This was sent to me yesterday. If you can help, please respond here. I would like some information on replacing a zipper in men's pants. They are khaki dress pants. MaryW

Does the zipper need to be replaced completely, or has the zipper pull up thingy (very technical term) broken and needs to be replaced? If its the pull up thingy you may be able to just open up enough of the waistband to replace that piece alone rather than have to redo the whole thing.

I Would Remove The Zipper If That Is The Case To Have To Totally Replace. Leave The Topstitching On The Front. Do Not Remove It! Replace The Zipper On The Underneath Piece With The Machine--carefully Lining Up The Zipper And Fabric. I Then Put The Other Side Of The Zipper In By Hand And The Top Stitching Is Already Done For You. |

I always take out the zipper and the topstitching, otherwise there's no way to sew in the zipper without it showing on the top of the fly. It does take time and patience. Baste the zip in if you don't do this often. When I first started doing alterations it could take almost an hour to do this, now I can get a zipper in in 15 minutes or less. Unsewing is a neccessary evil and I buy the best seam ripper on the market, a surgical scaple with a replacable blade. I used to use a razor blade but the scaple is much faster.
