I forgot to ask a question last week. To many hours at work and a headache that wouldn't quit. So lets do two for this week.
We all have a name we were given at birth. Your name, does it mean something? Were you named after someone, do you like your name, do you use your middle name, do you use a nickname for your real name? Let us all know what the background is for your real name.
Now the second question for this is your screenname. How did you come about it?

My 'real' name is Kathy....hate it..always have....20 million girls born in the 50's have the name Kathy, in one form or another. There were at LEAST 2 OTHER Kathy's, Cathie's, Kathie's in EVERYONE of my school classes.
But since my last name starts with an A, I was always first...(whoop-de-do)
I prefer to go by Kath. (my grandfather always called me that...as did most of my family) I don't use my middle name, hate it too....same reason as the Kathy part. (Lynn...there has to be 20 million of THIS combination too and when I hear them both together I cringe inside).

Chrysantha has been my user name for 20 yrs now (really). I will often answer to Chrys, if people 'know' me in 'real life' and online too. It's short for chrysanthemum. (the royal family of Japans crest...I've always been 'hot' for anything Japanese)

(weird fact....at EVERY AF base we've been to (in 21 yrs)...there has always been a couple with mine and my husbands SAME name...even in MT, where it was actually NO base, but the town had one couple with our names....the only difference in most of the names, was my husbands MIDDLE name, which is SO weird NO one else has it...it's ILO...yep..family name... :whacky: )

My whole name is Nancy Lyn. I was named after my mother who was named after her mother (my mom is Nancy Ruth, my grandma is Ruth Luella). So...to keep things going, I named my middle child Jason Lyn and his daughter is Alicia Lynn. Don't particularly care for the Nancy part so have always used Lyn -altho I'm sure it started out as Lyn so as not to confuse people with my mom, etc. My only problem with my middle name is no one ever spells it correctly-used to drive me crazy, now it only does when people I've known for years still spell it incorrectly!

As for my screen name, I'm an RN and esrun is nurse spelled backwards. The 3 was because when I first starting using it there were others using the esrun part.

My real name is -- guess what -- Dorothy!!!
I have never had a dog named Todo. But I do like Judy Garland.
I never really liked or disliked my name, it just is my name. I do get a little tired of the Oz jokes. When I was younger I always thought of it as an older person's name but now I am an older person and it suits.
People do NOT call me Dot or Dotty or any other shortened form. They never have. Sometimes someone will ask "Does anyone ever call you Dotty?" and I generally reply "Not to my face."
As for how I got my screen name -- you figure it out.

Hi! I'm new here but I'll play too :)
My real name is Wendy Jo. I usually just go by Wendy. Jo is also my mom's middle name. There weren't too many other Wendy's around while I was growing up. The only thing I don't like about my name is the constant "Wendy's Restaurant" jokes, no, my dad's name is NOT Dave!

I usually use some variation of Wendy as my screen name on other boards (depending what is available) but thought of "Sews4kate" when I registered here the other day. My dd is Katelyn and I sew stuff for her mainly :)

First name, Suzanne. Not many people know that tho. I am known simply as Sue. Once in awhile someone might slip a Susan past me but if you want to see me roll my eyes just try calling me Suzy. Middle name is Mary, I huryt my Mom's feelings once by telling her I really didn't like my full name. I told her when said together it sounded like it fell off a cliff....Suzanne Mary, kerplunk. I still think it sounds way too formal for me but I would never say anything like that again to hurt my Mom's feelings.
My screen name comes from the fact that I am a Grandma Sue. Those 2 "baby" girls give me unending joy and fill my heart with such love that I proudly wear the Grandma title
Grandma Sue

At the end I am not showing up at my grave all pretty and well preserved...I am coming in sliding, yelling "What a ride!"

Janice - "gracious gift of God" Margaret "a pearl" most people call me Jan and assume it stands for Janet - heigh ho.
My ever loving husband called me Janice (and still does) for 14 years before he noticed that when I introduce myself to people I call myself Jan.

The Magot is a corruption of Margaret - a name I abhore. Don't know why, family were royalists and I get named after the Princess - happens all the time.

I like to think that the Magot means that I am still an the caterpillar stage of life - still feeding and growing - and when I grow up (die) I will be transformed into a new glorious type of creation which still is recognisable as the original. The Ultimate Makeover! I've been Magot for 29 years now...

