Katrina already hit Florida once. My daughter lives outside of Homestead and said it was a mess. They didn't have power until noon on Friday. Phones where still down but her cell phone worked enough to call me and let me know she was ok. Stay safe everybody.

We ALL cut our lawns last night...It's not comming here (see when we DON'T cut our lawns, thats when we get one and can't cut the grass thats a FOOT high by the time you get to it...)so by cutting our lawns, we've managed to make the hurricane go the OTHER way...( Sorry Susie....)

Most likely we'll get those wonderful back winds and some rain though...
we've already stocked up on 'stuff', we're ready...(hopefully)
We've had Canadian AF here for a few days ( I missed'em darn hurricane, they had to fly out early). I DID get to hear their jets as they flew over my house night before last.

Hold on Susie...sandbags, flashlights...you know the drill ! (me too :re: )

I got this e-mail today ( Sat 8/27 ) around 4:30 pm EST and wanted to share it with everyone:

We are leaving and going north of Monroe, La which is 300 and something miles from here. I have my sewing machines and Raymonds A Model packed up and ready to go on a trailer. We will leave about 3:00aM in the morning and I won't have a computer until I get back or get settled in a new place in case there is no home to come back to. I'll let you all know how we make out. I'm taking this computer but don't know if I'll have my same email address if cox goes down. Just watch out for MotherInLaw at whatever the server might be I can use, that way you'll know it's me. Hugs to all and stay safe all of you that are here or the ones leaving here stay safe. If you are staying please watch the water it will come up fast and you won't be able to get out. Love to all.

I would imagine that Susie has evacuated by now...She lives in Chalmette and it is somewhat low..(that's saying alot since New Orleans is below sea level!!)...
I live about 20 miles NWof N.O...and looks like we'll get hit; but since I have less chance of flooding, I'll just hope we don't get trees on the house or a tornado hit....My last hurricane hit (Betsy) was in 1965 when I was 18 yr old; the next one (Camille) missed us in 1969 and hit the Gulf Coast...really bad...Anyway, we'll appreciate all the good thoughts and prayers...Paula

At least I didn't have to cook for a few days. I'm thinking of everyone in it's path. I hope everyone stays safe. 5 were killed in Miami area. Let us know how everyone is when ya'll can. Prayers are with ya'll.

Our DS & Family made it thru Katrina's S. Fla hit safely. Hope all of you in its new path do the same. We are in S. GA now but were in South Fl for 25 years and can really feel for what you are going thru. We would have had a direct hit from Andrew but at the last minute it turned a few degrees and we were spared but the damage was still unreal! Our prayers are with you all that you will get through it safely.

We will pray that the hurricane "calms down" considerably before it comes ashore. It seems that even here in Tornado alley the weather has been harder to predict and we've had some pretty strange tornados hit that weren't supposed to be "there". We heard that when this one hit southern Florida it did some pretty unexpected damage. Our prayers are for the safety of you, your loved ones, friends, homes and jobs. We hope that you'll be home sleeping safe and sound in your own beds soon!

while I'm thrilled that katrina has missed my dad in St. Pete... my heart goes out to Suze, Chrys, Paula, and everybody else in the gulf coast states... please, please, take care, evacuate if at all possible... I just heard that they expect that all wooden buildings in N.O. will be destroyed and that most native trees will be snapped or uprooted... Also, they're apparently cautioning people about wildlife seeking the same dry ground that humans will be occupying, they're worried particularly about poisonous snakes... Suze said she'd try to check in with us of possible, hopefully we'll hear from her and she'll be okay...and the rest of you all in the danger area, please do keep us posted as to your safety and well being...

I know from talking with Susie that their home is south of New Orleans, with the Mississippi on one side and a Levy on the other. She's almost on a Island. Plus all the Levys sit BELOW Sea level. I hope that her home doesn't get completely wiped out.
I have been watching the local New Orleans TVsites to get updates. It's interesting to hear the local news from someplace else.

