Have you ever had one of those days, that when you get up in the morning, all you really want to do is sit down and sew? Well, that's me on every day off from work. Sadly, though, reality sets in and I know I HAVE to get some housework done. I hate doing laundry, and vacuuming is the farthest thing from my mind. However, no matter what else gets done in the house, there are 2 things that get done EVERY day without fail:

1) Make the bed! I can't stand for my bed to be unmade for more than 10 minutes after I get up. It drives me crazy on the weekends when I have to go to work and my other half gets to sleep in--I can't make up the bed before I leave!!! So, I get to make it up as soon as I get home from work!

2) All the dirty dishes get loaded in to the dishwasher before I go to bed. I just can't face dishes, even if it's only one glass, in the sink when I get up in the morning. I also don't want to leave them sitting there on the weekends for my guy to wake up to. I'm just silly like that :whacky:

What things do you just HAVE to do everyday that you're compulsive about in your home?

One day a few years ago I realized I was too busy and had to give up something in my life. I decided on housework. Works for me. Then I decided to give up work too and went freelance. Works for me lots of time to sew.
But then today I wanted to just sew all day and my editor was on the phone before I was out of the shower. I haven't started sewing yet.
I did, however, manage to pull a story out of the air and am, once again, "DaMan." After all these years I still get a kick out of making a tough deadline.

I can't stand to have ferrets toys/squeekies/plastic bags, etc...all over the living room floor. The ferrets have a toy box, but don't like to put their things away (like most kids) so I must do it....but after afternoon playtime, they're back out...::heavy sigh:: kids.... :dave:

I twitch if I don't go to bed with a clean kitchen sink - and when I leavethe house the cushions must be in the right place on the sofas.

shiny sink was hard when the girls were home, I would go to bed with it clean and come down in the morning to it dirty. Since they have both gone off to Uni it is like I lost a poltergeist - I go out in the morning and things are still there when I come home....uncanny.

Beds have to be made, couch cushion straightened, and the supper dishes always need to be in the diswasher the night before. I can't seem to sit and sew unless the house is straightened and my errands are done. Otherwise I feel guilty.

Well since I have this slipped disk in my back...I just can't seem to clean the house as often as I used to  . It's hard to pick heavy things up, you know...like the vacuum..and I can't bend over very well...so making the bed is wayyyyyy too much for me
(one day I might have to actually give up the helpless act....but not this week :re: )

I have to admit I'm pretty spoiled. My hubby cooks every night (unless we go out), plus he does his own laundry, and he does all the floors. I still haven't figured out what I do yet!

I have more important things to do than housework! BTW, those of you that have to have your beds made as soon as you get up, have you read the scientific reports that those beds have more mites (bedbugs) in them. Best reason I know of for not making a bed.

I'll take bed bugs anyday over dog fur....she likes to sleep on the bed if we're both gone from the house--ergo, the bed gets made pronto!! GreenLady, there is NO WAY I'm letting my man do his, or ANY, laundry-it comes out looking worse than when it went it! :bang: Nope, ain't gonna happen! LOL

Chrys, you need to teach those "kids" of yours to make the bed for you!!! Bet they would love playing on and UNDER the sheets!! I had two male cats that would help me make the bed all the time, they would get on the mattress and wait for me to put on the fitted sheet and then run around under it.
I'm sure that you could teach then how to run the sweeper too!!!!!!

I "TRY" to keep the house picked up, never said that it was dust free or spotless, but it is picked up. I can not stand to have mess anywhere, so what do I get DH & DS. I think that I am being punished for something. The only place that I can work with a mess IS in my sewing room, but the mess there doesn't last for long. I work better in organization instead of chaos.

Beds are supposed to be made?! I thought the purpose of duvet's was to make bed making unnecessary. Seriously, I have never made beds, unless I lived in a bed sitting room. Made too many fitted corners when hospital sheets were unfitted. My laundry room is in the basement and it takes me several days to do all the washing and drying as I forget I started to wash and dry.

I used to keep a pretty good house. Tidy if not clean. I worked pretty well most of my life and usually hired some help of some sort - so I could sew! One day, years ago, I realized the reason I did was for my mother and my husband and neither were there any more. One or the other of them usually made the bed in frustration when ever I lived with them. For awhile I kept things tidy to 'teach the children'. When they left home I realized I was the one who was the one who made the messes. Now, I only tidy and vaccum is when I think of moving and think I may lose some property value because my carpets aren't fluffed up. I 'declutter' every few days as I get a little confused. I wouldn't dream of having hardwood floors.

