But I really am in unfamiliar territory. I'm pretty creative and computer savvy so I have decided to branch out and start sewing (mainly decorative items for my home) and I would really love to start doing embroidery. My daughter loves personalized items and I have a friend who is starting to do embroidered cloth diapers.

What you recommend for me. I'm willing to spend money on a nice machine, but I really don't know where to start.

My personal favorite brand is Janome. I have a Janome Memory Craft 10000 sewing/embroidery machine, and I love it! This is no longer the top of the line since they just came out with the 11000, but it is a great machine! You can go to their website to check out all their machines. Janome also makes an embroidery only machine. There are other good brands on the market--Husqvarna/Viking and Bernina to name a couple.

Basically, I would recommend going to local reliable dealers and "test driving" a few machines. I would recommend purchasing from a local dealer so that you will have dealer support when/if you need it. In my opinion, you need to decide what your particular sewing needs are and then find the machine that is right for you.

Also be aware that you can also find out online which machines have problems. (www.google.com)

Usually a machine thats H E A V Y will have more metal parts than one thats light. Metal means more use, less repair. Stay away from Wal Mart and places that sell cheap machines from people who DON'T sew.

Everyone on here has an opinion of their fav machine and how well it works.
But YOU are buying a machine to please YOU and your needs. Go EVERWHERE you can, take fabric and 'test drive'.

Also be aware you aren't just buying a machine to sew/embroider with. You're buying thread ( LOTS of thread), stabilizers, ( LOTS of DIFFERENT stabilizers), needles ( 4 designs are usually the max for 1). Extras, like hoops, extension tables, patterns (on and off line....you can run up some nice credit card bills online...there are SOOOOOOOOO many great designs, you have to have them all). The new machines also use USB, Flash Cards, their own CD readers, Memory Sticks, Amazing Boxes. You'll need software to unzip files or convert to your machines format. (in case you order wrong or it doesn't come in your format) You like to digitize...then theres THAT.
Scissors, (embroidery scissors are a MUST to cut all those small threads). Spray to stick stabilizer. (unless you use the adhesive kind). Bobbins by the dozen. ( prewound are a GREAT thing). Thread holders for your machine ( I love my 10 spool from Martha Pullen).

Now my 10 cents. Before I bought my embroidery machines. I researched online and people I spoke to. I went to all the shops. (Viking, Bernina, Babylock, etc....) I bought a Janome 10000 2 yrs ago. (upgraded to a 10001 now). Then I bought their Compulock (serger), then last year they had a buy a 6500 Pro Quilter and get a 300E (embroidery only for 1/2 price) well of course I couldn't pass that up either. Now I'm looking to buy the new 11000.
I'm happy with my Janome's. To me they're like magic...slip in a card/flash card, usb cable and thread it and off you go...

So I suggest you look for YOUR magic.... :bg:
