I made a fitted sheet by taking the measurements from an old fitted sheet. It turned out good.

Hi Asweetangel,
Welcome to Sew What News.
I am sorry I have never made a fitted sheet except for a crib, but I know you will get some great ideas here.

I am wondering if you use the directions for making a fitted crib sheet and use the measurements of your mattress if it'd work. I used the measurements to make a fitten sheet over a change table pad and it worked quite well.

Here is another article from the Joann.com website, from their sewing article archive. They should have a printer-friendly version if you want to print the instructions. I found it very useful for planning my new bedroom decor that I can sew myself. Hope this helps!

I have made fitted sheets as described in Sew Whats New and Joannes. The sheets I have purchased in the last 5 years are made differently with a diagonal seams across the top and bottom, rather than perpendicular at the corners. The elastic is more extensive as well. They seem to fit my deep mattresses better and the elastic lasts longer.I have some King Size sheets to make smaller and would like to try to make fitted sheets with the diagonal tops and bottoms. I have tried playing around with the king size sheets but just don't seem to be able to arrange them the same way. Anyone any ideas?

There are instructions for fitted sheets in the April/May 2002 issue of Threads Magazine. I'm not sure if the instructions are posted on their website, but it may be worth a try.

Good Luck.
