I'm trying to do some free motion quilting on my Brother ULT 2002D. I have dropped my feed dogs, the embroidery foot is on the machine, I'm using a 90/14 Singer needle and I have also tried with an Organ 75/11. I'm using the larger needle because I'm quilting through fused fabrics.. I'm using machine quilting thread on the top and in the bobbin. I have set my stitch length to the maximum length. I have also tried sewing with the shortest length. My batting is cotton batting, I don't recall what brand. Whatever Joann's has on the large bolts for $9.99 per yd. The problem is when I'm moving in the same direction as the machine would sew with the feed dogs up, everything is OK, but when I reverse direction, I get skipped stitches. This happens know matter what speed I'm sewing. Anyone out there know what would cause this to happen? I do appreciate any help anyone can give me! Dawn P |

Dawn you might want to loosen your top tension just a little so it doesn't pull on your bobbin thread and also, it doesn't matter what stitch length you set on your machine when you're doing free motion quilting because you're the one that decides the length of the stitches by how you move the quilt. I think Diane G recommends that you set your stitch length on zero. Free motion quilting just takes practice, practice, practice. Marti Michelll has a good book "Learn to Machine Quilt In Just One Weekend" that has a fairly good section on machine quilting but the queen of free motion machine quilting is Diane Gaudynski (sp?). In fact, I'm going to go to JoAnn's and see if they have her book on free motion quilting and use my 40% off coupon this week. Don't get discouraged, remember it's practice, practice, practice to become good at machine quilting. Patsy Patsy

What Patsy says - practice and practice some more Last year I bought some quilting fabirc with a baby theme - shop was closing and some fleece and used these to as practice quilts - spray basted with the odd pin and I just moved in big sweeping loops on one and I was getting pretty even stitches towards the end, on the second I tried to follow a pattern which was another learning curve and again I started to get that right when I was running out of quilt to do I also had problemd with grip and used my washing up gloves which helped I now have those cotton gloves with little rubber suckers on bought at the local hardware store for $0.95 sure bets the $30 at the quilt store. Also having a large flat area helps to move the fabric more easily no drag -so happy practicing Skye |

I've been machine quilting for quite some years, so the problem is not me. It is my machine. The top thread is not catching the bobbin thread for some reason and it's only happening when I sew backwards. I guess I should take it to the shop to have someone look at it. Thanks anyway, ladies. It just seems to be a problem with free motion quilting. My machine does have a reverse stitch and when I've used it, it has worked fine. I bought some quilting needles yesterday, so I'm going to see if that works. If not, I'll ask the Brother dealer/repair person and see what he says. Dawn |