Yes, keep everyone in your prayers. I've been watching a live feed from New Orleans for over 24 hours - www.wdsu.com, and www.wwltv.com. It sounds like this is a killer storm, and we can only pray that Suze will have a home to go back to, and everyone will be safe.

They're even saying on our local news that we'll see some of Katrina here in Michigan. Sheesh what a monster.

Our relatives close to Baton Rouge called and said they made it through it okay.
We're bracing for high winds and rain here in the next few hours. I just hope there's no tornadoes.

I sure hope Susie and Chrys are okay.

You don't have to tell a gal raised in tornado alley how crazy news people are! All those crazy storm chasers out there when a tornado is on the ground. Anyone with a lick of sense would know that you can't be sure when they'll change directions or spawn another one.

Those guys standing a few weeks ago in Florida and now in LA and MS with signs and trees blowing down around them are nuts. I hope that I'm not watching one of these days when one of them is killed on camera.

They have started posting Flood Warnings for us starting on Tuesday into Wednesday. Now I have to go down into the basement and make sure everything is off the floor. Just hope that we don't lose power as we have to pump UP to the sewer lines in my neighborhood. I just know that the people in Marietta along the Ohio River are just sweating bullets right now. They get hit and hit hard with floods. :nc:

We're fine...just getting hit with backlash wind and rain (and not much rain).
Luckily the power stayed on. Biloxi and N.O. got the worst of it with the flooding. (they're all sea level and below....having lived in Biloxi, I can tell you most of the people who live around the water (and most do because thats where they build) will have water damage.) I'm sorry for them all...all the mess and distruction. I hope Susies Ok and has a home left....
At least it wasn't a bad as they predicted and most people got out of town to higher ground. ( I know from the LA plates we have here all of a sudden..
we're about 3 hrs away from Biloxi, 4 hrs from N.O.)
They won't be able to get back for a few days...the roads are impassable or gone.
I'll hold out good thoughts that everyone will be Ok and get back to a home.
Thank you all for YOUR good thoughts...we dodged the hurricane...but it seems like we've been preping for this EVERY two weeks...(I'm tired and hurricane season has 2 more mnths and they're THE WORST of the season  )

Been listening to CNN off and on all day. My brother lives between Biloixi and Gulfport but I know he left and when north, but no telling what he will go back to. I just heard it could be 3 or 4 weeks before any of the area that was hit could get power back. I feel sorry for them and hope that everyone is safe. That is 2 in my family hit in less than a week. My daughter lives just south of Miami. She is still without power and her mobile home park is still flooded but she is safe and with her dad.

It's so sad that so many people have lost everything but their lives. I hope that the damage and death is not as much as they fear. Many of the poorer people may be displaced by the storm because they won't be able to afford to rebuild. After our May 3 tornado, many people couldn't rebuild or lost their property and commercial interests came in and built on the land that was left because the property was valuable. Even some of the private business lost everything because they couldn't afford to be out of business long enough to rebuild. It took years for some of the housing to be replaced.

I hope that Susie can check in soon. Maybe she'll find a library where she is and let us know that everything is fine.

Chrys, I'm glad you're okay.
Waiting to hear from Susie.....

We're still getting alot of wind. It's not as bad as last night and early this morning. At 4:00 am, the trees were leaning almost on their sides when the gusts picked up. There's leaves and small tree limbs everywhere, but thank God that's the worst of it here. We still have power, but alot of people in this county don't. School was cancelled because of the winds.

I really feel for the people in Mississippi and Louisiana. The pictures on FOX are awful. We still can't get a satellite signal for our local channels.

Have been watching the rescue missions with the Coast Guard Choppers, it is just amazing to watch all of this as it is happening. There are some SUPER pilots on those things having to drop and raise people with all those power lines around.

It is really sad that people are looting(sp). Baby supplies I can understand, but the other NON emergency things!!!!

It just gets to me when you see the video from the Choppers of water that just doesn't seem to end. I keep hoping that one of those houses is not Susie.

I have heard at least three News Reporters just break down crying from some of the stories that they are covering. I wish I could just wave a Magic Wand and fix all of this.

We have been put on Flood Watches and Warnings here and have been advised to have things ready just in case we lose our power. It started raining in the early hours of the AM and has not let up. At times we get some pretty good down pours. And they say that this is just the leading edge of this thing. At least there is no wind.............yet.

just wondering if anybody has heard anything yet from Suze or from Paula (ninifav) ?? I do hope they will check in soon to let us know they are safe... its not looking good for the chances of poor suze's house having survived unscathed.. not sure about Paula's place... she's on the opposite side of town from Suze... If I could make a suggestion.... please, please consider making a donation to the Red Cross,or the Salvation Army, or any other charity that will be doing recovery work in the gulf coast states... they need all the help they can get... Also, Office Max offers a 5% rebate on your purchases to be donated to the school of your choice, you just need to know the school's code.. if you know someone in the gulf coast states, ask them for their local school's code and help them out if possible...many of those schools have suffered a great deal of damage and will need all the help they can get...

One of my husband's friends has just asked for prayers. Her elderly infirmed mother is trapped in rising waters, sitting on the kitchen sink. She has called for help and it is on the way. She doesn't have any idea where her son is and the rescue people won't be looking for him yet because he is supposed to be healthy. For every one we hear about there are probably dozens just like them. I hope that they can get out. Our state is sending copters to help and I'm sure that many others are too but I understand that it is difficult to maneuver through debris to get to the trapped. I hope that they can work safely. We don't need any more disasters.

I know from being in the flood of 1998 in San Antonio/New Braunfels the flooding was horrible but the cleanup took a long time.
Yes there were all kinds of critters out and about. Later the misquitos were NASTY too!
Luckily we lived on the 2nd floor of the apartments but the 1st floor had 5 feet of water rushing thru it. We lived right next to the Guadalupe river and it was rushing thru the town of New Braunfels.

Being as they don't bury the dead under ground they talked about caskets and such floating in the water; then there is all of the looting! People lose their belonging to flood and what is left people steal! I hope that there is some type of ramifications for people who are stealing!

I just pray for the all of the people involved!
Blessings & Smiles

I live in North Louisiana, and we have friends here from Destrehan and Kenner. They don't know anything about their homes. They thought they were ok until the latest report of more water rising tonight. It is so depressing. We have all cried all day. My friend, Vanessa, has one daughter still down there, a dr. who stayed to help, but probably couldn't get to the hospital. She lives at Covington. We haven't heard from her at all and we are very worried.
I talked to someone today who had family at Chalmette, and they said they heard that everything was under water.
There are no good reports. It is just devastation in the worst way. Wish we could do more.

Keep in mind that with all the flooding there are bound to be cell towers out and others jammed with signals. It may be some time before the ones that are jammed and dropping signals will calm down to the point that people can actually get through.

We are all so worried about Susie. All phone lines are down but she's around Madison she told me before she left out. She has my phone number & I keep hopeing she'll call collect but sure she's trying to get in touch with someone closer to home. We offered our home to them but they'd already made their plans. Susie is a much loved person by so many of us & I'm worried sick about her & the family. We always help all we can in helping the hurricane victims & if Susie needs help I'm sure all of us will be there for her & the family. I hope they are with family or friends & not stuck in some motel room. She also took her computer she said, so " if " she can locate a hook up or a library she'll contact the site or some of us. If anyone hears from her please post it. I keep checking into the site for news of her. I feel for everyone that Katrina made a mess of their lives. She was one mean gal.

All of this is just unbelievable.
One of my SIL in La. just told me that their house is okay, but they have a huge mess in their yard. My cousin in Mississippi drove to Montgomery before the hurricane hit, but found out today that his home full of water and lots of damage.
What will they do with all the homeless people??? It's heart wrenching. I can't imagine what the death count will be when it's all over. I wish there was more we could do to help.
My almost 17yo told me, "Mom, if I was 18, I would be there."

