just wanted to bring this back up so it doesn't get lost,.. I'm a little worried about Paula. (ninifav).. she had signed up for a swap I'm running on another board (Threadstop) but we haven't heard anything from her... even when I sent out the swap info e-mails... I know she lived in Destrehan, which is on the Northwest side of New Orleans... if anybody knows anything about Destrehan, could you let us know.... What a total disaster that entire area is... it just breaks my heart...

Hi you all, I am FINE, thank you Lord...and thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers...I have been just sick for Suzie...Before I lost power, I saw that she evacuated and brought her sewing machines and I chuckled..(evacuation is just something that you do so often...) but at least she saved those....
This may be a little long; so please be patient...

Our parish fared very well...I actually had power out for only 16 hours...two days after the storm, a large truck took a shortcut on our street and ripped out the phone and tv cables...am just up today....I have about nine family households that are directly impacted by this storm; but only one had a foot of water...Unfortunately, the time that it took to get in to asess the damage allowed the mold to devastate the inside...

Since we are so close to the affected areas, we have first hand information that is not seen on the national news...I am told to take the tv pictures, multiply it by three and you get closer to reality...The complete and total lack of communication over 90,000 square miles took everyone by surprise... FEMA has so F-uped the first week, that lives were lost needlessly....Rescues are still being done and the finger pointing is incredible...It makes me furious that some politicians are trying to turn this into a racist issue...Trust me, it is so not; but because N.O. is higher percentage black and some are very poor, those selfess SOB's are using this for political fodder....Maybe if we shoot the professional politicians, then we will have a chance to rebuild...Anyway, off the soap box...sorry...The reality of it all is that this storm was so huge, that no one could have been really prepared....the local officials are all heroes...Baton Rougeans have opened up their homes, all of the churches have provided food and shelter....those people are awesome....

Things are improving (this does not mean that things are good..) Quite frankly, if it were not for the private citizens and the private sector from all over the country, and police and fire departments and electric and phone companies from other states, the disaster that you are seeing unfold would be so much worse...400 NYPD members are patrolling my parents neighborhood keeping it safe from the ineviable bad element...

As the waters finally recede, the body count is going to rise dramatically....some from the very poor sections of New Orleans , from Suzie's part of the city and lower....My understanding is that the waters are, while not technically toxic to the touch, very awful and incredibly smelly...This is going to get worse...

It is going to be a couple of months before the Metaire and Kenner areas are okay to return home...New Orleans...who knows??? Suzie's area??? when the waters recede, hopefully the sludge will not be toxic....

I am normally such a Pollyanna; the reality and the enormity of it all is just taking effect on us all....We are seeing some patients (we are a dental office) who have lost everything and are just so grateful that we see them and send them on their way....Church on Sunday was like Christmas...Standing room only in thanksgiving for having been spared by a measley 30 miles...

Suzie, if you have moved closer to Baton Rouge and can pm me, please do so..My heart breaks for you...But you are like so many that I have met...The human spirit soars over tragedy...and the American generosity all over is so wonderful...

Thank you all for letting me vent...this can be very frustrating watching the red tape, etc; but it does no good to get angry...just need to take a deep breath and take the next step...

Keep praying for those affected that they will be able to recover both financially and emotionally...God Bless....Paula

Thanks for checking in Paula, I know Mamadus will be relieved. Over here in England we have heard the racist rumours but nobody has paid any heed to them aware that it is the scope of the thing that is something that you just can't prepare for. Deal with better when it happens maybe, but prepare?
If there is one thing I have learnt about the American spirit it is that it is indomitable! When faced with crisis the People are amazing. bless you.

Paula, it is wonderful to know you are safe. Thank you so much for your update. I kind of had an idea the racist thing was wrong. I know everyone respects Jesse Jackson but I think he is wrong to say that racism is a culprit.

As one reporter said, the activists make their $$$ from racism so of course it is going to be brought to the forefront.

Those people need help and lots of it. That is what should be the main focus.

It may not be racism but you can bet if it had been, as one mainstream reporter -NBC - said, "If it had been Nantucket, or Los Angeles or Chicago FEMA would have been there the next day."
The color that have brought them in faster would be green.

Paula, glad to see that you are okay and back with us!!!!!!! Do you need anything? Heaven knows that you may not have been directly hit, but it sounds like you are keeping very busy helping out.

I think that the Politicians of this Country are getting a very loud and clear message from the people in this country, with the help of the News Media. It seems that the Media is finally on the side of the little guy. Like the Media reported, had this been 2004 (a election year) you know darn well the tanks would have been rolling in 24 hours BEFORE the storm hit.

I thought we didn't do politics on this board. Especially with such offensive language! There are other web sites for that crap.

You all are too funny...making me smile...Please be very careful about what you see on mainstream TV...
The info concerning the governer (and I didn't vote for her) and the mayor of N.O. are inaccurate....They were both truly heroes...She was begging for help from day one...My understanding from local TV was that Fema would not let the Red Cross in....who knows??? Scanning all of the channels, it seems that Fox (I know, yuck, conservative!!) is doing a more accurate accounting of events...another, maybe MSNBC??? isn't doing too much liberal finger pointing...

Surely makes me question what I see that is occurring in other places of the world....

Thanks for the offer of help but I am fine...my husband keeps buying food that I will end up giving to St.Vincent dePaul when this is all over....It's folks like Suzie that need us...thanks for the chatter....You all lift my spirits...Paula

Hey, hey. Where are my moderators??? :nc:

This issue is going to turn naturally to politics so please everyone, hold your tongue. Like I said, the evacuees are the ones to focus on. Not the politicians or the celebrities.

So glad you are okay!
My husband's brother and family live in Plaquemine. My SIL has been telling me about all the evacuees that are there now.

I was watching Fox News a little while ago and the Canadian Ambassador was on telling Wolf Blitzer all the aid that our Canadian neighbors have sent down to help the states involved in this disaster. So, I want to say thank you to our Canadian friends for your compassion and help.
