Susie, What a devastating storm! I'm so sorry for your loss. But remember that life will get better. We suffered through a horrific flood here in our town in 1997. The whole town was evacuated; everyone had flood damage. We have come back; in some ways, even stronger.

Blessings to you and your family.

MIL - sure glad to hear from ya ... DH suffered 1997 flood in East Grand Forks, MN (like the other gal who posted earlier about Grand Forks, ND) - they came back. As someone said, the most important is that you all are safe!!! People cannot be replaced but others can.

Please please please let us know what we can do - we are so willing to help!

Thank you for taking the time to post us and letting us know how you are ... we really appreicate it! Keep posting when you can or talk to someone and that person will post any news/updates/requests for you or others ... this also goes to other people including SWN posters :)

Susie, I'm so glad you and your family are safe. And so very sorry that you've lost everything. What a horrible, horrible thing to happen to anyone. I hope you were able to grab some of the most important items to you when you left but remember "things" can be replaced for the most part. Family cannot. I'm so very happy that you are all safe. Please let us know if we can do anything to help.

Susie - we will all be praying for you and all the others devastated by this. I know that this is a very trying and exhausting time, remember to replinish your body and your soul everyday. I am just so thankful that you listened to the warnings and were able to get out with your family in time. We are still waiting on word from DH's aunt who would not leave her home in Biloxi because her husband was ill and she thought traveling would be too stressful. That kind of reasoning has frustrated us to no end, but all we can do is pray. The rest of our family is ok - just possessions lost and those are replacable. Susie take care of yourself - don't overdo - this too will pass and you will be back to sewing soon. You will stay in our prayers.
God Bless

Susie,

So glad to know you and your family are safe. I have been through a flood and a tornado and know that the next few months will be very hard on everyone. Just know that your friends are here. You will need to vent, we all have big ears and shoulders. Everyone is praying for you and your family and for all those that lost their homes.

This is a link to a local news station in New Orleans giving film clips of the area and announcements about road conditions, information about particular parishes, closing, etc. There is also a place to post so people can contact each other. There are bound to be families that have been seperated.

Susie, ditto big time on what everyone else has said & offered. If there is anything & I MEAN ANYTHING , Jim & I can do for you & your family, we are here for you. I'm still so worried & concerned but at least we know ya'll are safe. Jim has plenty of vacation time so maybe he can help ya'll rebuild or what ever. He knows all about building. I'm so glad you took your machine, computer & Raymonds show car. Since I now know ya'll are ok I'll still worry but maybe I can sleep better now. We are all here for you Gal & prayers are pouring in. Let us know what you need, now or even later as things come up. We're all family here & you & yours are loved very much. Please keep in touch on the site plus if you got my last e-mail you know my phone #. If not remember Naples, Fl. & both our names are in the book. Just call information & call collect. We all will get you back on your feet as soon as we can. I know you'd do the same for any of us. As I said we're family here & I feel so close to you. Keep that chin up & a stiff upper lip. Take care.

She got threw to us on the sewing site she belong's to... she let us know she was safe in Bastroup La...If you have heard from her or hear from her would you please let me know ...where in Bastroup she is ...or do you know who she is staying with.

Susie I have let your friends know I have heard from you to ...I sent them your post's ...I pray this is helping.

Here are some I got back ...I am hoping to get these to Susie... I have to post them here Mary as I don't know where to go with them...

Letter from Kathi

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Susie and I are best friends. My
name is Kathi Traina. If she posts to the group please tell her that I
and my husband are in Dallas Texas. Please tell her that my oldest son
is possibly dead. She will want to know. Tell her that we will get in
touch with her as soon as.

Letter from Susan

Hi this is Susie's friend Susan from Diamondhead, Mississippi. Susie is safe where she is, but she will not have a home to come back to. She lives in St. Bernard Parish, and that is the parish that took the direct breech of the levey and is totally under water. My heart just breaks for her. I am about 35 miles east of her where there was a direct hit of the eye. Don't think I have a home to go back to either. Since none of our cell phones work from that area, we can not get in touch with anyone. Please pray for my family that did not leave the area.
Oh, we are safely tucked away in Chatanooga, TN.

Hey Susie's friend,

I am also a friend of Susie's and my sister too, If you find her please
let her know that our family's are safe, except for one. Kathi's oldest
son stayed behind and we don't know if he made it. So tell her Kathi's
in Texas with her boys, she'll understand. and my parents are with me
in little rock ark.

