O. K. , I'll go first... Since I always read everything first, before I start.. I have a question on sashing.. The instructions look like you mean for us to sash every single 12 inch square.. Is this correct ? Are we supposed to "ruin" our beautiful family tree by putting sashing on each individual block??..I was thinking the sashing for the family tree set would have a little different measurement so as to 'frame' it in the middle.. Maybe that was not intended, but that is what I thought..?? Please clarify.. Signed.. Dum-Dum-LeapFrog Libby :bg: :bg:

Libby, for the sashing. You can sash each block if you wish or do long strips down and across. Now as for your tree block, this is four squares into one OR one large piece of fabric. Depending on how you place your blocks you will have the sashing on one side of the block next to the centre block so that you don't sash the tree block twice. Hope this helps.

ummm now I am confuddled again. How do we put a block that is like a four in one in the middle of a quilt of 12 blocks? Any chance of a diagram?

I will try to draw you a diagram here lol...four stars represent the middle blocks and the other eight around.

* The tree blocks
# The other 8 theme blocks
& Four blank corners or theme
if you made extra.

ahhh so a sneaky 4 more blocks nipped in there! That is going to require a bit more shirt sacrifice than I bargained for. Makes for a good usable size at the finish though. Thanks.

I have a very dark black with small white flowers I was going to use as the sashing (bearing in mind the nature of the rest of my blocks - fairly monochrome). Do you think that would work for the corners as well or would that be too heavy? Having no luck in finding any tree fabric I wondered if I could use that as the tree and help to tie it all in together. There is not a lot of embellishment on my blocks so simple and a limited palettte is y strong point.

Yes that fabric will do just fine for your tree. Using different textures I find interesting so I say go for it

The four corners can also be plain if you are using a print for sashing. The plain fabric can be signed by family members, hand prints, etc.

Yes - plain corner would work best for me, thanks. I'm not into embroidery much on my quilts but prefer to quilt some texture into it rather than tie it. I could do snowballs on the corners - then it wouldn't look as stark.
One last point - do we make the central block bigger to allow for the fact that there will not be sashing in the central portion? Otherwise I can't visualise how the rows would fit together
eg top row finished width would be 57" (3x3"sashing + 4x12"blocks)
and the next row 54" (2x3"sashing +2x12" blocks +1x24" block)

Similar problems occur on the length of the piece. If you made the central block 3" bigger in both dimentions it would fit with keeping the sashing the same width. Either that or there is a lot of sashing adjustment to do.

Or I am missing something really obvious.

Thanks teach

Hi, no the centre block is the right size with or without sashing. Lay out all your blocks on the floor, bathtub, where ever lol now if you have cut a piece of sashing for ie 3" wide the length of the fabric, lay it down between the blocks. Do the same for width on all the blocks. No matter what way your cut blocks, place them, sashing always fits to the way of your cutting.

Magot,
I intend to use my blocks we have created only.. 3 across top row, row 2 and 3, tree block and 1 regular block on right side of it , and then bottom row will be 3 across.. I have been looking at lots of prize winning quilts, and I see a lot of them with the different shaped block on the left side toward the top or middle, sort of like a feature.. I think that tree is an absolutely gorgeous creation.. Joanne, You outdid yourself on that creation.. I found 2 pieces of fabric for my tree and now I cannot decide which one to use.. I may have to make 2 of that block to see which I want in my finished quilt...Oh, darn, more work.. LOL..

Thanks guys, I was getting too tied up over it I guess. I'll make my tree and then slob all over my design wall (kitchen floor) until I find what 'fits' me - October half term is coming up and I can look to having a clear few days to play without work getting in the way. I can aways ake the snowball blocks to match anyway and if I decide not to use them then can make a matching cushion.

Just thought that I would start up the conversation on this block. Last night I did trace the tree onto the wonder-under. I cut it out and now I'm ready to press it onto the bark fabric and then cut. I'll try to get that done tonight. My problem is deciding what material to use for my "background" fabric on the block. I also havent' decided on just cutting one large block or the 4 blocks to sew together.

How far is everyone on this block? What are you doing? (Besides out to recess and playing hide & seek).

Haven't started mine yet-partly because I only just found fabric I like for the bark and I don't know what I want to use for the background either. What are other people doing?

I have yet to check through my stock of shirt shreds to see if I have enought o do it in one colour - I would like to - but I may do the bottom two greenish and the top two blueish as a sort of background.
My trees will be made of flowers - haven't found bark anywhere. I reckon it will be OK though.

I still haven't done my August block yet  so haven't looked into the September one yet. I hope to do August's this weekend if I find the time. :bluesmile I will probably do just one large block for September. Before I actually start on it, I'll do what Joanne suggested, place all the blocks on my design wall (...actually my floor) to get an idea how I want to arrange the blocks! Then I hope to get it started.

You may want to use just a plain color to match your quilt as the tree and all the names will keep it very busy. Can add a little grass at the bottom though.

Not big on embellishment as you may have noticed Joanne, so I was going to leave all the names off.

I was able to work on mine this past weekend. I decided to do 4 blocks for the background block. I have them all sewn and have been playing with the placement of the tree. Then I will work on the names for the tree. I haven't decided yet as how far to go back with the family? I'm thinking of my husband 's and myself great-grandparents? What is everyone else doing?

Joann are you still here or is it that time for your surgery?

Haven't even cut mine out yet but not sure I'm doing names on the tree either. I'm making one for my daughter-in-law and I find I get into the problem of who do you put on it-my son's side or her side or both, just immediate or grandparents and further, etc. Maybe inspiration will hit when I get to putting the tree together!

I'd like to hear what everyone else has decided to do to.

What kind of background did anyone use?

I have cut mine out this afternoon and am about to sew it all together. I have gone for a cream background and a black and white gingham tree - this will make sense if you look at my other blocks in the album (under Janice or Janice H I think). The tree I have cut out is not too large so I will be doing some free motion embroidery to extend the branches into twiggy things.

Time to get the machine out!

How about putting on leaves and leaving them blank...then they can be filled in by the owner as wanted...the pressure will be off you for what names to put....and names put in by owner...would be fun for them to do...using pigma pen...and extra leaves maybe for future heirs..?....

My sashing is nearly complete - I had to do maths to get it to fit properly - I have done 4 extra snowball blocks for the corners and placed the tree in the middle of the quilt as a large motif. My tree ended up at 24 inches x 24 inches so the sashing in the middle is 41/2 inches around the tree in order to take up the excess. I am hoping to have enough fabric to do some more borders around the blocks to bulk it out a bit. I like borders that tie in with the keynote fabrics in the piecing. Carefully and/or adventurous use of sashing can really lift a quilt and tie it together.
