I got a look at the new Marie Osmond machine yesterday. It will come with Explorations Lite software and sell for $499. The bad news is that the stitch field will only be 4x4. However, at $499 with software it will be an attractive first machine. They will offer a embroidery club with this machine for 19.99 a month (that's the price I was quoted) that will allow access to several thousand (and growing) designs. Almost as attractive as the price and software will be the fact that it will NOT REQUIRE AN ADDITIONAL BOX but accept DIRECT DOWNLOADS from the computer. That takes care of one potentially large hidden charge! I think that the machine will have a place in the market.

That's the one. I did not see it in use so I don't know exactly how the machine "sees" the designs or how it operates...just another machine option at a good price to investigate.