Will Try to write laterr,we are on our way to Viriginia... glad to hear
Susie if safe.... If you hear from her let her Know Debi and family
are safe but still on the road.

THANKS DEBI
>

please thank you,
Jan Myra

Our church and our choir is pitching in with the relief effort. In the meantime, anything I can send your way for you and your family just name it and I'll do my best to see that it's on it's way to you; chocolates, fat quarters, fabric, thread, needles, notions, just name it. God Bless all of you. I love each and everyone of you. I'm in tears right now not because of the things I lost but because of all the wonderful people in this world that are helping us find one another and helping us get in touch with each other.

Bren, You are a little doll for doing that for me with everyone on my email list. Kathi was the one I was worried about the most. She and her sister is one of best friends at home. God has been there for us and everyone here in Bastrop, LA had been wonderful. We are now residents of Bastrop, LA My new address will be instant messaged to Mary and she can let you know where I'm at. I will be here for a while I'm sure. I can replace my things but not people and I have all my family here with me. Also, I saved my sewing machines, my computer CPU, my pictures and I even saved my Siggy quilt!!!!!! I have so much things that were brought to us I really don't need a thing except your love and I have already gotten that. I will call Kathi today if I can get a line out. Love you all I am using my new landlords computer so I have to go. Hugs to all of you. WE WILL SURVIVE!!!!!!!!! and we did.

I belong to a yahoo group that apparently Kathi Traina does too. Marie, the owner of the group, posted this email from Kathi, apparently her emails are not all going through -

Dear Monica, Thank you so much for caring and for thinking about us. I am not sure if I sent you an email thanking you as so many emails are not going thru. After this coming Sunday I may not have email or internet access for a few months. I will try to keep everyone informed as to what is going on. I just tried to email Marie and tell her that we have heard that our son is safe but not yet evacuated from the flood area. I am proud that he was part of a rescue team and participated in the rescue of over 200 people. He was able to get our boat unhitched and from under a downed aluminum patio cover. We are so very relieved. I hope this email goes thru. And I hope one day to be able to repay everyone's kindnesses.Hugs, Kathi

Susie, I hope you see this! I am praying for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Susie, I think I can speak for all of us here. You are one Mother In Law that we want to keep and all love very dearly!!!!!!
When I see your face on the screen, I breath a sigh of relief knowing that you have been able to check in with us. Just hang in there, we will help get your life back together one stitch at a time. I was going to say that I was ready to come down and go swimming, but I think your pool kinda got a little dirty. :bg:
Did anyone happen to see the News coverage of the man and his family that where trapped in their house, but managed to get their above ground pool cleaned out? It was funny seeing all the dirty water completely surrounding the pool, but the pool water was very clean!!! Think that he must have dumped every pool cleaner he had at the house into it. They had the ladder turned sideways off the deck and used it get into the pool
I think once we hear from Paula again, we will all breath a little better.
Did anyone else hear the story about the shark swimming in the streets? Don't know if I believe that one or not. :nc:
Keep us posted as to where we can get things to you. Are you able to get into your IM's at all? What about your e-mails?

Allioops, Isn't that funny about you being in a group that my very dear friend belongs to. I called her on the phone day before yesterday and she is in Dallas with one of her sons and they bought a camper trailer and are moving closer to what use to be home. I will keep you informed when I hear from her. Hugs to all of you I am tired and have to close but I have a computer set up here at the house now so I can stay in touch. Love to all of you.

Susie, it is such a small world. I met a gal who lives down the street from me, met her in an international embroidery group online, then met in person. We're best of friends now. The sewing, embroidering, and quilting communities are so closely related, and so friendly and warm, I just thank God for giving me the desire to make that first quilt and meet so many awesome people.

God bless you and keep you, hon, I am praying for you and yours.
Hugs,

Susie,
so good to see you are okay.
Thursday we are making quilts to ship down to Houston. It is going on priority post and we hope it will get there fast.
Watched everything on the news and still feel horrified at what happened. I hope all the people who were hit can pick up and rebuild their lives. My prayers go up that you all can.

Susie, you take care of yourself!!!! It is well documented that people who have been under extreme stress often get sick. I think this would certainly qualify. If you get to feeling worse, be sure and get to a doctor! Not only are you more likely to become ill because of the stress, but there is not telling what you might have been exposed to in all of this! I'm glad you decided to leave early enough to keep a few things!

I think it's the climate change I'm not use to it being cool at night and hot in the day. It's usually hot day and night down there. All the little ones have had runny noses and I guess it's all of us being cramped together.

The first couple of days I was here I lost about 7 pounds now I'm starting to eat again and the church is cooking meals for us so I gained 4 pounds back. Oh well.

I didn't get to the sewing place today but if I feel better I will go tomorrow.

My baby Paige started walking while we were here and Trinatte started crawling. They are getting so cute and I'm enjoying them all here everyday. The bigger kids are now in school and love the schools. They are use to 700 kids in their school and these only have 400 in the Magnet school my granddaugter is attending and the elementary school here only has 83 kids. They love it, they can now catch the bus which they couldn't do before.

My name is Cookie and I'm a relatively new member to SWN. I have finally gotten up enough courage to say Hello and to tell you that I'm just so happy that you and all of your family members are safe, dry, and beginning to rebuild your lives. I can't even begin to imagine what you are all experiencing, so I won't pretend to. What a wonderful blessing for your husband to be one of the few who still has a job to go to, there are schools for your grandkids to attend; you have Internet access, a computer and your machines! ( :bg: I'm an Internet junkie & I'd go bonkers if I couldn't get online to check mail and stuff!).

A lot of the other members here have offered to share their stash with you, and I'd like to join in with them. I'm only a beginning sewer, so my stash might not be as large, but I'd be happy and proud to send you some nice holiday fabric if you'd like it. I'm also a Grandma (first timer) and have some cute flannel stashed away for the little ones I'd be happy to share. I would be honored to make a couple of crib blankets for the babies-you just say the word and it's done! I'm not nearly as good at sewing as you are, but I would love to do that for you and your family. I"m going to try to be online tonight to see if I can get in the chat room and speak with you personally. If I can't make it, send me a PM or email me with the low-down on what I can do to help.

Please know that the thoughts and prayers of all Western New Yorkers are with everyone who has been devastated by this, and I'm one of them. You take care please--hope to chat with you soon!

Cookie

I'm still here hanging in there. Nerves are starting to get frayed but I'm big enough to stand in the middle and let them take their shots at each other. ROFL not really but it is getting cramped here but we are doing well. Just a little arguing going on but all in all it's fine.

I have to get shots today so I can get in there and retrieve the things I can save probably on Monday or Tuesday. Hepitius A and B and Tetnitis shots.

We made the morning news this morning they are filming from Chalmette and it's a mess. The reporter is coughing and saying it's hard to breathe with all the stinch he's smelling.

We are getting an 18 wheeler my nephew is getting for us, that's what he does for a living drives a big rig, and he's going in there with us to get our things. At least the things that are worth taking. I'm not sure what there is there left to take. My son was able to go in and get his big shrimp boat out of there and now he's trying to clean it and clean the motor so he can save it but the fishing industry is probably going to be lost for a while until all that oil is washed out of the fishing waters. Probably years before that happens.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

We may all be wrong about how long it will take the waters to clear. There were people who thought that it would be decades before St. Helens would start growing things. It was a very short amount of time before things started to return and grow. Our hope for all of you is that nature will start to rebuild as the people do and that things will come back bigger and better.

Returning will be so difficult for you. I hope that you find some wonderful surprises and blessings as you go back through your home.

You ladies are great.

We are still in Bastrop, but Hubby went yesterday and bought a peice of property on the same street we were wanting to buy before Katrina hit. So that's encouraging news to me. I wasn't able to sleep last night so I searched the internet and found a trailer I liked and could live with so we found a place that has that trailer in stock. I maybe sleeping in my own bed within the month hopefully. Septic system and well has to be done but I'm hopeful.

I'm having problems sleeping. I guess it's this blow up mattress and not being home in my own bed. It's going on a month now we are displaced and while I'm okay, I'm getting aggrivated about how slow things are going with the process we are getting in the help department. Fema is dragging their feet and the insurance company can't get in to access my Mothers house she had insurance we had none. So we sit and wait. We are being told that if we buy a trailer fema won't help us with a loan to refinance so if you don't wait on them you lose the fema help. I don't want a hand out just a low interest loan so I can get settled. :re: :bluesad: I'm also applying for an SBA loan which is hopefully what I guess is going to be my best bet.

