Another hurricane is on the way. I see where they are evaluating the Keys in Florida. They said it is headed the same as Katrina.

Another hurricane is on the way. I see where they are evaluating the Keys in Florida. They said it is headed the same as Katrina. Not quite the same direction they say though, looks as if it might hit LA & TX this time. I know they are worried about the strength it will pick up in the Gulf like Katrina. Worries me about all the LA evacuees in TX and now TX maybe getting a hit of their own. And looks like they are looking at New Orleans levees taking another side hit when they are already so weak. This is another bad hurricane year that is for sure. Keeping fingers crossed that it doesn't do any harm! Everyone keep safe! LauraM

I have been watching this hurricane. My daughter had to evaluate yesterday. She lives in a mobile home in Homestead. She said they closed all schools for today and maybe tomorrow. She said the worse thing happened yesterday, they got a new girl student from New Orleans, than told the kids that today would be a hurricane day. The poor little girl got very upset.

I can just imagine the metal stress that knowing another Hurricane is heading to where you have evacuated to can do on anyone. If Rita heads to Northern Texas, she will really put a strain on the Levees in New Orleans, the right side of a Hurricane always carries a big punch. They said that this season has already broken records for Hurricanes and it is not even close to being the end of the season!!!! I bet we do use Alpha, Beta, Omega as names before this season is over. |

Well hope everyone in Texas is keeping it safe & ready. Looks like this morning that Texas is the big target of hurricane Rita. The big hurricane guru said this one should be a match to Katrina in strength. It is sad to see them move the Katrina evacuees again, now to Arkansas & Tennessee, trying to get them out of this hurricane's way. According to the hurricane guru this year hurricane activity could be a match to a year in the 1930's when we had record hurricane activity.

I am in Texas, but not in the direct path of this hurricane. On our local news we are being told that this storm is now a category 4 storm and is headed for the Houston/Galveston area. That is sad because many evacuees from the last storm are in Houston and now they have to evacuate again! The mayor of Galveston has ordered evacuation and has made it clear that if people decide to ride out this storm, they will be doing so at their own risk. They are also predicting heavy rain in our area over the weekend, as a result of the hurricane in the Gulf. |

Have you seen the latest Atlantic Ocean Radar? It shows two, possibly three more Depressions out in the Atlantic that they are watching and another one coming off the Coast of Africa. Lets pray that these just stay out over open water and don't do anything more serious in the days to come. So far Hawaii is staying in the clear for any bad weather!!! I told my sister that it wan't a good idea to plan a trip to the Bahamas this time of year!!! But, did she listen.................. |

Some of our friends are planning to go on a cruise in Oct. They were supposed to leave from New Orleans but since Hurricane Katrina, it was changed to Galveston. Don't know what will happen now. Our relatives in Louisiana are heading here if Rita heads their way. That's at least 4 adults, a dog, and about 5 cats. |

Just have to vent on this a minute, please bear with me. I just saw on another forum where a Houston Police Officer was asking advise from people in FL that had been through a hurricane. He has an RV with a truck to tow it with. Here is is Thursday morning, and he is worried about his wife driving the truck and towing a fifth wheel for the first time ever, and alone and putting her on a freeway that is absolutely gridlocked. He said he didn't want his house and his RV distroyed by the winds of the hurricane. Now, don't you know that the Houston PD has been on alert since Rita left the FL keys and started marching towards Texas. Why in the world would he wait to get his wife to safety until 48 hours before this monster hits. I can't even believe he was thinking of putting his wife behind a wheel of a pickup with a 32 to 34 foot trailer behind it when she has never driven with the trailer attached. This man is thinking more about his truck and trailer than he is about his wife. Thanks, Sue |

One of my girlfriends has a summer home in Galveston. They left our city to go and empty their stuff from from their place. When they realized that this one was heading in thier direction they made calls to their insurance company to make sure that everything was in order for possible damage. Low and behold the policies that they have been paying for don't cover hurricaine damage. They are really upset about this and I can totally understand. There is also a huge hospital there in Galveston, it is a teaching school! These people need our prayers! Please keep these people in your prayers! mgf~ but feeling Blessings & Smiles

I'm with both of you. Men!!!!!! , and 60 miles is still not a safe zone. Not when they are calling for Oklahoma to be getting Level 1-2 force winds hitting them!!!!! Bet Ms RITA will be the first Level "6" Hurricane in history. Did you hear they are now calling for $5.00 a gallon for gas!!!! Better go today BEFORE she hits and fill up. |

Just thought I would give you guys some inside info. This morning on the radio (around 8 am) they said that people who left Houston at 3 this morning were still in Houston the traffic is so bad. It is also rumored that ther is no gas to be had in Houston. So we have all these people stuck in gridlock traffic burning gas that they may not be able to replace. There is a lot of worry that the hurricane will hit and people will still be in their cars trying to get here. Every hotel here in San Antonio is booked solid. Lines at the gas stations are out into the street. Many stations have run out of gas. They closed down the refineries this morning. Traffic on the major highways coming into San Antonio from the east is horrid. My guess is it just a constant line of cars from Houston to here. Bottled water is leaving Wal-mart by the cartful. Some places have even run out. I'll be hiding in my house all weekend hoping we don't get too much wind an rain from Rita and staying out of the way of all the evacuees. San Antonio traffic is bad enough when it is just us San Antonians here . Gina