Kids at school call me Mrs Johns (not my name in fact) or Hodge Podge or the lady in the cupboard...drawing a veil over that we move swiftly on to the next candidate..
love and kisses, Jan

My real name is Summer and it stands for growth. Summer is the time of growth, when all things come alive. When the earth is warm and welcoming. I was not named after anyone, I was named after an idea that I too would grow and be a welcoming person. As a child I would get tease, and I had teachers comment on my name. At times it hurt but I lived through it and became who I am today.
Echos comes from the fact that all people leave an echo of themselves in you. I hope all the echos I leave are good ones.

My name is Linda Sue. Was called Linda Sue all through school. (that is a Texas thing...everyone has two names and are called by them) My grandmother and my brother named me. My Uncle gave me the nick name of Susie. He returned from the service not knowing I was even here. The door bumped my crib and I cried and he picked me up and said "Hi ya Susie." Guess it was a good thing I was a girl. My grandmother wouldn't call me Susie for a long time. I have been known as Sue since I left school.

I chose my list name for lack of creativity. I was supposed to be Janice, but for some reason my grandmother sent telegrams to everyone to say Nancy Joyce had arrived. Everyone in my family has Joyce, Jean, or Mildred in their name. I'm glad I got the Joyce. My daughter's name is Jennifer Jean, which everyone seems to think is after one of my best friends. I try not to clarify this.

My first name is Lori. My middle name was supposed to be Lee, but I was born on a great Aunt's birthday and was given the middle name Ann after her. Growing up, she always gave the kids in our church a quarter on their birthday. She gave me a dollar. :bg:
Even at my age, when I hear the two names together.... LoriAnn!.. I still think I'm in trouble. :bluewink:
I picked my user name because 1) I'm from Alabama, and 2) it was about the 25th name I tried and it worked.

As a cake decorator I came across a LOT of weird names..people really have NO idea when they name their children what they're doing. (in some cases)

Kali (blood goddess) (for a little girl...poor thing)

Chimera (a grotesque monster)(another poor little girl)

Wintress (young woman)( I asked her mother one time why, but the woman looked at me like I was insane....)

SugarBear(another young woman...and NO it was NOT a nick name I asked)

Girly (true first name of someone I went to school with...)

My real name is Judith and I was named by my godmother, Bessie, who was a war bride from Manchester, England. She was quite a lady....she met my uncle during the war and came over alone by boat to marry him in 1946 or 47. She left all of her family in England and she never went back - was afraid if she did she wouldn't return to Canada. She died five years ago at 82.

I have always had the nickname Judy but when my brother was first starting to talk he couldn't say Judy and started calling me Dude, which got switched to Jude as he grew older. So he always said "Hey, Jude"...even before the Beatles made their song. When I went to join the board, I wanted to use it but when I checked the names it was already used. So I decided to add an "e" as play on Judy instead of becoming another number.

"Naomi"- The Book of Ruth in the Bible, it means "pleasantness".
" Jane"- is after my sister-in-laws younger sister, Jannie. Our mothers where best friends growing up, so my brother and Sister-in-law, where semi-childhood sweethearts. We lived in two different states.
I was named after an old girlfriend of my dads. Mom said that she was a very nice person to everyone, even helped my parents elope!!!
My maiden name is a very famous Night spot in LA that a movie was made about with Will Farrell. My married name is a Piano Company!!!
I'm always singing and love to sew. This is when I am the happiest. That's how I came up with "Sewhappie" I just changed the "y" to "ie" just to be different.

My given name is Violet, hated it most of life now I'm indifferent to it. Friends and co-workers call me Vi but most of my family call me Violet. I was named after my Great-Aunt. Hate my middle name, won't mention it, and they picked that for my Dad's favorite sister....who I loved too.

My daughter likes unusual, but nice, names and her kids are Kadri Rainne (girl) and the boy is Joven Wolf. The other daughter is not new-age at all and her son is Jack.

My given name is "Patsy Louise" -- uggggh!!! Patsy, I understand, was the name of the wife to the doctor that delivered me???? Go figure on that one??? and my mother's middle name is Louise. I also have a niece with the middle name of Louise. Her father named her after a famous stripper! She got a lot of teasing by her uncles and her brother when she was a little girl. My initials are plr and I've been a legal secretary/legal assistant for more years than I care to think about (about 30 or so years now); when I first went on line I wanted "legal beagle" but, of course, it was taken so I used plrlegal and that's who I've been for about the last 10 years. My dh also only uses my given name when we're out and he's forced to use it , otherwise I'm known as honey, punkie or "mommy" to our little 4 legged girl. I don't think I ever heard my mother use my full given name -- she called me Pat and when she meant business, she called me Patty. When she used Patty, I knew that my life might well be coming to an end. LOL

Speaking of names -- My daughter met another Amber the other day. When my Amber said her middle name is Rose the other one said "My parents say they were going to name me Amber Rose but decided not to because it sounds too much like a hooker."
My Amber decided to consider it funny rather than offensive.

