I just bought one of these in a cabinet for $40! I really just purchased it for the cabinet, I have an old Singer that is cabinetless. I got it home and it has all the attachments and a bunch of other stuff in the drawers(more than what I have for the Singer). I need an honest opinion as to if I should leave this machine in the cabinet and sell the Singer or switch them. I have never heard of Domestic and am wondering if it is a quality machine. Any opinions on Domestic machines in general would be great. Gina

I don't know exactly how old my mom's machine is but I am guessing it has to be around 45 years old and still sews as good as the day she got it. It has handled alot of tough fabrics in its days and still sews a mean seam on cottons for quilting. I would say give the machine a try and see what you think.

How cool!!!! My very first sewing machine came in a cabinet just like that, in fact the machine looked like that, but it was a White. Sounded like a train but ran beautifully!!! I cannot tell you how much I miss it, especially the knee control.
Don't be so open minded your brains fall out.

Libby that is the exact one that I bought. I am giving it to my 7 yr old son for Christmas. I really enjoyed having a machine to take with me when I moved out of my parents and decided that each of my kids will have their own machine to take with them. My oldest already has the cabinet that I moved out with. Unfortunately the machine died so we put a different machine in it. I also miss the knee control and the flat surface to sew on. I wonder if they will ever get smart and put new machines in beautiful cabinets with knee control. I know you can purchase those cabinets with the elevators in them but they are just not the same. My Kenmore from the 70's has a floor pedal just like my Janome.. (both are made by Janome)... Note to Natred-- I read on one of those history sites abt the Domestic that the company was later merged or bought out by White, so your machine could very well have been very similar to the pictured one.. I had a White once, (my first machine) and it had the knee control.. I loved it, all except that you turned the wheel the wrong way to start stitching...(away, instead of toward you) . I was just out of school, and did not sew much, anyway.. My Aunt bought it from me.. and I did not buy another for several years, and when I did, it was Old Faithful.. (Singer 221 aka Featherweight portable) I would also like to have a knee control on my machine today..

"I need an honest opinion as to if I should leave this machine in the cabinet and sell the Singer or switch them." You won't switch this one with the Singer. Your Domestic is actually a White, probably from the mid 50s. Domestic was just another name that they used so that they could have more than one dealer in the same area. Unfortunately, the opening and hinge placement are very different from Singer's. At that time, the Kenmores were also produced by White, and when White folded (Sears pushed them under) the Kenmores were then ordered from Asia with the same base as the old Whites. As a result, there are some flat bed Kenmores from about 1958-1970 that could possibly be interchanged with yours. Bill Holman |

Well I finally got a chance to sit down with this machine and I must say WOW! I greased and oiled it following the directions in the manual (they just don't make manuals like they used to). Threading it was not rocket science although I did have a bit of trouble with the needle because you thread it from the side. This machine sews like a dream! Perfect stitch length. Tension was beautiful. It does sound like a train but oh well. I love the knee lever and the flat work surface. I am having a hard time waiting for Christmas to get here. I want to get my son sewing on it right away! Gina
