I need some help NOW! I am helping a friend sew for an upcoming wedding. I finally finished the 9 men's shirts that she gave me to do and I need to send them in yesterday! Now my automatic buttonholer isn't working correctly. No matter what size button I place in it, it gives me a 3/4" hole. Too big for the 5/8" buttons I have. Why is it doing this?

I don't know why it's doing that, although I have a hunch taking a good hard look at the device will lend you a clue. I found that my success with my automatic buttonhole attachment was very variable. That's frustrating, to me. Enough so to sit down and learn how to make one without a device. It took me 10 mins to learn, and now I don't have to do and re-do them. It takes _forever_ to rip out those satin stitches, and takes a toll on them fashion fabric!! I usually manage by marking the fabric at the start and stop points, and then doing a single test run to get the stitch length & width right, and then bingo, they go nice and quickly. And I swear so much less frequently than I used to!

I get very frustrated with my automatic buttonholer, especially if the button is three dimensional (they pop out). I found that the device that holds the button gets stuck just open enough to mess up your hole. I made myself learn how to do one without the stupid, finicky attachment.

I'm not sure what is up with yours although it just might be a wear issue that you might need to look at. I am with everyone else on this though on a different level. When DH got me a new machine it came with the auto buttonhole, when I gave them a try I just really didn't like how picky it was. I kept pulling out my mom's old machine (I learned to sew on & inherited) that had all the buttonhole plates & etc. I decided finally to order all the buttonhole plates & attachments for the new machine, haven't looked back, have great buttonholes. I have to give credit to people that do them complete without aid, I don't know if I'd have the patience. I have also found (maybe others already knew this) that a little tear away stabilizer under the buttonhole really helps my newer machine come out with a perfect buttonhole. I don't know why I had so little problem with the old machine, but the new machine is a little more persnickety, but end result looks wonderful.
