As we all know, Hurricane Katrina has wreaked havoc with millions of people. They are homeless with few if any possessions. We can all pitch in and help in some small way.

BRG suggested we donate quilt blocks or quilts to be donated to those in need. I think this is a wonderful idea. However, we must make sure that our quilts (or whatever else we donate) find the right organization to send these things to.

The Red Cross will not accept goods. They do not have the manpower or the internal setup for small donations. Everything is pretty much still in chaos. They are evacuating people slowly to Houston and other areas.

Now is when we should be making the most of our time. We can put together easy quilts or throws for those less fortunate. When it is announced that organizations can accept goods we will make a decision as to where to send.
I hope this is something we can all do as a "family" to put our talents and stash to good use.

The American Quilters Society is requesting bed and crib quilts. Details should be on their website shortly. If anyone has a problem with any of this, please don't feel obligated to donate.

I would think that baby and children's clothing will also be needed at some time or other. So much tragedy and devastation. Let's pull together and see if we can help out.

Mary,

Good idea! Here is a quote from another sewing board. Maybe sewers who don't quilt could make these.

Whether you sew or not, please pass this along to everyone!!

As Americans sit in their homes watching the nightmare in the gulf
states unfold, many people ask the age old question "what can I do
to help?"

Here's what you can do as a sewer and as a compassionate American:

We want to make pillow cases to hand out to victims of hurricane
Katrina. Children and adults alike will appreciate such a comfort
item,
whether they use it for a pillow or as a bag to carry what few
belongings they still have. Children will appreciate having a soft
item
to snuggle. If pillows are not available to put into the case, clothes
or other items can be placed into the pillowcase and a makeshift pillow
can be created.

*Pillowcases for Comfort:

Take one yard of any 45" wide cotton fabric and fold it in half inside
out making a rectangle. Sew the long and one short side together,
creating a pillow case. The open end should be folded over one inch
and
then folded again 4 inches, creating a wide hem on the open end of the
pillow case.*

Each pillow case only takes one yard of cotton fabric and can be
produced by anyone from beginning to advanced sewer.

We recommend that the pillowcases be gathered by an organized
charity or
church for distribution. Please contact your local charity or church
for the best way to disribute the pillowcases or respond to this email
for further instructions. A great destination would be the Houston
Dome where refugees are being sent.

This is a simple idea that EVERYONE can help with. Let's get started. Please begin to make pillowcases and pass this email to everyone you
know who can sew.

they have a page that have sizes indicated for Children's quilts.
http://www.quilterscache.com/StartQuiltingPages/startquiltingtwo.html. A newborn baby quilt is 25"x30" so I would think your quilts would be OK.

They also have a page about Aid for Katrina victims...one is the same as Magot's

A local church here in my town has distribution channels setup like the Red Cross. They are collecting clothes and the pillow cases local sewers are making. They are taking the first shipment next Thursday. If any of you would like too, you can ship them to me and I will make sure that it gets to the church drop-off to be taken down to the Gulf areas. I just went through my stash and collected about 10 yards of novelty cotton prints that I'm washing. I will be working on the pillowcases for the Thursday deadline. I know this would be hard for people to get too me, because of the holiday weekend, but if you have anything and can ship it overnight on Tuesday, privately email me, and I will send you my address.

Ladies, I'm going to be participating, but through my local church. The Southern Baptist churches here in Oklahoma have a church camp -- Falls Creek -- that they are opening up to take as many of these people as it can hold so, they are going to need clothes, food, bedding, towels, all kinds of toiletries, baby diapers, you name it, so, as a group, our choir (52 strong) is now preparing to roll up our sleeves and get to work here to do what we can to help.