My husband just came in and said he's going to the gas station down the road to fill up. A friend just left there and said there's a long line. It's still $2.60-something a gallon. They told him when it's gone, they don't know when they'll get more. He also said the owner told him it's up to $6.00 a gallon in Atlanta. I don't know if that's true but it's a terrifying thought. DH drives 65 miles one way to work every day. :bluesad: I don't know how we would manage if it gets much higher.
My tank is 3/4 full, but I'm going to go top it off now, if I can get in line.

Under normal circumstances, the oil cartels would step in. It would be in their best interest to help keep the US on its feet. It will be interesting to see if they are willing to rise to the occasion. This would be a nobel gesture.

I did not hear about the other countries or NATO but I did hear that Disney and Exxon each donated somewhere in the neighborhood of $2mill to be released immediately. So maybe other oil companies wil be quick to follow Exxon and ditto with media companies and Disney.

There is no gas to buy in our area for now. When most of the stations sold out here this morning, it was around $3.00 a gallon. One place was $3.29.
I hope hubby finds some gas on his way home or he might have to miss work tomorrow.
Is it sold out in other areas of the U.S. yet?

Bama, At 5 pm today regular was $2.92 per gal & prem was over around $ 3.30. Some stations higher.A small town close to here was $3. something for reg. Long lines everywhere & some stations sold out. It reminds me of 1974 here when we waited in line for gas & at times when it came your turn there was none. The boats are out to use for sure for our grown kids. Had plans for the 3 day weekend but now say they'll all come here & swim in the pool. Fine with us but guess I'd better stock up on the food & junk stuff to munch on. There goes my sewing weekend. No problem. Family first sewing second.

As far as I can see we still have gas. I did notice today when I went to gas up, people bringing containers to fill up with gas. I had a half of tank almost and it ended up costing me 63.00. I only drive to work and try to make all my stops to and from to work. Since I have to work this holiday weekend, I know where I will be. If I didn't have to work I would be not driving anywhere.
When I stopped at the grocery store, I did notice people buying in bulk. The manager of the store said he was suppose to get a truck today and it never came. He is slightly upset that the store will start running low on many things. He said he has noticed a panic buying, and fears the customers will become angry when the shelves become less than full.

All of our local bases have sent troops, copters and planes to help..they're also bringing in Airmen, Navy, etc that lost homes, temp housing (TLF), newbies from Biloxi will either come here or go home, AF is flying them. All of Keesler's patients are comming here and to Jacksonville.

I can't believe they weren't prepared for a hurricane...after Camille in the 60's. THEY STILL had wreckage when we lived there in 92....what a mess and all those poor people....

What I really DON'T understand is WHY SHOOT at people who are trying to help you ??? Thats like the Iraqi's killing their people with bombs, for no reason that I can see....

One of my neighbors came over and said it was terrible about all the looting and stuff...and I said...WE were in the same boat last year with hurricane Ivan. NO food, no gas, no power, couldn't get out on the streets because of the debris...people near the water HAD NO HOMES, NO BUSINESS'S...no one down here looted...we didn't shoot at people..we didn't fight....Ivan's anniversary is comming up...I realize people in FL are used to hurricanes, but we ALL knew it was comming...we HAD A WEEK TO PREPARE. MS and LA SHOULD have had SOME kind of plans in place....especially since they KNOW they're at SEA LEVEL and they have a lot of poor, who can't leave town.
They also know the levee's leak and overflow all the time.....
I guess I don't understand why people get angry at Pres. Bush and the government for NOT doing anything, when the STATES are supposed to ACT FIRST to prepare their people. Have a plan in place...it's not rocket science.
Then they all complain, IT'S NOT SOON ENOUGH. The roads weren't passible, you can't FLY IN A HURRICANE. YOU CAN'T LAND choppers OR planes in the water and where you gonna land'em if the airports aren't working ???
I understand people are upset...I'm upset...I sat through it too...not as bad, but I've sat through MORE THAN one hurricane in 10 yrs...
It makes you angry, the heat makes you angry and upset, no food makes you ill, as does no water....no news (and we're all used to news 24/7) getting through. You can't drive, call anyone. You're STUCK. But getting insane and out of control is NOT the way to get help, get things done and HELP OTHERS. Everyone is in the same situation. I know it's hard to be calm in certain situations, but really...shouting, looting, shooting and making an ass of yourself doesn't do anything.

