I want to quilt with this machine & I cannot figure out if the feed dogs drop or if there is a plate that goes over them. Can someone answer my question, please? I ordered and bought a manual from sewconsult.com & they only sent me 16 pages and did not have the information I needed. The manual should be around 32 pages so I now ordered another one from Sears, which I should have done in the first place. :bang: Judi

Hi and welcome to Sew Whats New. :bluesmile What would it hurt to just lower your feed dogs and go for it?

Thats the problem I have. I don't know how to lower them. I have torn the machine upside down & now I am wondering if there is a plate that goes over them. Can't wait until I get my next manual. Judi

Is '385' the whole model number? I have a Kenmore with model number starting with '385', but has several digits after that.
Anyway, on my machine, there is a sliding control 'hidden away' on the back of the free arm towards the bottom that enables me to drop the feed dogs. Pushing it one way drops the feed dogs, and sliding it back the other way and then turning the handwheel towards you, raises the feed dogs once again.
Take care,
Donna

Thanks Donna, but I looked and there is a knotch out of there, but nothing to move. The model is 385.1960180, it must be close to yours. Can't wait until I get the manual! I am making a quilted sweatshirt jacket and I am getting close to quilting it. Judi

I responded to this in another section several days ago. I read somewhere that if you couldn't lower the feed dogs you could cover them with masking tape or duct tape. If I did this, I would clean the feed dogs after with a little alcohol. I can't recall which tips column I read this on. Good luck.

If you push into the notched area will the area behind it move to one side or another - perhaps the indicator has fallen off? I would try this with my ever useful nut picker (have one in every room in the house!) or blunted awl to see if anything moves.

Thanks Nancy, I tried there is nothing there. Feel so foolish, can't wait to get the manual to find out how to do it. I am going to try the tape for now. Happy sewing! Judi :monkey:

I was told by a sales person that the 385 beginning numbers on Kenmores means that Janome is the manufacturer. Check on the back side of your free arm underneath and see if the lever to lower the feed dogs is there..thats where it is on my Kenmore.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions, but just recieved my new manual from Sears & found that there is a cover that goes over the feed dogs for quilting & darning! Now, back to the machine! Judi  :bolt:
