I have a Bernina Deco 600 and I'm having a problem..hoping someone might have an idea of what could be wrong. I got part way through a design and heard this 'clunk clunk' noise and the needle broke. (This part isn't a new problem...I just change needles and keep going). But this time the machine will sew maybe 20 stiches and the clunk starts up again and the machine stops and indicates ' check to see if thread is tangled'...which it isn't. The noise gets pretty loud and I'm afraid if I try to run it anymore, I'll do damage. I took the plate off and cleaned everything so I know there isn't dust in there now. I did notice that the shank (the needle clamp? ..not sure what it's called) that holds the needle moves slightly to the right and left...not sure if it did that before or not. Is it supposed to?? If the shank/needle clamp is supposed to be secure, then that's probably the problem. I'd like to see if there's something I can do to fix it before I take it in to the dealer....it's almost 50 miles away!
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hello,

Are you using a different thread ? I've experienced similar problem before and all the thread jammed in the bobbin. I've spend 2 hours checking the machine, but after all, after I've change another brand of thread, it works all right. I don't know why, but I never use that thread again. So far it's O.K.

I sounds like some sort of timing problem. You might try removing your slide plate and whatever can be removed from the bobbin case area and really clean and brush everything out. I don't know much about this machine but if you can raise and lower your feed dogs, raise them up and clean under them with a brush. It may be that you have old thread caught in the feed dogs or bobbin case area and that is messing up your timing. If you are using a bobbin that you threaded, I'd put it on the thread spindle and wind in onto a new bobbin. Make sure that you wind the thread around the bobbin tension from front to back and toward the bobbin spindle as you wind your thread. This helps keep the tension and makes the thread feed smoothly. Your thread should be smooth with no loops or bumps and be feed evenly from top to bottom to top of the bobbin. Be sure that when you wind your bobbin there is no tag of string hanging from the bobbin. Place your bobbin in the case, checking to make sure that it is facing the right direction and is caught under the spring.

Once in a while my thread gets caught under or in the spindle area...it gets too tight and breaks the needle.

I'd replace the needle and make sure that it is firmly in position, facing the right direction and rethread the whole upper portion of the machine, making sure that it is threaded with the presser foot up. Most machines have some play in the needle but I've never had an embroidery only machine so I don't know if that is true of those or not.

I'm sure that you've done most of this, but beyond checking each of these steps and making sure that your machine is as clean as possible. The only other thing I know that could be wrong is if the design is just too dense. Have you used this company's design before? Even with a good company, the quality of the design may vary from digitizer to digitizer within the company. If you have software you might be able to remove some of the underlay and help the problem. If you have another hoop you might hoop something and try to either continue your design in that hoop (so that the underlying parts are not there in case it is too dense) or try a different design that you've done in the past. If the problem is in the design, your machine should work just fine.

The last other thing I know to do is to take it in (unfortunately). With the price of gasoline, I know that is a last resort right now. My machine was having problems with embroidery with #90 needles. It make a terrible flat scrunchy sound and immedicately tied the bottom thread into a terrible mess...something that you don't want to let happen very long. It had to be adjusted by the tech. It may be that your machine is just a little out of time and needs a minor adjustment that becomes more obvious as you sew.

Thanks for all of your helpful input. I really have tried everthing...cleaning, changing bobbin thread, trying a different design, etc...but still no luck. I did call the dealer yesterday and he said that it sounded like a broken part in the needle shaft so I guess I'll take it in. He was really nice about understanding the gas prices..since I have to drive so far....and said that if the problem was what he thought it was, he'd work on the machine while I waited (or went shopping for an hour or so)...which I thought was so nice of him. It'll be next week before I can get it there, but I'll check back to let you know what the problem was! ...meanwhile, I'll be in withdrawl from my machine! :re:

If if is any consolation, you and I both will be on a Bernina Embroidery-free diet. My 200 has a problem that is causing it not to boot. I took it down for it's last cleaning before the first part of the warrenty ran out telling them that it was stopping while embroidering. The tech forgot to check for that. He sent it home and I called him because I was still having problems. They replaced 2 boards with the second trip. After 20,050 stitches it froze. After several vain attempts to reboot I called him again and took it back...they replaced, insulated, did all kinds of things but nothing worked. I spent all of yesterday afternoon in and out of the shop, helping test the machine, shopping in the area, waiting to see if he could figure it out. At least I had several things I had to do while I was "in town". It is on its way back to the company for personal attention. Bernina will be doing all of this under warrenty. Fortunately, the warrenty will continue to cover the boards for a few years longer.

I'm glad that your dealer is willing to work with you. Hopefully your machine will be fixed and you'll be on your way right away.

Once when I had this problem I noticed I had a bobbin that was just 'slightly' taller than the others in my box. I switched bobbins and that fixed it.

Just another thing to try.

The gremlins must be out and about, I have a brother 180D (same machine as the deco with the brother name) and as of an hour ago is it possessed, halfway through a design it offset itself about an inch and started sewing REALLY fast, and started to smell funny and wouldn't stop when I hit the stop button, had to cut the power switch on the power bar!! Tried several designs, on the cards and the built in ones, all did the same thing plus the upper thread kept pulling under the fabric producing rat nests. So she is messed up. Found my receipt (finally) and it is still under warrenty for electrical etc but the service centre is 1 1/2 hours drive away in Dartmouth. Sigh.... I emailed the company and hopefully will hear back tomorrow.

Update: I didn't have to take the machine in afterall. DH checked it over for me, and found that if he tightened the needle shaft with a little Allen wrench it tightened up enough to fix the problem. The bobbin case was a little out of alignment, too, so he fixed that and now it runs like it did before! Now I'm back to my 'daily fix' of embroidering! :bg:
