg: , once you get over the nervousness, you will love it, every project i have that nevous feeling (maybe some year it will go away lol) start on a small thing, and get the feel for it, and wear goves or fingertips so your hands grip the top.

The quilt I'm making is for my 12 year old nephew who has a twin size bed. I guess that's why I hesitate to machine quilt it, even though my friends have said that machine quilting is quicker. I don't think I have the patience to try to get a big wad of fabric in the sewing machine with very little working area between needle and machine. If I decide to tie, what kind of thread should I use? Some of the books I've read said that embrodiery thread is good. Also, is there a favorite kind of knot I should use? I'd like something a little different, but easy, from a surgeon's knot.

i just have a regular Janome and i have done queen sizes in mine, a good support for the quilt and a good hight for quilting make it a WHOLE lot easier to quilt, the back and shouolders are not strained that way.

The last quilt I tied I used differnt colors of yarn that had special meaning for the lady I made it for. I just used a surgeons knot. Good luck with it!

Exactly what is the right height for the sewing machine? I truly don't know, and there is one thing I DO know, is using my sewing machine on the dining table probably doesn't help my back much huh? :re:

I have two lap quilts that I have thought about machine quilting because it would be faster. When hand quilting, you start in the center of the quilt and work toward the outside. When machine quilting and doing the meandering stitch, do you start in the center of the quilt? As you can see I have no idea where to begin once it has been sandwiched. Guess that it why they are still sitting there waiting for me to do something.

I want to get started on them as soon as I finish the one I am working on. I am hand quilting the center square and tying with square knots (I hope) in the sashing for the rest of it. It is a redwork that has machine embroidered centers.

I surely will appreciate any instruction on the meandering stitch.

Thank you.

I just found a post by HeyJudee who gave some links reference machine quilting. They were most helpful and now I have an answer to my question above.

Appreciate you all.

I have machine quilted using cotton batting, cotton/poly blend and polyester batting. I think most quilters prefer to use a cotton batting. I like the cotton batting when doing free motion quilting and I like the cotton batting for wall hangings as I find it hangs better. But the type of batting I choose sometimes depends on the purpose of the quilt and on the amount of quilting I plan on doing.

we all have our preferences for batting - mine is low loft wool, then cotton. Today I have been quilting a top and I just used polar fleece for the back - cant be too bad as 18 DD just got home from school and liked it she is my greatest critic 'cause she likes to quilt too.
Re tying a quilt I would do what ever you enjoy doing the most. Any one tried the charm machine tacks ?- same effect as tying I guess only with a cute cat, dog, bow etc or I supplose you could use a fancy stitch on your machine like the heart shape, little ducks crocodiles etc

I have made one quilt, and am working on another, and I am machine quilting both of them. The first one is finished. It is a single-bed size, and done for one of my small grandsons but his mother didn't put it on his bed. She hung it on the wall beside his bed. It is a picture/story quilt: The Owl & the Pussycat. The owlwith his guitar and the cat with the honeypot are sitting in the boat, which is sage green, and the sail is lime green with a red and white flag above it, and white lace foam waves on a blue background beneath the boat. There is part of an island showing at the left side and a pink pig with a gold ring in its nose is looking out from between the bong trees and there are stars and a crescent moon up above. The entire background ina medium shade of blue. It is all applique. The cat is black and white velvet; the owl is a variegated piece of brown velvet; the guitar is tan; the honeypot is yellow; the moon is white; and the stars are gold and silver lame`. All this is outline quilted with several rows of stitching but the rest of the blue background is a curvy wave stitch. I enjoyed doing it although it is a little difficult with all that fabric, batt, and backing and Rush Dean, who was four at the time loved it! I am working on a calendar quilt now for another daughter. It has the same basic house every square, but somewhat different backgrounds and decorations in each. Have to get 2 squares finished and then the top will be done. I have a new idea about how to quilt it more easily, which I will try out next year. This current coffeecup smiley is dull. I'm not going to use it. MariLynntx