:pc: My first name is Lori, my middle name is Ann (like every other female named in the 70's). I think my first name is a pretty good one, except that I hated that everyone usually wants to spell it L A U R I E. I am the FIRST grandchild in the family and my grandmother spelled it that way until I pointed it out to her a few years ago (I am almost 33). My first name is better than "Elivira" or "Vera" in which I would have been named after the grandmother I never had the chance to meet. When I was a little girl and playing around I always wanted to be called Nicole. Some people think Lori is short for Lorraine or Loretta, but it isn't. I hated being teased by being called Lawrence, Lora-bell, or little Lori. I have never had any nicknames, unless you consider hating Lora-bell and not complaining about it. I hate answering the phone and people asking my name or if I announce my name they always think I am saying "Glory" instead of "Lori". I talk on the phone alot for my job so usually I have to over pronunciate my name to avoid this. I dislike my middle name... because it is too common.

I picked a new screen name for this board because I am a little of THIS and THAT. I enjoy being a girly girl, but enjoy alot of other activities too that might not be considered girly (example - I ride motorcycles and sometimes shoot guns for sport). My very first screen name 20 years ago was "Adventurer" because they asked for a "handle" on one of the d-dials I joined and I didn't know what one was (I was only 13).

As far as names go... My mother's name is "Bonnie" and I don't like it either (LOL) - but I love her very much! :bg:

My real name is Shirley Jean and I've always hated the Shirley. My dad wanted to name me Shirley and my mom wanted to name me Kathy, and my dad won. I really never use the Jean part, except when I ignore my son, he calls me Shirley Jean. LOL

My screen name was given to me by my dear friend, Jenny, as an ongoing joke we have between us. That's what she calls me, more than by my name.
I am 12 years older than her and she thinks it's funny.

Hi, I'm new also & of course I want to play. My name is Linda Lou--can you believe it??? Like all girls born in the 1940's. At one time there were 9 girls named Linda in one of my school classes. Thank God, I never told anyone my middle name---wedgied for sure!!! I have never had a nickname--always called Linda. However, my alter ego is named Camille, which is who I really am--glamourous & artistic--in my dreams anyway.

We were bored at work one day and I mentioned that I really wasn't happy with my name so everyone in the office tried to think of what I should be renamed - nothing suited me at all. You know how people sort of suit their names, or don't, well I gave up after that and decided I was meant to be a Violet - but not a shrinking one that's for sure.

My name is Mary Elizabeth. for my paternal GrandMother. I never knew her.. She died when my Dad was 12 or so.. The name is traditional in the family and the first one was named from the Bible.. For the Mother of Jesus (Mary) and her cousin Elizabeth (the mother of John the Baptist).. My Dad told Mom they could not call me Mary because that was what they called his mother.. My Mom said Elizabeth was too much for a baby, so they called me Lib almost from the beginning..

I'm a Laura Lynn, my sister named me Laura after my grandmother. My mom wanted to call me Roberta Lynn after some dancer (?) she admired in the 30's, but dad vetoed that. My grandmother always called me Laura but I grew up as Laurie to the rest of the family until I met my 2nd husband. He has called me Laura from day 1 so I go by both names, but Laurie is only for people who knew me before Rob. We have a silly thing where to get people to remember our names we mention 'the Dick Van Dyke Show' - Rob and Laura Petrie. This is met with blank stares with the younger crowd. But the funniest thing was a friend called one day laughing hysterically, she had tried to look us up in the phone book and couldn't find us until she realized she was looking under 'Petrie'.

Nicknames, other than Laurie, dad called me Schnooks. DH calls me Pookie for some unknown reason. I always wanted to be a Laurel, sounded tall, willowy and gentle.

Online name - Bride's mom. When I first found this forum my DD was getting married and I was making the dress. Hence the name. Not too exciting. I have other online names seems I use a new one for each place I go.

My first name is Patricia and I would never even let on my middle name. My family always called me Patsy and also in school until I went to Jr. High I quickly changed that to Pat. When I married my DH he changed me back to Patsy again!! We have 11 Grandchildren and 4 Step Grandchildren half of whom call me Nanny, The other half call me Nana. That accounts for my sign on name. I probably should have have used Nannynana!!! This is a great thread. I am kind of new on this board and it gives you a way of getting to know who you are talking to!

