Christie, check out Keepsake Quilting's website; they have 3 Christian wallhangings in their latest catalogue. It looks like a stained glass window and then each with a word: love, peace, joy.

Also, somewhere there's a book out with all Christian themed items to sew/quilt. I don't recall the name of it but it might have been at the same site.

Hi again,

These aren't what I meant when I mentioned the book, but I was able to find the following titles ..... I'll just have to keep searching for the other in the meantime.
1) With Sacred Threads: Quilting and the spiritual life
2) Quilting Flowers of the Bible by Helga Curtis
3) The Patchwork Pilgrimage: How to create vibrant church decorations with Quilting Techniques by Jill Liddell.

I hope this helps.

Hi Christie,

Don't know if you're a quilter, but if so, there's a book by "That Patchwork Place" titled "Biblical Blocks - Inspired Designs for Quilters", by Rosemary Makhan. Printed in 2001 (my copy anyway), I'm pretty sure it's still around.

Also, have you looked at the regular pattern companies? McCalls, Simplicity, etc.? I would think there'd be something there, especially this time of year as we get ready for the Christmas season. Sometimes, fabric stores, including Wal-mart (if there's one in your area) carry fabric on the bolt that will be a panel for a wall hanging or a pillow.

Can you be a little more specific about what you're looking for? I'd sure like to find more Christian themed crafts myself, so I'll be following this thread closely.

Often times, when I look through catelogs, I'll see items and think "I can make that myself". So, you might pay more attention to that, too.

The "Current" Corporation, the big stationery, card and everything else gift catalog has a special additional catalog for "Inspirational Gifts". Also, "Best to You" is a Christian gift company, maybe you could cull some ideas from their catalogs, too.

One thing I incorporated into some of my gifts was to print, paint, embroider or whatever a verse of scripture onto a pillow, pillowcase, bookcover - the ideas are endless, really. You could make your own recipe cards with a verse of scripture added.

I'll do some googling myself, too and see what I can come up with. Please keep me posted too. I'm sure there'll be all kinds of answers for you in no time. Blessings!

P.S. The "Oriental Trader", a gift and craft catalog actuall has a lot of inexpensive Christian themed crafts, although they are more geared to kids.

Hi Christie,

Please forgive me. I must've forgotten that you specified wall hangings by the time I started to reply to you. It's been a loooongg day, my son had surgery today.

Okay, have you tried wwwpatternpage.com/patterns.htm ? This site has links to over 4000 patterns, some of which are Christian themed. I found one in their alphabetical listing at www.christianpatterns.com/ . This one does have patterns for a variety of things to hang on the wall. I'm sure there were others, on down that list. Good luck to you. Found it by Googling "patterns Christian themed wall hangings". Blessings.

Quilting Granny,

Thanks for all your help....it did get me thinking about some other possibilities!
I am looking for patterns for wall hangings that would be more detailed than many of the patterns for the stain glass look. I've seen patterns that use the iron on material that you put behind each of the pieces...but I haven't seen any with a Christian Theme. I have one that I bought for two 10 X 14 wall hangings of humming birds near two flowers.....I probably won't get that one done until I am a granny myself! I would like an actual picture (applique looking) instead of a regular quilt block inspired by the Bible.

Blessings!

I watched an episode of Simply Quilts a long time ago where they took the Mona Lisa and broke it down in to squares. I searched the site but cannot find the episode it's been over a year ago that I saw it. Anyway, by using only squares she created an image of the mona lisa. I thought it was a very interesting thing to do and I immediately thought about using the idea to create something for my dad who is a pastor. I figured that I could use a cross stitch pattern (since it's already broken down into squares) to create a Christian wall hanging for him. I searched but could not find any 'free' cross stitch patterns with a Christian theme that I liked. However, in my search I found a site for a free trial of a cross stitch pattern maker. This program allows you to take any image and, using your own specs, create a pattern. I finally found an image online that I really liked. It's an image of Jesus nice and bright and colorful and I turned it into a cross-stitch pattern. Now, in order to get all the detail that it needs to look right I have to cut the fabric into 1" squares (finishing at 1/2") and the finished piece will be over 5' wide and 6' long. I haven't started it yet. But, my point, this can be done with smaller images. I did find a pattern of a dove with an olive branch (lost it since then) that would finish at about 2' square. That pattern also had a lot of empty space that would allow for writing a verse. I saw a quilt done like this of the Last Supper and it was GORGEOUS!!! It took the man a couple of years to complete but it was absolutely awesome.

I have also seen any number of ways to create an image on a quilt. You could try finding a child's coloring book and blowing up an image and using an applique to create it. I highly suggest watching Simply Quilts (on HGTV in the a.m. and DIY in the afternoon). Otherwise you can look at the website www.hgtv.com and search through episodes of Simply Quilts for ideas. Hope this helps.

I did some more searching and I found the the episode I was looking for. The page gives instructions for how to make the Mona Lisa quilt they did on the show, but it explains the process better than I can! ttp://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_qlt/article/0,1805,HGTV_3876_1626271,00.html

And for clarification, this method does NOT require sewing thousands of little squares. You lay the squares out onto single sided fusible then iron in place and fold then sew. It's much simpler.

Charity,

I copied and pasted the HGTV website you gave me, but it took me to the HGTV site and not an exact show. I tried to search "Mona Lisa" and "Mona Lisa Wall Hanging" and it did not give the exact show. I looked at "Quilts", but there are many, many shows/info. but had no luck. I does sound like something I could use, if I can get onto the right page. Can you help me more? Thanks so much for looking for me!

Blessings,

Charity,

OOPS! I tried it, again, and got it to work. What a website! Thank you so much for your help. It isn't quite what I am looking for, but it has me thinking of possibly another avenue.

There is a small software package (not very expensive) that you can buy that will take any photo and put it into as many squares as you designate, and will provide you with a palette and a grid to create your picture in fabric.

It is very easy to use and was demonstrated on Nancy Zieman's show a while back. There is a book as well. I believe she sells both on her website.

there are lots of other quilt ideas if you look through some of the episodes. One I think is called "Snippet Sensations" where they use double sided fusible and just snip the fabric into areas for color. They made a vase of flowers for the show, but can be adapted to other things. I don't quilt often but I like to watch the show anyway, and I have TONS of ideas.

All Simply Quilts Episodes
http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/episode_archive/0,1783,HGTV_3876_54,00.html

Snippet Sensations (there aren't any directions for this one, just a pic  )
http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/cr_quilting_other/article/0,1789,HGTV_3305_1376668,00.html

Free Standing Applique (looks really nice)
http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/cr_quilting_instructions/article/0,1789,HGTV_3302_3351952,00.html

There are so many other options if you look through some of the episodes. Try to look through the newer ones (they are at the bottom of the list) to make sure they have actual instructions. If you like the snippet one, let me know and I'll see if I can jot down some instructions, cause I actually saw that show. Hope this helps, I am sure you can find something in all these shows that will be what you are looking for.

Charity,

You have been such a help! Thank you, thank you! I would love to have notes about the snippet one. It looks so interesting and I love the texture you can produce with that one. I finally feel like I am getting somewhere for the amount of time I have been looking!

Double Blessings!

Ok...let's see if I am capable of making this make sense to someone other than myself. First, you take your fabrics and iron on the double sided fusible. Then peel off the protective paper. If you have large shapes then you can leave the paper on to cut it out, that's up to you. Find your background fabric, whatever size you need, and lay it out, preferably on a surface where you can use your iron. Then you take the fabric that has the fusible and start snipping little pieces into the areas of you want them. Trade out fabrics for multi colored dimension and fill the 'picture' in. The 'snippetts' can be very small or larger, it all depends on what look you are going for. When you are done snipping all your colors in to place, then use your iron and iron all of them to the background. Now all you have to do is quilt. According to the show stippling is the best way to quilt one of these. Start from the center and move outward, changing thread color if needed for each area.

If this doesn't make any sense to you then let me know and I'll try to write it out differently with more details. And perhaps I could even draw some pictures or something. I'm not very good at drawing, but I can do a little bit, enough to help you understand if this doesn't make any sense. Good luck and let me know how your projects turn out.

Charity,

I am not sure I understand about the snippets for a particular area. How do you define the areas?

When I go in on the other HGTV sites you gave I was able to actually view information and pictures of the person doing the project...I guess I don't get it....why can't I view it for the Snippet one?

Blessings,

I think that some of the older shows don't have the instructions like the newer ones do. And you will also find that on specials about a specific person and their work they will not reveal any 'instructions' because how they make their quilts is their livlihood.

As for the snippets. If you have a picture that has a large pasture, a sky and a few clouds...

You snip greens, browns maybe and perhaps a few red pink blue for flowers, until you fill the area that has that one color, the ground. Then grab your blues for the sky and snip until that is filled (unless you are just using a blue background piece, no blue needed for the sky). Then whites and pale blues etc for the clouds. The snippets don't "have" to completely cover the entire background it's your choice, but you snip different fabrics in different areas similar to taking a red crayon and coloring an apple. Does that make any more sense? I'm sorry if it doesn't, I could show you what I mean, but I don't have a digital camera and my drawing skills are horrendous. Please let me know if this still doesn't make sense and I will see if I can find someone with a digital camera and I will take some pictures.