Check out this website for donating homemade and handmade quilts and blankets: www.projectlinus.org. I wrote to them yesterday asking for info about donating blankets. They wrote back saying that they will be posting info on their site soon; they believe that their New Orleans chapter volunteers are victims themselves and that's why they don't have any clear information yet. I was also referred to check out my local chapter here in Buffalo NY. I'm going to email the 2 contacts for this chapter tomorrow. The website lists the chapters by state with an interactive map. This might serve as another avenue to help out the babies and children who have been so terribly affected by this disaster. I can't quilt, but I have lots of flannel and some fleece that I can make into small blankets.

During this holiday weekend, you might also want to contact your local fire department or check your newspapers about drop-off points to make food, water, clothing, and blanket donations. One of our local volunteer fire departments are accepting them until 9 PM Sunday night! It couldn't hurt to find out. My 2 cents worth...

The Red Cross says stuff isn't getting through. They don't have the resources to get things to people. What they want is money. Things just end up piled up some place.

Hi, fellow forum members. I'm sure I'm not the only one here that has been trying to think of something I could do to help the Katrina victims. I have decided today that for the foreseeable future, I plan to donate 50% of my net profits from tie-dye sales to the Red Cross, or any of the other charitable organizations that are bringing assistance and relief to the victims. I would like to suggest that others here who sell their handiwork might consider doing something similar, if you can afford it.

God Bless,

Our local bases are taking in those from Keesler AFB ,MS (it's gone). Since Susie has said she doesn't need things right now. I figured I'd donate to the base, which I KNOW needs plenty of things. They're setting up housing and hospital tents on our fairgrounds, plus opening up whatever we have in the way of shelter. (old barracks, TLF, hotel rooms, etc) Keesler has asked for baby blankets, diapers, etc...

But I asked her first, since I gave her first choice...
I can make blankets ( I have enough 'stuff' for that and pillow cases...)
A neighbor has a microwave, another has stuffed animals and small clothes...
So far we're getting the neighborhood together to give to the AF. most of us are retired or active AF.

We'll find ways of helping....thanks everyone !!! Susies better off than most...
she's lucky and resiliant..

My husband's company is matching our donations to the Red Cross. That doubles our effort and they can afford it. They know it won't be much since they know their employees don't make a lot of money!

From my stash I was able to make 14 pillow cases. With the renaments from those (not quite a yard or half a yard), I started making baby & toddler size quilts. These are nothing fancy, just a quick way to make something light weight and functional. The instructions follow...
I take whatever size cotton material I have left & cut another to the same size. (right sides of material facing). Then I layout a light weight batting (I have some batting for crib quilts) on top and cut it to the same size. I then pin these layers together. I use my serger and serge all sides, leaving about a 12" opening to turn the quilt. I turn the quilt, slip stich the opening, and then on my regular machine, I quilt it. Fast & Easy. It is also reversable. Nothing fancy, but functional. Just thought I would post this for anyone who is or wants to make fast quilts for the hurricaine victiims. This is also a great way to use odds and ends of your stash.

I received this email this morning. If you have extra quilts, please

Dear friends,
Only today did I discover the ghastly scope of the Hurricane Katrina
aftermath, and I immediately started trying to decide what we could
do to help muster aid for the victims. Here is what we have come up
with. This will be posted on our website (www.quilts.com) in the
morning. I am terribly concerned about the urgency of the short-
term needs of these poor souls--25,000 of them are being bussed to
Houston for shelter and perhaps long-term living arrangements. Most
of them left New Orleans with nothing but the clothes on their
backs. I know there are other projects that are being started for
quilts for long-term needs, but right now, folks, these people have
NOTHING and most of them have NOTHING to go home to. They need help
NOW! I hope you'll want to help us provide some of that help.

QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA
A Cooperative Project
To Comfort Victims of Hurricane Katrina

To quilters everywhere:
The devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast is
beyond belief. Here in Houston our hearts are heavy with sorrow for
all the horrible losses, and we are preparing to welcome the
thousands of refugees that are being bussed to us because they have
lost their homes or have no access to whatever is left of their
homes. Like so many other people, we want to help. Knowing
quilters, we think you want to help, too, because there are no more
generous, giving, open-hearted people than quilters.
Therefore, we are launching a two-part drive for Hurricane Katrina
relief, and we urge you to join us in this project. We're calling it
QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA.