The people here in Bastrop have been wonderful to all of us. God bless all of them and all of you that have been so kind to us. My oldest son is now in Baton Rouge living with his kids, my middle son is in Baton Rouge in a shelter with his wife and her family, they are trying to buy a camper trailer, and my baby son is trying to get a trailer so he can put it on our property.

I've sewn just a little. I made a few gifts for the ladies at the local hair salon. They were across the street from the motel we were in orginally and they brought us food, diapers, milk, money and lots of other things when we were at the motel. They cut my hair for free and did the girls hair, streaked and permed for a really good price. They wanted to do them free also but I wouldn\'t let them do that they were so good to us as it was I couldn't let them spend all day doing that for us and not give them anything. I went to the dollar store and got some velvet makeup bags and put their names on them. It's hard putting the machine up and down each time I use them I know I know I'm spoiled. I feel for all of you that don't have a sewing nook to call your own.

Well I'm going to close for now. Love ya all. susie

I've heard that FEMA can be a little difficult to work with...because it is government, it moves slow and sometimes they seem to overcommit and then not necessarily come through quite like you expected. At any rate, the closer you are to the first of the line, the happier you'll be. Hopefully the red tape will fall away and you'll have everything settled very soon.

Congratulations on the new home! I hope you'll be very happy there. In the meantime we are holding our breath on Rita!

I've watched FEMA working with local governments and it was snail's pace. One would hope they could get moving dealing with all the displaced people. But bureaucracy is slow and difficult. Just be sure you fill out all the forms carefully. I've seen professional grant writers pulling their hair out when dealing with FEMA -- and that was before it was Homeland Security!
Good Luck, Susie.

Susie, so glad you and your family on your way back to "normalcy"! I can only imagine how hard it is to be somewhere that isn't yours-you don't really want to settle in but it's hard living out of a suitcase so to speak. I be the gals at the hair salon were very happy with their gifts, I too, chuckled when I read your post!. Hang in there, things have a way of working out. Keep us posted.

oooough I'm with Heath Allen, our local news man. He's been on msnbc tonihgt and last night showing pics of St Bernard Parish where I'm from. He's from there also and he took pics of the water in there and it was horrible. Heath is kick....... he said if the storm is going to go anywhere let it finish the job it did in St Bernard...... it's ruined anyway leave the poor people who haven't lost anything alone. Heath coached my Granddaughter's baseball team, I was glad to see he was on there showing the parish and how the water was in there. They were tying up boats to the government complex which was underwater about 8 feet.

It's just sad no matter where it hits. I hate to wish that on anyone, but confining the damage to one area would certainly be a lot easier. I just wish that we could pray it away. I guess we should be grateful that we know that it is coming and there is a way for some to get out of town. There have been times in the past where it just "hit" and took lives with it as it went. Even here they are getting ready for up to 3 days of long lingering heavy rain...that'll put flooding in our 100 year flood plains where a lot of people have built million dollar houses. No one knows if it will turn this direction or not.

We are very lucky in todays world of High Tech that we know it's coming and people are able to get out. I wonder what our Grandparents and Great-Grandparents would think of all the weather things we have today. Technology that I'm sure they never even could have envisioned 75 - 100 years ago.
Some ways we are very smart, but in others we are still very stupid. Makes ya wonder how things did get developed!!!! :monkey:

We had our parents and grand parents to develop them! It's amazing how much smarter those people got as we got older!

The other day my Bernina dealer was talking about how much our grandparents would have enjoyed the new machines and how hard they worked to make a dress. I told him and I believe that those people practiced an art....not "fast food". We'll never understand the pride they had in their "work".

What I am trying to say is, look at those "Thousands of people that died in the last Hurricane that hit Galveston, if they would have had all the information THEN that we have now, they my not have died!!!! It is amazing just how much things have advanced in the last 25 years let alone the last 100. You are right that it was our Great Grandparents and Grandparents that "started" the developments, but with time and knowledge see what we have done to take their development even farther.
And yes, I agree with you on your second statement of "practicing an Art". In that regards, WE of todays age, have lost out.

Susie, I'm glad that you will have your own place soon! As I've said before, I'm not sure I would have handled all this as well as you have.

One major news story here in Dallas this morning has been hearbreaking. A bus carrying elderly evacuees from a nursing home exploded and caught fire. Twenty four of the 45 people on board died. A few were taken to a local hospital and all but one were doing well; that one person was in critical condition. These poor people were stuck in that traffic, trying to get to safety and then this happened. So sad!
