Well , the Christmas knittng is under way - two pairs of walking socks completed for my eldest daughter. I am knitting this( only just started - better get those needles smoking) http://freeknittingpatterns.lionbrand.com/patterns/kfw-aran.html in a man size for her fiancee, daughter 2 wants fair isle leg warmers in pink, Tony hates anything I knit so thats OK and I have decided this year I am going to sew tea cosies for my women friends. ( last year they all got hot water bottle covers... previously tote bags) It has become a bit of a joke what I will make this year....

What else are people up to?

(there is always the possibility of a dog jumper too..)
love and kisses, Jan

You sound ambitious Jan! I'm working on some quilts, also going to make pj's & matching pillow cases for the grandkids.

I haven't made up my mind just yet. That Aran sweater is a very ambitious project Jan. I couldn't make that up in ten yrs.

It is easier than the last one I did, the arms and back are all in a rib stitch so should make up quite quickly. Once I have knitted throughthe patterns once I am normally Ok and don't need to keep reading the pattern just keep track of the rows.

CHRISTMAS ???? I'm still working on Sept. birthday gifts. That is true but yes I have some plans for Christmas gifts. That is if the thunder storms, lightning & Hurricanes quit in time. Down here during rainy & Hurricane season we have to sew around all this stuff. Sure makes it rough to get things finished. At least it looks like Rita doesn't want to upset us either. Are having rain, thunder, lightning & wind gusts at times. I stayed up until after 2 A.M. this morning to finish a birthday gift to be mailed off.

Jan,

I have that same pattern. I also purchased the wool to make one for myself. Have I done it? Nope. Can't wait to see yours when finished. I've been working on a poncho to wear too work this fall. I'm almost finished with it. I haven't begun to work on Xmas projects yet. I was thinking of knitting socks for my daughters, the funky kind with the fur trim. They love socks that are unusual. I also might make them some felted purses. Haven't decided yet what to make everyone else in the family. :re:

The socks sound great Liz - go with the fur! they will love them. I really should get a web page up with piccies of my stuff..
I found the most fantastic 3D knitting pattern of a uterus complete with fallopian tubes and ovaries that I simply must make for my biologist daughter....

Jan,

I think that would definately be a conversation piece. Of course your talking about putting this on the front of a sweater for her to wear?

 Everyone sounds either well on their way with their projects, or are in the process. DH and I will be visiting our son in Texas for a couple of weeks, so won't start until late October .... just hope Rita doesn't do too much damage. In any event my projects are a two piece set from my youngest granddaughter (short dress with lace collar and sleeves with matching pants). Also planning on making a bear that sits up and has a blanket that rolls out from the feet for her to lie on to watch TV, etc. For the oldest granddaughter .. initial pillows for her new bedroom. Also a fleece vest. For the females in my family I knit dishclothes. We stopped giving gifts some years ago. But oh how I wish I could knit a sweater. I am also hoping to make a couple of hot dish carriers. Had to copy a pattern of a friends to make the first one. Turned out well.

:Canada: Enjoy each day while the sun shines to the fullest.

When I go to bed at night,I dont only say the usual prayers,I am
adding an attachment!! Please send me some elves that will do
crotchet, knitting, quilting and xstitch. I bake and can(jelly etc,)
and sew but thats it!
Anyone have some good sewing gift ideas? With my DH ill, I dont
have lots of time for big projects. The ones I do gifts for are the
young and old adults. :re:

Go to the sew whats new home page - there are some nice little things to make there under projects. You could always make hot water bottle covers - they are fun to jazz up! For children embellish with paws, ears etc, adults you could make fleecy ones.

I just finished a scarf, hat and mittens set for my daughter. She has such tiny hands that regular mittens do not fit her so I have to make pattern adjustments. My grand daughter needs a new set too, now that she is in school. ;)

I am hoping to get a wall quilt made for my sister in law, and some socks for my oldest nephew. I have yet to knit socks before so I am working on a "practice pair" now. Other than that.. I am racking my brains at what to make the rest of the family, that I haven't already done yet.
Don't be so open minded your brains fall out.

You will like socks, they are fun, but be very sure of your nephews foot size it is easy to get them wrong if your tension is just a little off. With men I find I have to cast on as loosely as possible otherwise they cannot get their feet throught the hole. Then again that might be my problem...I love making socks! Quick and satisfying.

Magot,
I am strictly a beginner knitter, but a teacher showed me a trick because I cast on too tightly..She had me put the 2 needles together and cast on that way, (both at same time) .. She said larger size needle would also work, but this way was easier.. It helped me.. You may already know this trick you are an experienced knitter, I know..Most complicated thing I ever knitted was a minature Christmas Stocking for a tree ornament..(being a lefty, caused problems there, but I figured out how to get around it)

I tend to use a two needle cast on but I beleieve you get a more elastic edge if you use the thumb method - I just never get the tail the right length before I start!

Libby just comfort yourself that if Da Vinci ever knitted tree ornaments he would have done it the same way..
I have nearly finished the back of Basils jumper - going faster than I thougnt. I like to do the back and sleeves first as then I have the smallest bit left to do (front) by the time I am feeling jaded!