I went to Walmart yesterday to pick up more supplies(when nerves kick in, you feel that you need to get more), and there was no water, no canned meats, no bread, very little juice, few batteries, etc. It was weird. We're staying put. We hadn't planned on evacuating, since we weren't in the mandatory evac zone. We figured that the people in the storm surge and flood zones should have first dibs on the highway. I'd rather be hiding out in my house than sweating in 100 degree heat, trapped on the highway. Some of my neighbours have left, but they have family or friends' homes to go to. Some have boarded up, others haven't...we haven't. One neighbour was really scared, so was boarding up and then planned to leave. He took a quick trip to the highway near here(not even one of the main evacuation routes) and was shocked to see that it may be a long time just to get on the secondary route. On the news we saw people getting out and pushing their cars to conserve gas. There are many cars on the side of the road because they overheated or ran out of gas. One guy left his car with his dog inside to get some oil...when he got back, his car was gone! Most of the gas stations are out of gas, and probably won't get more before the storm hits. A lot of stores, businesses are closing this evening, and won't be reopening until the storm passes...after all, their employees have to prepare their homes too. I admit that I am scared, but I feel we've made the right decision for us. We're expecting the winds to start tomorrow morning around 10, so even though the hurrican is not supposed to make landfall until late tomorrow night/early Saturday morning, we will probably lose power before it arrives. They still don't know exactly where it will land, so there is really no way to say who will bear the brunt of Rita. Good luck to everyone in her path. I think that everyone is taking this much more seriously because of the devastation of Katrina, which is good, and I hope that all of the preparation proves to be more than was needed, and everyone comes out of this one safe and sound. Take care,
Donna |

Donna, keep in touch with us when you can. Hoping for the best for you.... One of my SILs in La called today and said they are staying put. They talked about coming here, but decided today it was too risky to try and make the trip. They're afraid of being stranded on the interstate with no gas. She said the traffic even in La is awful right now. |

Stay safe, Donna! Please do keep in touch as soon as you can! We are still supposed to get some rain and winds here in Dallas from this storm, but it's not supposed to be as bad as originally predicted. Of course, that could change again overnight! Now it seems that east Texas will get more of the severe weather. However, we may get a lot of rain and power outages over the weekend. I went to Wal Mart today, thinking I would stock up on some things and also thinking it would be a slow day, but it was crazy! I met someone from Houston who had evacuated yesterday. They had talked to a friend who took about 15 hours to drive from Houston to Dallas. Now we're back to predictions of lots and lots of rain. I plan on staying in over the weekend since it seems we will be getting lots of rain. It is pretty flat around here so we may get some street flooding as well. |

We are just south of Shreveport, but they say we're probably going to get a tremendous amount of rain and bad weather. It scares me because of what happened in Miss. We have a lot of family and friends who have come up to this area. We are on the Texas border and all of the East Tx. schools have closed for evacuees as I speak. The stores here are nearly empty. No one knows what to expect, but to just be prepared for outages. We're not far from the Sabine River, but it is really low right now, so we're not in any danger of flooding from that. This area has had several tornadoes in the past, and that is what I worry about. Sending prayers for everyone, Shirley Clark |

Donna, I pray that you will be safe. I don't know what part of Houston you live in, but get ready for the wind. I hope you have boarded your windows..things flying around take out more windows than wind. More than the wind, the tornados are terrible. I DO mean to scare you...you still have time to get out. This storm is a monster. Houston may be spared the flood surge, but the winds and tornados will be terrible. Let us hear when you can get back on line after the storm, or if you do decide to leave, let us know. Sue |

Well, Houston dodged a major bullet. We just got our power back after about 9 hours. We were very lucky...some wind, a little rain, but no real damage in our area. Other areas of Houston got it a bit worse. Officials are asking people who evacuated to not come back yet since they need time to assess and fix the damage. Also, there is a problem getting gas here now, and they want to have enough for emergency personnel. Most schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday. As it turns out, the big story for Houston in the next little while will be the evacuation efforts and the problem encountered in that, than the hurricane itself. Hopefully there are big lessons learned there. We were lucky, but there are other areas of Texas and Louisiana that were really hard-hit. We are finding out about it now that we have power and can watch the news again. We saw some shots from Beaumont, TX, and Lake Charles, Louisiana...very frightening. The officials in Beaumont were saying it may take a month to restore all of the power. Take care,
Donna |

Thanks, ladies. We are all breathing a sigh of relief today. I feel sheepish saying that because I know that there are so many people who have serious property damage. I hope any losses are limited to property only. As many of you may have heard, there were fatalities as a result of the mass evacuation from Houston and area. For many, to leave or not to leave was a real dilemma. Take care,

This has been some really weird weather. Our power just came back on. It went off at 8:15 yesterday morning. We didn't suffer any property damage, but our whole town has been without power except about 20 houses. None of the businesses could run today, so no one could buy gasoline. They have it, just couldn't sell it. There were a lot of trees on power lines all around. We really didn't think we'd get power this quick. Even the people in the shelters had no electricity, but everyone did their best to see to their needs. The eye of the hurricane passed right over us. That was so strange being so far inland. It was downgraded to a tropical storm about an hour before it got here. It was pretty scary. I just can't imagine being in one full strength. Not my idea of fun. I haven't got to see any pictures yet, but I've heard the southern parts of LA and TX got a banging. I still haven't heard from some of my relatives. I hope they left.
