:Canada: Hello ya'll

I just joined tonight & thought I should introduce myself first.

My name is Barbra, I live in Waterloo, Ontario Canada. I'm 51, married, no normal children - mine all have 4 legs each - 4 cats lol. I hand embroider, sew - my own clothes, drapes, comforters & dabble in upholstery. I have my own small-home based business doing hand embroidered pillows, evening purses, shawls & hats. I use all kinds of floss, glass beads, pearls, sequins & silk ribbon in them.

Looking forward to chating with all of you.
Hugs, Barbra

Welcome Barbara! I do a lot of sewing for my grandchildren as well as quilting. I have done quite a bit of hand embroidery in the past but haven't done any for awhile. You'll find lots of new friends and information here! Enjoy!!

Hi Barbra, and welcome to Sew Whats New. :bluesmile

Your business sounds neat. I used to live in Cambridge which isn't all that far from you. Do you take your things to the market there in Waterloo or do you do the craft show thing?

Hello, welcome to our group. Think you'll really like it here. I do hand embroidery, machine embroidery, sew some for grandchildren & others, do & love home dec, quilt also. Don't have a business but feels like it at times. Make lots as gifts & do ever so much for family & friends that don't sew at all. I love to be creative plus try new things or just to see if I can do it. I don't care to sew clothes for myself. Others I can but can seldom get stuff to fit me right.

What a nice welcome for you ladies !!!!!

To answer your question, I sell my items to interior decorators & to some shops in St. Jacobs Village.
Also when I go to my old home for a visit to Monreal, I sell there as well, in a shop in Pte Claire Village in the West Island area.
It took me many years to finally realize that the kind of office work I was doing, did not fulfill me. So I took a big leap (and large pay cut-LOL) & decided to go ahead with it. I wouldn't go back & look forward to someday having my on website or my big big dream - my own shop with tea room!!!

Will chat with you soon!!

Hi, Barbra! I love your dream! And it's nice to find others who still love to do the handwork. I started selling hand-embroidered work back in the late '80's, but moved in other directions. I still love to do hand embroidery... just don't have the time to do much anymore. I'm currently working on a baby quilt that has hand-applique and embroidery on it. Do you do your own designs as well? That really got me started when I realized I could design something and then embroider it.
Welcome and hope to hear more about your work!

Yes - I do design my own patterns, lots of fun & more rewarding for sure
My favourite ones are like the old Blue & White china our grandparents used to have (which I also collect). Plus I like Crewel style, it gives me a real free hand in style combinations. I've just started doing Mountmelnick (white on white) tableclothes - that's a lot of fun too. I've also made, as Christmas presents, gold-thread trumpt angels on tea stained linen, they turned out really pretty. Must make one for myself one day!! LOL
Would love to chat more with you and if you like - directly to me via email at: <email address removed for privacy>

Keep in touch

I do crewel embroidery, too. I like using the wool thread, and mostly on linen. I don't sell it; it has taken me long enough just to get 7 large pieces done for my seven children! I have also done embroidery in silks and cottons.
Actually, mostly I do freemotion machine embroidery and I also wrote a book on that subject, all designs drawn by me. In fact, all the designs I have done are by me. I like to draw designs, as well as other things. I sell the book myself, mostly on the internet. I frequently add new designs to it, and when I do, I send them to everyone who has my book for the price of the postage. I live in Texas and am 78 years old. I've been a professional singer, a professional calligrapher, and a professional seamstress, mostly doing bridal and costumes, but I retired from that when I was in a bad accident and in a wheelchair for 9 months. That's when I did a lot of my hand embroidery; after, of course, my left wrist was healed up. I was thankful that I am right-handed! MariLynntx :coffee2:

Hi 4catmum
I live in Pointe Claire Village and would love to see your work Do you sell to Maison de Calico ? It's only a few steps from my house. I have two cats - a brown-spotted Bengal and a large ginger stray who lives on my back porch with an electric heating pad in his bed all winter.

Hello, I just joined, just discovered you guys. I live in Alabama, and like 4cat mum, i have 4 cats, all rescues. No human children, I am 52, and I do crewel embroidery. Have since I was a child. Just thought that was funny, that we had so much in common.
I sew alterations for a drycleaner at their shop, then, I come home and sew for myself to let the creative juices flow.
I am going now to explore this group's messages.

Must be something about cats and hand-work... I currently have 3 felines, 2 adopted, one rescued. Haven't done as much hand embroidery or beadwork since I took up tie-dye, but I still LOVE doing hand-sewing, even if it's hemming something. And of course, which ever cat happens to be around insists on being on my lap while I'm doing it! Now if it would only snow, I could be perfectly content sitting in my chair, cat in lap, sewing in hand....

Judy, seems every piece I do, whether sewn or embroidered, has at least one cat hair in it somewhere. I have a sign on my fridge says, "the cook is not responsible for cat hair."
