I have a tapestry that a friend's daughter got in Italy on her honeymoon. She asked me to sew binding around it and tabs on top for hanging. Do I also need to put a backing on it? |

I really doubt it but I would perhaps add a sleeve on the bottom so it would hang straight and flat.

I have a beautiful tapestry that was bought for me 42 years ago. It was all hand made & has fringe on either side. Mine has to have a backing put on it or the sewing would come through onto the front side & ruin it. It's worth a great deal of money plus you wouldn't want that anyway. I'd hand sew a good cotton backing & add the tabs on top & a tube on the bottom. On mine I want tubes on both ends as it is large & I want the weight not pull from the top. Just my ideas on mine.I'll hand sew the backing on & machine sew the tubes before I attache it to the tapestry. If you don't want a rod at the bottom you can put a dowel with a little weight to it in the bottom tube so it won't show. Or sew some little pockets at the bottom & add some weights in each one. Washers would work also for weights. Dry cleaners will not clean the better tapestries so dust them often with the vac. brush. I put an old nylon over my brush. |