I'm so sorry about this whole thing. The people were told to evaculate. Some couldn't. I understand that. There were many who chose to stay. I can't say that I really understand that. I guess when you've moved so many times and nothing has happened, you think it won't. I don't know. What I do understand is that many of those people chose to stay behind, guard their property (looks like they may have needed to guard their property), and take their chances. I'm sure that many realize that they are at least partly to blame. I don't think anyone, anywhere really thought about how bad it could be or what they would do if the gamble didn't work or how fast things would go wrong.

There was a university study done about 3 years ago that covered a model of what would happen if this exact thing happened to New Orleans. The study has been almost 100 percent correct. The LA officials KNEW what could happen. However, the city was built a long time ago. I don't know if they expected anything to happen either. I guess their best idea was to take everyone to higher ground at the Super Dome. I don't think they made a plan for what would happen afterwards. I was scared to death that the dome wouldn't make it and was amazed that it did.

Chrys, you are right about the state officials being in charge. We are sending Okla Guard troops down. They are not allowed to carry guns or shoot back and they are totally at the disposal of the local officials. They are officially in a search and rescue mode.

What we are missing here is that most of the help that comes quite often comes through volunteer agencies. I think that a lot of the problem is that the agencies take a while to get into place where they can help. We are blaming the government, but the government can only do so much. We normally help each other. The size of this disaster is so massive and concentrated that I think that if anyone had been ready and organized to go that we could have gotten there any quicker.

What worries me is that there is so much attention concentrated on New Orleans, what about the other areas that have been hit? Are they getting assistance too?

Lyn, Dh paid $2.99 last night.

Thing about it is that Arizonia does not use gas from the gulf coast. ALL our gas comes via pipeline from CA. Last night one of the TV stations had the AZ Attorney General on and asked him why our prices were going up so fast. He said because they (the oil companies) could charge anything they wanted to charge. We have no laws on the books that prevent them from taking full advantage of any and all situations. So that has got to tell you part of why we are in this mess...............greed! I pity the poor family that was barely making it before the gas hikes because this might be the thing that will make them go under.

I agree Norma! It's terrible and I know I fill my daughter's tank fairly regularly because she doesn't have the money to fill it in that 2nd week before a paycheck. I saw $3.19 on the way into work this morning! And, funny the station that had "no gas" yesterday has it today for $3.09!

We live just south of Shreveport, LA and we have friends here with us from Destrehan and Kenner. We did find out that they did not have any flooding on their street in Destrehan, Ormond Blvd.
Their daughter was in Covington and was supposed to be on the recovery team for Charity Hospital, but she couldn't get out. We didn't hear from her until last night and was worried sick. She is ok, but Covington was hard hit by the winds, no flooding. She still can't get out, but they're hoping soon.
We have received a lot of refugees in our area and in Shreveport. My daughter works for 911 in Shreveport and they have added staff and been told to be very careful because many here were trying to steal drugs and guns. It is a bad situation getting worse in many areas. There are so many good people in need, and the bad ones make it hard on everybody.
Gas was scarce here yesterday, but many were getting shipments today, of course with higher prices.

We had kids from New Orleans enroll in our school yesterday and today. We may get more. I heard on the news that people as far as NY were offering free housing to people, if they could get there on their own.
Most of the news coverage is focused on New Orleans, but it's probably because of the huge amount of people still stranded there with little or no help.
I heard a reporter today that went into N.O. in a boat and people were sitting on their porches with water all around and begging them to take them to a shelter. She said there were dogs everywhere, sitting on porches trying to survive.
Anyone hear about the 18 year old who took it upon himself to take a school bus and carried a load of people to Texas? I wonder why someone else hadn't thought of that.

