Hi! I have gotten back into crazy quilting, but don't want to make 'Quilts' per se... I am looking for pattern ideas that I can use the quilted fabric to make. Right now I am making a small pocket purse, but I got a brainstorm about using the fabric for stuffed toys, like bears. Has anyone tried someting like that?

A while back one of the Big 4 pattern companies had a pattern for a crazy quilt stuffed bear. It was really cute. The object was to teach you crazy quilting on a small project, or patchwork quilting. It had both versions. I have seen crazy quilt jackets, vests, purses, tote bags. The options are endless as to the use of it.

I haven't tried it but I have seen it done for pillows, pockets, etc. The pieces would have to be smaller in size for smaller projects.

I have made a crazy patterned tote. I had a few 10" squares left over from a flannel "crazy" quilt.. I was able to make a 12 x 10 inch tote. Since it was flannel, I was able to rag it...

I like it :bg:

There is a lady at one of the quilt shops here in the Ottawa area that gives a class on how to make a crazy patchwork vest - it was very nice. She was giving a demo on crazy quilting and was wearing one. I would love to take her class but the store where she gives classes is quite a long distance from where I live. Maybe some time down the road I will take it.

I have a book somewhere that describes foundation crazy-quilting, where you attach your scraps to a backing of muslin instead of just connecting the pieces to each other. By using that method, I was able to design my crazy-quilt pattern beforehand to fit vest pattern pieces. You can see the result here: http://www.angelfire.com/retro/tiedyejudy/Crazy_Quilt_Vest.jpg.

I have done a few things with crazy quilting! I love the versitility and colorfulness of it! Stuffed animals, pillows, card fronts (using card stock with a 'window' on the front), vests, purses,.........! Really, anything that you can sew - - can be crazy quilted. Pillowcase edges (made with light weight fabrics) even!!
Will you be embroidering your work? I have done it both ways and prefer the embroidered way. It just adds so much!! Have fun!

Note: I just sold this one yesterday! My first purse sale!

I have also found a bloggers ring for those who embelish, and it is very inspiring! Here is the link, if you want to check it out:

a delight to look at.. so... you sew different fabrics onto a muslin type piece of fabric... then you embelish it with embrodery yarns and/or beads.

I did not know what a "blog" was either.. and really do not know for sure.. I believe it is about setting up a daily 'journal' for the world to view....

Is that correct.

thanks for the "bloggers' site.. it is a wonderful source of ideas..

Thanks for your kind words, Karen! In this case, I just start with a piece of fabric cut with five sides, then sew another piece of fabric to one of the sides, trim the edges with my rotary cutter and a straightedge, then rotate to the next side and repeat. I sew the pieces on in a clockwise direction and keep going until I have a piece large enough for the pattern I am using. In this case, I made 3 pieces about 7 1/2 by 8, then sewed them together on the long side. Then I do the embroidery and embellishments.

As for 'Blogs', you're right - it is a web journal that can be used for any number of things. I happened upon the 'Bloggers who Embellish' ring when I did a websearch on 'Crazy Quilt'. A Webring is a place where you can link your blog or website that has a common theme. I used to maintain a ring for my arts and crafts association in California, which meant I would approve submissions to the ring and ensure that the applicants had the webring code on their website. Far too much techical information, huh? But I do love browsing the blogs of others who have common interests, just as I love forums such as this one where we can chat about the things we love to do!

Happy stitching,

Judy

So... I am making a crazy quilt vest, and the fabrics are all so beautiful I almost don't want to clutter them up with embellishments! Is there a rule that says you MUST embellish?

Judy, one of the nice things about quilting and sewing is you can do whatever you want!!! I say if you love the fabrics without the embellishment, then don't put any on!! Will you show us a pic when you are done?

Thanks, Lyn... forgot for a moment that I get to make the decisions! Yes, I sure will post the finished product! I have had this vest pattern for a few years, and love it because it actually fits!

Judy, I don't know of a rule that says that you have to embellish. Or even how much to embellish. My great-grandmother used to do simple feather stitches on the seams and that was enough to "add to" the fabrics to make them special. I have seen crazy quilt with no embellishment. Whether or not you embellish; how much you embellish; with what you embellish; it is all a matter of taste! Maybe you would rather use a narrow ribbon instead of floss. Or, if you do decide to do "a bit of something", doing all the stitching in the same color wouldn't be obtrusive and would have a unifying effect. Could you do a sample block and try some stitching on it to see if you would like it or not?? (I hate to rip out embroidery stitching!!!) Let us know what you decide!! Bev

Thanks for the web sites.. I want to do one of these sweatshirt thingies.. and now the pattern I have makes a lot more sense...

It is funny that one designer advises to WASH prior to and the other says "NOT YET".

I will try the HGTV method..

Karen.

I have made two of the sweat shirt jackets. I love them. I didn't wash until I was done and there was no problem with that. I want to make another one as soon as there is time.
