You need to use a stitch that takes about four or five stitches then juts out with one zig (no zag) stitch. Like ----^---
Finish the edge of the hem by serging or turning under or even zig zag. What ever you like.
Fold up the hem -- I press it nice and sharp. Now turn it back so the hem is laying under the garment and about 1/4 inch or 1 cm. of the finished edge sticks out.
You stitch so the ---- part is on the finished edge and the ^ reaches out and grabs a couple threads of the garment. Then you flatten it back out and press it.
It is especially useful to have a special foot with a guide that runs along the fold where the ^ grabs the fabric.
I hope that makes some sense.
I don't think I would do a blind hem stitch up the slit in the skirt though, just along the bottom. It is worth learning to do because it saves a ton of time over hand stitching and if a stitch comes out the whole hem doesn't follow.

The manual on your machine should tell you how to set your machine for the blind hem, and also have an illustration about what to do with your fabric to make it work. Then you do test pieces until you feel confident.