There's still very little gas around here and what is here, the prices are still rising. That's why it makes me SO ANGRY that the schools here haven't cancelled football games for this week. There's already talk about possibly going to a 4 day school week to save gas on the buses if things aren't better next week, and they want people to waste gas going to a football game. And my DD (cheerleader) would get demerits if she doesn't show up.

We were told this afternoon that the Attorneys General across the nation are joining together to investigate the refineries, oil companies and station owners. They have all figured out that, especially with this awul situation in the South, that the refineries and oil companies world wide are taking the opportunity to make a lot of money off other peoples misery. Also, if you haven't heard the news, crude oil prices dropped today and so did wholesale gasoline prices. However, I have a feeling all of the station owners nationwide are going to wide this wave as long as the American public will allow it. Myself, I'm going to start going in and questioning the owners/managers of these stations that are continually jacking the prices and letting them know they are going to be reported to the Attorney General's office here in Oklahoma. It's time that we, as Americans, stand up and shout that we are done with these kinds of things being forced on us. There are actually people here who are having to make the decision of feed their family or spend the money on gasoline.

I talked to a station owner who is a personal friend. He isn't making money on this...at all. He told me what he was paying per gallon and what he was making and it was less than 3 cents a gallon. His prices are a little lower than some in the area but just a couple of cents. I receive a very very small royalty check each month and only one month was it any higher than what it has been the last 3 years. I think the money is being made in the board rooms OR the refineries. Someone somewhere is rolling and when they post the profits for the last quarter it is going to get ugly.

However, the station owner I talked to says that he thinks the it has to do with the refineries aging...I know for a fact that many of the companies that made parts and did a lot of work on the rigs and refineries went under with the bust in 86 and 87 when Oklahoma almost went out of business. Those people had to find jobs elsewhere. Many of the oil field equipment hasn't been improved since then. In addition, old wells are shutting down and in a lot of the new areas where we know there is oil drilling is not allowed because of enviromental concerns. Those are all facts. The owner I talked to says that he thinks the problem is legit.

I personally think it is very interesting that oil starts getting scarce around Easter and continues to get worse until just after Labor Day. It is my opinion that the oil companies know that they can create a shortage if they want to do so and they have the American people over a "barrel". Oklahoma has a law that says that if the well isn't pumping for so long that the pipe has to be pulled and the well sealed. Once a well is sealed it is cheaper to drill new than start over. So...they can take the rigs down just long enough to keep from sealing the well...and then open them back up. By rotating the wells, they can control how much they pump. That is what I think is happening!

WHAT"S MORE, JUST THREE YEARS AGO THEY TOLD THAT THEY INTENDED TO TAKE GASOLINE UP TO THREE DOLLARS A GALLON!!!!!

There needs to be a congressional investigation about the whole thing.

There is not a shortage of crude oil anywhere in the world. In fact, Saudi and those countries have offered to up their production and shipping of crude to the United States especially because of this problem and the oil companies have said no thanks. The problem is in the refineries. First of all, there has not been a new refinery built in this country for over 30 years. And, I for one, do not believe that the gas station owners are not making money. That is just a big bunch of baloney. They wouldn't be in business if they aren't making money and that is just plain and simple. The refineries are constantly finding reasons to shut down different parts of their operations as it benefits them to be able to raise the prices. I'm sorry, but I'm seeing people who are becoming unable to get to work, etc. because of the prices of gasoline and the prices are going out of control in the grocery stores so that people are beginning to have trouble feeding their families and all because of the gasoline prices sky rocketing out of control. I am really, really hoping that Drew Edmondson and the other AGs across the country go after the oil companies, the refineries and the station owners over this.

Well, if this keeps up, Congress needs to slap regulatory laws back on the oil and gas industry. They take them off saying that it will inspire exploration and the industry enjoys EXPLOITATION! In the meantime the oil companies are eating each other up until there are only a few left...that gives the few that are left more room to charge big prices. You can bet that if there is a shortage it is from the industry itself. Even the other oil producing countries are beginning to ask what is going on!

The bottom line is that the oil and gas industry is going to take the economy to the cleaners if they aren't stopped!
