I have a cable knit sweater that I want to cut up and make into a purse. Has anyone done this before? I'm afraid that as soon as I cut into it, it will unravel before I can do anything with it. I was thinking that I should draw the lines on it and use my serger to cut and overcast then sew it up. I'm not a knitter at all. Any advice / tips would be appreciated. thanks, Jen |

Jen, I think your idea would work wel, as long as your serger doesn't mind bulky projects, mine's very finicky. I would cut out the lining (or an inner lining) and sew it on the sweater then cut outside the sewn lines, then coplete the purse. Good Luck! Teri

If you sew a straight line on the edge of where you want to cut, then cut the sweater on the outside of your seam line, it won't unravel, but careful not to stretch it too much. It sounds like its going to be adorable, and I'd love to see a pic when its done. I also agree with Teri about lining it

Thanks for the advice. I expect to get it done as soon as I get a matching lining. Getting pictures from my camera onto the computer is a little slow for me, sometimes I feel so computer illiterate! Anyway, I hope it turns out well, the sweater has sentimental value and has been in my closet for years (very out of fashion). Jen |

I would sew a line too. You might look at putting a interlining on the purse at the same time that you sew it. That would probably insure that it doesn't stretch and it would give some stability to the edges. Although I think the serging idea is a good one, I think that it could give you some problems that you don't want. Your idea should turn out well. I wish I had thought of that when I threw away some of my favorite sweaters because of wear.

I just ran across this little item and thought of your project. You might check this out to see if there are any good tips for your purse. I checked out the site Pam, it sounds interesting but a lot of hand work. I'm thinking I might even try a light weight woven iron-on interfacing on the back which would help stop it from stretching out of shape. Stitching a straight line sounds most logical. I hardly use my serger at all so I don't even know if it would take a thick sweater. My dad is coming into town today so I won't be able to start it for a couple days (or maybe grandpa can play with the kids and I can sew more?). I am so obsessive with sewing these days, I'm dreaming about making stuff! Jen |

I've seen things for recycling jumpers into cushions and they sew first cut after. Even here on our own site http://www.sew-whats-new.com/projects/sweaterslippers.shtml how to make slippers from an old sweater! love and kisses, Jan

My instructions say " make 2 rows of stitching and cut between the rows to get your fabric pieces". This way, you don't lose any of the leftovers. They don't ravel because all cut edges have been 'stay stitched' so to speak..