PART 1: Urgent Donations to the American Red Cross Disaster
Relief Fund. We will match EVERY donation made by quilters to the
American Red
Cross, up to a maximum of $10,000, on a dollar for dollar basis. In
other words, if you make a $25 donation, we'll match that with
another $25 donation. If you make a $100 donation, we'll match that
with another $100 donation, right up to the maximum. To avoid delays
in your donations reaching the Red Cross, and because we have
trusted quilters for more than 30 years now, just email us with the
amount of your donation that you sent to the American Red Cross
Disaster Relief Fund. Every penny of every donation--up to $10,000--
will be matched by International Quilt Festival. You have my word on
that. Please use this email address: <email address removed for privacy> and use the
subject line: RED CROSS DONATION.

PART 2: QUILTS FOR COMFORT
Many thousands of the Katrina refugees are being sent to Houston
RIGHT NOW, and no one knows how long they will have to be here.most
of them escaped the hurricane's fury with only the clothes on their
backs--nothing more--and they may have absolutely nothing to go home
to. They don't even know. The Astrodome is ready as temporary
housing, but there is a serious shortage of bedding.

Part 2 of QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA is the collection of quilts ofall
kinds to be distributed to the refugees here in Houston so that they
have something soft to sleep on instead of the hard concrete floors
of the temporary shelters and something warm to cover up with
against the chill of otherwise welcome air-conditioning (we've been
in the 90s and 100s for weeks now).

Many of us have unfinished projects filling our closets and
cupboards. Get out one of those projects--twin size preferred but
no smaller than baby quilt size, please--and finish it up for this.
Use lightweight batting--do whatever binding is the quickest, even a
close zigzag stitch. You don't have to quilt it--tie it! If you have
only small projects, add borders. Think about a mother lying on the
floor cradling her baby--that's the size quilt we need to provide.
These quilts are not meant to be heirlooms, although they will
probably be treasured for many years s a symbol of the caring of
strangers. Tie them, machine quilt them, work in a group with your
friends and finish several on an assembly line, do whatever it takes
to get these finished quickly.
THE NEED FOR THESE QUILTS IS RIGHT NOW! If you already have some
finished pieces that you don't have plans for, send them too, asl
ong as they are no smaller than baby quilt size. If you are a
professional, you may have sample quilts that have become shop-worn
or faded but are still clean and very usable in an emergency--send
them!--we are IN an emergency! Be sure to put a label on the back
of your quilt or sign it with a kind thought and your name and date.
Every piece will go to a refugee family driven from their homes by
the hurricane.

To participate in QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA, send an email to
<email address removed for privacy> (subject line: COMFORT AMERICA) to let us know how
many quilts you are sending. That will help us help the Red Cross
in its planning. Please do not expect a confirmation that your quilt
has been received or any kind of nice thank-you. Sometimes we just
have to do things because they are the RIGHT things to do--this is
one of those times. People need help...the kind of help WE can give.

Use this address to send your quilt/s:
COMFORT AMERICA PROJECT
c/o International Festival
7660 Woodway, Suite 550
Houston, TX 77063
Please note: for security, do NOT use the word 'quilt' ANYWHERE
in your address label!
many of us have also amassed linen closets full of old but
completely usable sheets--perhaps a size you no longer use, or
juvenile prints that your college age kids don't like anymore. Clean
sheets and blankets are also most welcome to QUILTERS COMFORT
AMERICA. Naturally, everything should be clean and fresh. These
folks have lived with enough mud and dirt to last them the rest of
their lives--let's give them a clean bed to rest in. Please note
that we cannot use fabric, patterns, scraps, etc. Quilt Festival
will serve as the collection point for these quilts, and we will
deliver them DAILY to the American Red Cross staffing the refugee
centers in Houston, where they will be distributed by the Red Cross
volunteers. Because we are right herein Houston where more than
10,000 of the refugees will be, we can make a difference RIGHT
NOW...if you'll help.

