OK...I am making a costume for my husband for Halloween. It's his favorite holiday. I am using a Simplicity pattern 4450 http://www.simplicity.com/index.cfm?cat=4&type=19&sec=0&id=59&startrow=1 . If you click the picture of it, it will show you three different views of the costume and I am doing the one on the left. My problem is from what they call the 'shoulder armor' which is a shiny black in the picture. I was planning to use vinyl for it, so it has a leather look to it. I am supposed to cut out 8 of the pattern piece and use interfacing. I am afraid that the vinyl will be too thick to turn nicely with how they are suggesting it be done. I then thought about just turning the edges under, but if he moves quickly the backside will show and it will look awful. I also considered using a fusible web to fuse a simple black broadcloth to the back but then I realized I probably couldn't use an iron on vinyl. So, where do I go from here? I really want this costume to look good. Thanks in advance for the help, cause I know someone here will have a good suggestion.

hhhmmm....how to make a Sith look good...
I think you CAN iron vinyl as long as you don't let the iron come in contact with the fabric. (use a towel maybe)...how about fabric glue ??? you can glue the edges and put broad cloth on to cover the back of the vinyl the same way. (glue gun ???? I'm lost without my glue gun....) fake leather and a glue gun ??? fake suede and a glue gun ??? (or steam a seam) (if he doesn't want it to be shiny)

I'm not sure if that's what its called, but I've used a knit that has a leather look to it, and its washable. I call it feather leather. It's light weight but will give you the look your looking for.

Why don't you use pleather?? That is a shiny light viny and you'll have no problem turning that right side out.. Do like you wanted and use a broad cloth for the backing...

He doesn't want it to be shiny. We saw some pleather and it's not an option according to him. Thanks for the suggestion though. I may try the glue thing.

What about a fake suede cloth, I'm sure I've seen something like that which is quite light, or a very fine wale corduroy, velveteen, that type of thing?

Craft Foam Armor (http://entropyhouse.com/penwiper/costumes/helmsdeep.html)

Try the procedure described at the link above. I did this for my son's very complicated armor for an anime convention. The foam takes spray paint very well, is flexible and durable and very easy to cut with a craft knife. I imagine you could put a base of spray paint on, scrunch the foam up, flatten it out and put on a dark shoe polish for antiquing and then buff it to the shine level you want.

You might want to try the scrunching thing on a scrap first. I haven't done that.

Blessings and luck,
Barbara

I checked out the foam armor link and at first I was thinking that won't work, cause the armor for his costume is meant to be leather, not shiny or metallic. Then I saw the link at the bottom to another site and it showed briefly, enough that I can figure it out, how to make the foam look like leather. If I can find foam pieces that are big enough I will probably do that. I really like the effect and it seems really simple and inexpensive. Again, that's if I can find foam that's large enough for his shoulder armor. Thanks.
