My favorite sewing shop lady told me today that Bernina Canada closed its doors permanently and will not be bringing anything in. All employees were laid off. Anyone else heard anything???

Did you ask Bernina ??? www.bernina.com has LOTS of Canadian listings for shops...
It sounds odd that a BIG machine company will no longer be in ONE country, but all the others around the world...
My dealer (Bernina/Janome) didn't say anything today I was in there for 2 hrs, she was selling a Bernina at the time...(of course I live in the U.S....but she always gives me the 'news')

How odd. Each country has it's own "Bernina". They operate as seperate and independant divisions. That is why sometimes when there is a problem, one country's Bernina will replace it for free, another won't do anything, and a third will charge...as in the case of the CD for the 200 machines. The US Bernina company fixed and then replaced all of those free of charge to the customer. Some of the customers from other countries didn't get that kind of service. I haven't heard anything about it anywhere but that certainly doesn't mean that it isn't true.

Laura, last night I went to a quilt shop in Ottawa that sells Bernina machines. I asked about what you had heard. Apparently it is only the distributor that is closing, not Bernina Canada. Their offices are still open but they are trying to find another company to distribute their machines. I was told that the current distributor is still doing the distribution until they find a replacement...but right now everything is very slow in arriving. The quilt shop has been waiting for their new machines for at least 3 weeks (and maybe even longer).

PS: the distributor is in Missasaguah (spelling??) ON.

Well, that's good to know. I will have to forward that on to my sewing lady. I would think with Bernina being such a huge company that they'd need a Canadian distributor!

eeeek, I was just in the bernina shop the other day and she demo'd the new 440 with stitch regulator for me, never mentioned any pullout.
Mary, there is a bernina dealer in Coldbrook just west of Kentville, Jeanne at "That Cottin' Pickin' Quilting Shop"
she has lots of toys there!!!

I saw the 440 being demoed to someone yesterday...it was reallllll nice. When I asked the price, I just turned and walked away. Too high for my blood.

There is member on the Martha Pullen site (Musicalmommy) that is upset that she order a Bernia from Quilters Cabin and put down a $2000 deposit. They took her money even though they new they were filing bankruptcy! She is having a terrrible time with Bernina. She attended the creditors hearing and the store gave her the embroidery unit but no dongle or machine, so that is worthless. Long story, if you are interested go to the site and scroll down to "The worth of a dongle". She is still out $1K and Bernina won't help.

For those that don't know, it was a Canadian Bernina dealer who filed bankruptcy on his privately owned business. She has written Bernina USA but they really don't have any ties with the Canadian complex. Each country has its own corporate offices and their policies vary by country. If I understand the story correctly, she also wrote the corporate Bernina Offices and Bernina of Canada. She paid cash for part of her down payment and used a credit card on the other thousand. She got the money from the credit card back from the credit card company but she is still out the out of pocket cash. The business owner did offer her a demo machine (as a new machine) but did not offer her a discount and did not explain. She was justly upset that they would demand full payment for a used machine. He also did not offer to refund her deposit. She was offered the machine the day before he filed his bankruptcy papers.

I don't have a stake in this and I don't want to get into how I "feel' about it, but it is only fair that those of you who read this (and don't read her letter) understand at least part of the facts. She has a lengthy letter about the unfortunate event which you can certainly read. There is no way on our part to know by the facts as she has presented them if the dealer ever even ordered the machine from Bernina or if Bernina ever received any type of payment from the dealer for a new machine. Since Bernina of Canada would have probably been one of the dealer's creditors, it is doubtful that they would have expected the bankruptcy. Since it is a legal matter, they may not even be allowed to discuss the situation, I really don't know.
