Hi,

I'm hoping one of you will know of a product I'm looking for. I saw it at a Needlework show some years ago and I'll try and describe it as best I can and hope for the best!

It was a plastic that you ironed to the right side of your project; for display, they were doing placemats. You iron this clear plastic to the placemat and it became waterproof. I think they also used it on some little girl appliques on a bag. It would be good for anything where you need only a small amount of waterproofing. It wasn't heavy enough for major things.

Does anyone know what this iron-on plastic is called, where I could get some of if it's even still around. I'm trying to find something to cover some fabric in order to make a purse that will stand up to some wear. This would match an outfit I just made my DD.

Thanks for your help.

Are you talking about iron on vinyl? If so they sell it at JoAnn's and probably Hancocks.

It does sound like the iron on vinyl. I bought some from JoAnnes and used it to put on a lining for a diaper bag.

Thank you, Sews4Kate and SummersEchos .... you were both right. Because you gave it it's correct name, I was able to do a search and found the brand etc and info I needed. I haven't located it yet even though the website says both Michael's Crafts and Wal-Mart should carry it.

I'm in Canada and apparently not everything on the website is available at the local Michael's ..... or the person I spoke to just didn't know what I was talking about. I'll have a look next time I'm near there.

I haven't had a chance yet to call Wal-Mart but nothing came up from their website.

I really appreciate your help though. Thanks again.

In Michaels, its with the t-shirts and sweat shirts.. They show pockets of it on the shirts with treasures inside them.. This is as a decoration on the shirt fronts, not as "pockets".. as such.. :bg: :bg:

Thanks, LeapFrogLibby. I'm going to get to Michael's this week sometime because I'm not quite ready to believe that they don't carry it and order it from their website. Sames goes for Wal-Mart actually; I talked to them earlier today with the same result - they don't carry it. Personally, I think the person I talked to just didn't know what it was.

Thanks for your help.

You know, I had difficulty finding it at JoAnnes too. The first saleslady had no idea what I was talking about and showed me the huge rolls of vinyl. Then I asked another salesperson and she knew what I was talking about. It was in one of the aisles with the sewing notions near the irons, and it was with the "heat and bond" stuff. So when you go to Walmart, I'd look by where they sell the Heat and Bond.

Thanks, Sews4Kate,

I'm going to take a very good look around when I get to Wal-Mart. I think the aisle where they have all their notions would be a good place to start.

Many JOAnn's keep it with the interfacing, under the cutting counter, or with the utility fabrics. Yes many JoAnn employees have no idea what you are asking for either. They do sell it in bolts like the interfacing where you can buy as much as you want. I do believe it is as wide as interfacing.

Valerie,
I just used a universal needle that was appropriate for my fabric, the vinyl is really thin. I think it is a fantastic idea to use it on bibs! (I wish I'd thought of it! I just made some bibs!) If I were to use it on bibs I'd probably put it on the back so that the front is still absorbant, my dd was a big spitter upper so I needed bibs to be absorbant when she was still an infant. Now that she older I use the bibs with the pocket or crumb catcher at the bottom, then I maybe would put the vinyl on the front to protect any designs on it.

Hi, I check out the iron vinyl. You can not wash it in hot water. I was going to use it for bibs. Any other suggestions for bibs? Valerie

I make bibs out of cotton backed with flannel or fingertip towels with a rib binding for the neck. If you really want to be able to wipe them down like with a vinyl on the front, how about using a vinyl tablecloth? You could back it with nicer flannel or cotton than comes on them and you can usually find them fairly inexpensively.

You can buy different weights of clear vinyl also...

Have you thought about trying fabricland?? I know they carry it.. I see you are from Calgary so I'm presuming you do have a fabricland there :re:

Hi,

Yes, you're right. We do have Fabricland in Calgary. They don't actually carry the iron-on vinyl. They were the first place I checked because I had thought they did as well. Nor does Michael's Crafts.

They have several weights of regular clear vinyl that you would use on your table but it can't be ironed onto fabric.

Thank you, everyone for your help. SummerEchoes has been very kind in asissting me and sending me some from the U.S.

When you sew on vinyl or the tablecloth stuff use a teflon foot or a roller foot. The regular feet will stick to the vinyl.