I know this is an older thread so I hope no one minds me adding to it. I was very interested in the content and I just have to add my story. I am named Charity (means love) LaVerne (means Spring). I'm sure you can all imagine the kind of hell I grew up with with that name. People always asking me if they could donate to 'Charity' or some such silly things and heaven forbid they found out my middle name! I would almost always get "Where's Shirley?" Which I would then reply, she's probably at home (my godmother is named Shirley). Being teased about my first name brought about any number of manglings, Cherry, Chastity, Cherokee, Chariott, Chair(hate that one really bad), and many more. I also have to over pronunciate my name over the phone otherwise NO one understands my name. I was also born with a Polish maiden name starts with a Y so I was always last in school and NO ONE could pronounce it. My poor children were born before I was married so they have my maiden name as a last name and I can always tell when I take them to the doctor that they are about to be called back, the poor nurse just stands there looking dumbly at the paper for a couple of minutes. My son is Marshall Ashe (initials spell May). My daughter is AnnMarie Michayla (initials spell Amy which is what everyone calls her. I tried very hard to make sure their names couldn't be picked on tha bad, but I failed. I think every name has a way to be messed up and abused. My poor son get called Marshmellow at times and he hates that. He just started 3rd grade and decided to start going by Ashe which I am afraid as he gets older will begin sounding like a bad word (another word for a donkey). Anyway, that's my real name.

My screen name Jayde, that came from jade but have to spell it different cause jade is apparently very popular. Green is my favorite color and I love both jade the stone and the jade plant, so it works for me. (bugs me to no end when someone starts referring to me as Jay in chat situations, it is not that hard to type 2 more letters!!! lol) the 877 came from the fact that even the odd spelling of Jayde was apparently popular and instead of using some odd number that made no sense or my age which obviously will change over time 8 is for my month of birth and 77 for the year. I have used a varioation of it some online names being 877 and others being 778 which confuses EVERYONE. But I do use one or the other for almost all of my user names.

I guess this is long enough for now.

Since this got pulled back up & looked fun I'd like to add! My birth name, Laura Lynn. Laura was really suppose to be Larry, as they thought I would be a boy, was to be named after by dad's best friend who had died right before my birth. My parents were both in high school during my birth. Since I was a girl they decided Laura was close, besides my mom loved the song 'Tell Laura I Love Her', although it is a very sad song. I noticed another 'Lori' that hated the spelling L-A-U-R-I-E which for me was exactly how family spelled my nickname growing up & I hated when someone used the L-O-R-I spelling! As I grew up though only family got away with the nickname, I was firm about being 'Laura' for some reason . Lynn I really don't know where it came from. As you can see my screen name is very creative, name is Laura, last name starts with an 'M', and yes was born in the year of 1962 ...so now you know my age as well

As for my kids I have:
*Danielle Marie - Danielle for Danielle Steele, love her books & my father is Daniel; Marie was my grandmother's middle name
*Janelle Sheree - Janelle my older daughter wanted a twin sister , so we found a name that was close to her name, kind of rhyme, but still different; Sheree is German and was a favorite name of my grandfathers
*Taylor Leanne - Taylor was my mothers' maiden name, Leanne is mother-in-laws' first name

If everyone cared and nobody cried; If everyone loved and nobody lied; If everyone shared and swallowed their pride; Then we'd see the day when nobody died --'If Everyone Cared' by Nickelback

Shelly Ann....First name, unknown origin. Something mom and dad dreamed up after a honeymoon, followed by a long Indiana winter. Mom will punch anyone out who suggests I was named after Shelley Winters. Mom says she may be an actress, but she's nothing more than a common sleazebag.
Ann is after my grandmother, Anna Maxine. Thank goodness I didn't get stuck with the Maxine part. Or named after my other grandmother...Dorothy Thelma (Who, when she was known by her nickname, Dot, was quite the life of the party. She was only called Dorothy at work...where she was quite the Florence Nightingale of Union Hospital)

My daughter is Christina Leigh (hubby jokes that it's from the Billy Joel song Christy Lee). He was insistent on Christine, but we couldn't think of a middle name. So, I asked an elderly friend, who happened to be named Christine, what her middle name was....Maude....My daughter just recently found this out and is very thankful she's not Christina Maude.

I have a friend whose name is Koi. Her twin sister is named Khaki. I think their parents were spending a little time with MaryJane back in those days.....