Time is critical--the need is NOW! People are arriving by the hour,
children are bedding down on the cold concrete, bedding is needed by
people of all ages who have lost everything in this horrible storm.
Please help if you can. If you live in or around Houston, you are
welcome to hand deliver your donations to us. Our address is 7660
Woodway, Suite 550, Houston 77063. You can find it on Mapquest.
Please note that this is one block of Woodway that runs
perpendicular to all the rest of Woodway.

Thanks to everyone!

QUILTERS COMFORT AMERICA.

14 of our local Hydro workers left Thurs for New Orleans to help restore electricity. They had so many volunteers they couldn't spare them all but they chose 14 for now, likely others will take turns as needed.
14 doesn't sound like much help but it sure must because the electric company that called for them sure were grateful.

My kids & I wanted to help but $ is a problem. So when I heard about an RV company taking supplies down My DD called to see if they would take clothes & toys. The person answering the phone said sure so they drove about 20 miles to take some very good clothes & toys that we had for a garage sale that didn't happen. When they got there they were told they couldn't take any of it past the Tennessee border so they were only accepting food, water, & $. My kids ended up turning around & taking everything back 20 + miles to the goodwill. Then I read in todays paper that a church in the area collected clothes & toys whith the other stuff & went down there. They are bringing back 150 survivors & our schools are opening an empty school for them to live in until they can find something better. My kids that did this on their own because I was out of town were between the ages of 14- 21. I hope they don't get disappointed about helping because of this experiance.
I am going to have them go through their stuff again so if they get the people here we can help.

After hurricane Ivan last year, we were without power for 4 days (sounds like very little, but when it's 100 degrees with 50% or better humidity, you get hot and your animals get hot and bugs starts comming in your house.....)

We were SO greatful to see power people in their trucks, we'd cheer at them on the streets and guess where most of them came from...Canada. Montreal to be exact...and Ohio...we'd honk our horns, yell thank you, give them water, feed them. anything....

Anyone who volunteers or gets sent to another state to help out, gets a
B I G thanks from me and I hope they get all the blessings and good things they deserve....because they deserve a LOT !

Reading your post I thought you might be from Lansing and sure enough you are- I am too. That was very thoughtful what your kids did - I'm sure they could probably use some of it at the school they are opening up. I am so proud of MI taking in some of the victims.

You know, it does not matter to me personally, but my state is doing a lot and getting no media recognition.. And getting red tape from the head of one of the destitute states.. A portable hospital unit from UNC at Chapel Hill went to Mississippi. They called and got permission and were told where to go, and when they got there, the governors office said , just wait there, we don't know what to do with you.. This relief effort needs a Rudy Guiliani type leader.. We are receiving evacuees being flown in and bussed in, and are being received for processing in the Coliseum here in town.. People are taking families into their homes and looking for more permanent types of homes for them while they are here. The Salv. Army has received some in a hotel they own and operate.. Our own Carolinas med. Ctr . sent a portable Hosp. unit out a couple of days ago. They are set up and operating somewhere in Mississippi, I understand.. But the media keeps saying only 3 states have offered to take some of the burden off of Texas..My town is not the only town receiving evacuees either.. I have heard all of the larger towns in the state named today as receiving them.. I just don't know why they keep saying only 3 states. (heard that all day yesterday, also)

My sister told me today that the buses are in New Orleans & only 5 people want to come to Lansing.Duh there are not many people left in New Orleans shouldn't the buses be at one of the overcrowded shelters? I guess I will wait & see what tomorrow brings on the news. My nephew & his wife put out signs & are collecting food, clothing & personel hygeine items for the people if they get here. it was there 6 YO's idea.
