I have some things for her, I left her private mail, but if she doesn't get it, lets start a thread..

I have a washer, dryer, 27" color t.v., a wall unit (needs paint, but it's solid oak) and 'maybe' if it's still working a window unit a/c.
Anyone else ???

I'm sure we can find a way to get things to her...I'm not that far away. (she was 4 hrs from me in N.O.....)

I have items I can donate-depending on what they need-I know they need everything but I'm hoping Susie can let us know what her most immediate needs are so we can help. I'll keep watching the post.

WOW great minds think alike! LOL I don't have a lot of big stuff, but I have a dollar store nearby and can get some "home staple stuff" to send.

I agree, let's wait to hear from Susie. She will need basics for sure.

Mary, you are right. We need to wait to hear from Susie to see what she needs. It sounds like her husband has work, so hopefully money to live on won't be an immediate concern. Having been through a flood and a tornado, it takes a while to find out just what you need. And it is always hard to ask friends. None of us ever want to have to ask for help, and when we have to it is so very hard.

Norma,
I was thinking the same thing. When she gets settled somewhere ( it may be weeks from now) and things get more normal for her, I would love to help her start a new fabric stash. I'm sure she isn't concerned about that kind of stuff right now, but she'll get back to sewing when things get better and a stash takes a long time to collect on your own.
Of course if there's any basics she needs right now, I'd be happy to help.

Yes I think if she is going to be settled, having things to sew would help with some of the stress. Maybe we could find out what sizes her dear grandchildren are and get some patterns to send down to her. We all know how she loves to sew for her little darlings.

WE might each start our own small "Suzie's BAg" and put into it things we think she might need.. then when we know where she will be, even if its "temporary" housing, we'll be able to send her our "bags".. if she ends up with doubles, she can help out her kids, and we will all have done a really great good deed!!

just my 2 cents...

Would it be insensitive or inappropriate to offer cash in lieu of goods ? I haven't much in "things" that would be of use but I would be more than happy to offer a cheque.
I'd like to know what others think of this idea.

This is what I have planned as well, to send $. When we find out her address we can send it along. I'm gonna tell her it's payment for all the joy and love she has spread around our site.

I was talking to my friend at the post office. She said to check with the post office before you send anything by mail to the areas. She said they have a list of where mail is being delivered and where it isn't. I wanted to send some money to my brother but he is in an area where mail isn't being delivered.

I'd love to help as well, I'm waiting for the site so I can donate cash. I can't imagine what it's like to lose everything and not even have a house to go to.

I think if you are in Canada or in a very distant state cash might be more effective. And that way Susie can get what she needs -- including groceries or whatever.

Let me also suggest that gift cards would be a great idea, once we know what big stores she will be near. JCPennys, Sears, Wal-Mart, Joann's and others all have gift cards that you can buy, and they might be safer to send through the mail than cash, and easier to use than checks. Susie will have to let us know what will be close to her that's open for normal business. We should also ask her to name a few large grocery store chains in the area too. We have a couple of great "Dollar" type stores here, and one sells really good quality kitchen stuff-I'd be happy to pick up a cook set, utensils and linens for her if she needs them. I'd even be happy to send her some of my holiday fabrics that I've already bought for her sewing! I'll keep a watch on this thread for updates.

I wonder if Susie was to open a bank account where she is and post the account number then people could just deposit it straight to her account. It maybe a safer way of getting it to her. Or someone could do so on her behalf and then write a cheque or send a Bank cheque to her.
It is a terrible thing that has happened to so many people.

With all the scams that dishonest people dream up I wonder if posting a bank account # is a good idea. If there is a way it can be made safe so that only Suzie can access it then it is a terrific idea. Could she use a password ?

I think the gift cards is a great idea. If you have large items and can transport them you should contact Susie directly (once we can do that). The rest of us should consider the gift cards.

Mary, Would it be possible to have a whole section (thread?) just for this topic ? Many people who might want to contribute may not even know about it or often look in "take a break". Just a thought.

You are all so wonderful. I am staying in a two bedroom house at the moment with my three sons and their families and we don't need anything at the moment. There are some wonderful people here in this town and if you would like to donate to others you can send it to me and I'll give the ones who have nothing. Love all of you so much it's making me cry. Mary will have my new address. My husband is back to work on Monday and they paid him a full week last week so we are okay on the money end also. Love ya
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

Does anyone know who the big food chains are in the area Susie is at? Or even the gas stations? I myself would rather give gift cards for them to be able to buy food or gas (if they have any) so they may get on with their lives till they can go home. After they can rebuild and move home then I would be willing to give more than that.