The 'children' did learn well. My daughter who was a messy little thing has a spotless house and washes all my dishes when she comes to visit from a long way away. (I figure the dishwasher water is hot enough to sterilize everything and a few specks of lint won't hurt me as it is mine). My son who was wonderfully tidy as a young man and the best vaccumer in the house (would lift up the piano to vaccum under it), is incredibly messy now and his partner makes me look like Martha Stewart. But in all our houses there are books on every flat surface and beside every chair - in mine covered with thread and fabric.

I have to have my kitchen counters wiped and clear. I have to have bathrooms clean and bed made. Table is clear and vacuuming done. My grandson does his own room, iffy but hey, he makes an effort. He makes sure his laundry is in the laundry room every day.

I am not a clean nut but there are certain things that HAVE to be done first.

I have really changed over the years, from neat freak to it will survive :bg: But I still go nuts about the kitchen, it has to be clean! I guess to me it has something to do with cooking & food products being in there, and just one of my little things. Other then that, laundry once a week, if the bed gets made it is because DH made it, I do push the vacuum twice a week, and have kids dust & do their bathroom, DH does our room & our bathroom ... hey I do all the cooking, grocery shopping, bill paying, and taxi service  And I'd always rather sew then do housework !

I only do housework when it absolutely HAS to be done.. I am not kidding..I do not let friends into my house, because it is too messy, and besides , my son's furniture is piled in on top of mine right now, besides all his clutter. (he is a worse pack rat than I am) I am allergic to housework.. I keep the kitchen and bathroom clean.. DSdoes his bathroom.. DS does all the cooking and grocery shopping.. I sew and do crafts and read.. Those are my household jobs since my retirement from the working world.. :bg: :bg: :bg:

I thought beds only got made when the sheets got changed! LOL. My daughter will come by and make mine daily if I let her. The sheets are cooler if you don't make the bed and it's hot here in Phoenix! Good excuse, huh? LOL

Well when I worked outside the home every day I had a very clean house. But now that DH and I are home all the time we tend to do what we want when we want and I do housework when it becomes to much for me to stand. I do clean the kitchen every day and the bathroom once a week at least and the laundry every few days. We live in Florida and DH golfs and showers twice a day. But on the days i get into something in the sewing room I just shut my eyes and pretend all the dust isn't flying around. I've gotten really good at ignoring. I only invite people over when I've had a good housekeeping week!

I'll trade with you! You can do my housework I'll do your cooking! I really love to cook, especially if you enjoy trying new things  My family likes to tease me about new recipes, I like to broaden their horizons :bg: Personally I would love to spend my days just cooking & sewing - give someone else all the housework :bg:

Don't like housework, am bored with cooking, I just want to sew and garden. I have a duvet which with one quick flip, tada, bed's made. I work shifts so I am only home a few days a week to cook supper and even that's a chore. As long as dishes are in the sink or at least the kitchen I'm happy with that. Eventually they get into the dishwasher. I have a great husband who helps out, though he does comment about the thread trails, the lack of a dining room table due to fabric and patterns and scissors all over it and occasionally the garden tools on the kitchen cupboard. I've learned to really label things well in the fridge so he doesn't eat/toss my seeds or bulbs!

putting the daffodils in the French Onion soup would be a real mistake!
I think the frustrating thing about cooking is you can spend ages making something and then 10 minuttes later the kitchen looks like the battle of the Somne.

Wow, I forgot about that little chore! I have to say that that cooking is actually a joint venture here. He cooks most of the meats, and I take care of the fixin's that go with it. Example: he'll grill the chicken while I'll make the mashed potatoes, gravy and hot veggie to go with it. One thing I do to make my kitchen duty go easier is to put everything away as I finish using it. Makes after dinner clean up go so much faster! LOL

housework (like like natural childbirth) is over-rated
however, the kitchen must be clean! and I splurge on a cleaning lady who comes every monday and does the whole place top to bottom while I am at work, I enjoy it for a whole 5 minutes till the kids come and mess it all up again
I'd rather... sew, bake, read, cook or play with the kids than clean! DH says I'm Martha without the cleaning part :bg:
