Okay this is one of those question that pop up every now and then. But I like it.
You find a purse/wallet, do you return it with everything still in it? You find a wad of money (either in a clip, rolled with a rubber band, just a wad) do you go to the police with it? You find a briefcase full of money, what do you do? You find a trunk full of money, what do you do? You find a bag (like the ones used by armor trucks) what do you do with it?

I turn everything in...it's not mine. I don't own it, I have no right to it.
I even turned in a cell phone I found in a restaruant bathroom once. (and yes I did wash my hands... :nervous: )
I was taught to stay out of peoples yards, not to touch what wasn't mine, say please and thank you...I was taught right from wrong and manners.
(unlike some people these days....and I can say, it makes me sick, some of these mannerless, idiots are my neighbors)

A purse, wallet, briefcase, bag or large wad of money would be turned in. A loose bill would not. If I found a $10 or $20 on the ground I can't see taking it to the police. I doubt anyone would go looking for it. If it was in something, I would because then there is an actual chance of someone identifying it. And if was in a large roll rubberbanded or money clipped it could still be identified. Anyway, I have always tried to be honest, I work in a convinient store and constantly hand back extra money that a person handed me without realizing it. I do it without thinking.

I'd try to return it -- take it to the police.
Of course we are all going to say that. It's the right thing to do. Faced with a situation, perhaps some of us might not.

I'd take it to the police - size doesn't matter. If I kept it I'd feel I was stealing. If you try to take the odd fiver to a policestation they get very confused...I have handed in all sorts of purses. I once found 2 scotty dogs in my garden that were obviously lost - but the police refused to take them - they did say that if the owner got in cntact they would point him my way. Fortunately he came round some 2 hours later as by now my cat was having conniptions. The dogs bought me a big bunch of flowers the next day! The poor man was so cross as he had just spent £400 on dog proofing his garden and they ran out the front door as he was paying the man.

Once when out for a walk with my lovely man I was climbing a tree ('natch) when I found the muzzle of a gun along the trunk.
"Ther is a gun up here," I said
"Don't be silly" he said
"Take this " I said, and passed him the air rifle. (.22 calibre) I didn't want to leave this on a rriverrside walk used by many children. I guessed it was hidden by some teen whose parents didn't know that they had it..
Anyway, we took it to the local police station. Now the only way to get into Cambridge police station is via what appears to be a back door. We very carefully cracked OPEN the gun and went into the station and up to the sargeant on reception. In aproximately 15 seconds I found myself surrounded by 4 Very Large Policemen.

"Hello, Miss, what have you got there, then?"
"I'm handing this in as lost property" I said, "I found it up a tree"
"A what?" said the stunned policeman
"Salix caprea " I said."It was a Goat Willow"

I gave him the gun. I made a statement.
3 months later they gave it back to me as no one had claimed it and I sold it for £20

Like Jayde - I would tend to keep loose paper or metal coins - someone handed me a found coin at my foot yesterday and said it was good luck.

I seem to misplace a lot of things (usually turn up sometime) and if they are of value or needed I get very unpleasant feelings. I would hate to think that I couldn't relieve another person's feelings by returning what I found. I am not really a do gooder, it is just the way I feel about people. Like the tiny, tiny diamond ring I found on a chain. The diamond was sooo small but a diamond is a diamond to someone and usually has significance. It wasn't something the police would probably have kept or dealt with. I advertized in the newspaper, and was disappointed at the people who phoned who were obviously looking for something of value that wasn't theirs as they couldn't identify it. Eventually, after several years, I gave it to goodwill.

I've kept a $10 or $20 that I've found on the ground, but I'd have to turn in anything else like a wallet, or lost property or even a large amount of cash. My conscience would make me crazy. I too have corrected a store employee who gave me back too much change. Been in that situation and had it taken out of my paycheque and that hurts. I try to live by 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you'.

Jan - what the heck were you doing climbing up a tree??? What a gal!

What else are trees for? My husband says it's like taking a dog for a walk, he has to call me to heel every now and then. They were very easy to climb....

I've returned purses left in grocery carts in the parking lots, wallets found, advertised about dogs & cats that found their way to my yard & an expensive diamond watch found in the sand on the beach. If it isn't mine I don't keep it. I will pick up coins on a parking lot. If I see someone drop money & not notice it ( men are bad about dragging bills out of their pockets ), I'll tell them they dropped their money. I've returned kids toys that were left in a shopping cart also. I too was taught never take anything that doesn't belong to you. I believe that what goes around comes around. Our home was broken into years ago not long after my mom passed away. I was given her jewerly in a velvet bag & rest in her jewerly box. I tucked it away & couldn't bear to go through it yet. Yep, it was stolen along with our jewerly & etc. I didn't get all our stuff back but did get most of mom's. Even the velvet bag. We've taught our children the same things & they have taught it to their children. A long time ago the bank gave me $20.00 too much & I told the woman about it. She said no, I don't make mistakes & got upset when I counted it back to her. She kept insisting she didn't make a mistake. I gave her my name & phone # & told her I'd expect her call when she counted her drawer that evening & came up $20.00 short. Yes, she called me & I took it down to her. Was called crazy by some but It wasn't mine. I sure could have used that 20. at that time too.

I guess I'm like many of you! I was taught that if it isn't and/or wasn't yours then it is stealing, even if you found it. I have also given change back when they have given me too much, returned lost/dropped toys, money, anything that wasn't mine was either given back, dropped at a lost/found, reported, etc. Since we live in the country, animals dropped around here aren't usually lost but abandoned  I really believe what goes around comes around, and every good deed is returned. I once lost my wallet, and although it was missing $10 everything else was there, really I was happy! If money is going to drop in my lap I'd like it to come from the lotto :bg:

I would definitely give it back. I have to be able to sleep at night and look myself in the mirror.

A sad thing I find at school is the adage "finders keepers, losers weepers" is taken as law. Many is the time I have had to dispute between a child who says "So and so has got my pen" to discover that So and so insists it is theirs - they found it on the floor 2 minutes ago and therefore it is theirs. Or they found it in the playground. Sometimes the only way is to ask who they were with when they bought it - the honest one is usually able to say something like "My Mum got it in Tesco's" without thinking whereas the "finder" will have to think about it!
They do not believe me when I say that keeping something that does not belong to you without permission is stealing. How much of this is parental taught? Do you regard the pen from work as 'perks - everybody does it" or stealing.

I don't care where a person is at, if it isn't yours then it's stealing. That includes the work place. It also drives up the cost of the business & that's passed on to the consumers. I get so upset with people that take grocery carts & never return them to the store. You see kids playing with them & carts along the side of a road. The last time I had to order some , that was in 1993, each one cost $300.00. Taking anything that doesn't belong to you is wrong. I am like Mary, I want to sleep at night & also be able to look at myself in the mirror & not be ashame. I too feel that what goes around, comes around.

I agree that it should be returned. I think most of the older generations - and I mean most who are adults - have been taught this through the years.
Jan, referring to your comment about school, I have experienced the same thing in my 5th grade classroom. If they find it on the floor, they claim it as theirs, when they didn't own it 5 min. before. When they say, "I found it" I always reply, "but you knew it wasn't yours to begin with." I was giving out candy one day, and when I turned my back one of my kids went to my candy box and took another piece and hid it under her backpack - with the other kids watching. I'm thinking - if she'd do that in front of everyone, what does she take when no one is looking?
Not everyone is honest and would look on the lost wallet as an opportunity to make a little money. I couldn't live with myself, and I know I have taught my own kids the same values. Not everybody feels like that in this day and age.

Hurts doesn't it Shirley? I came across a survey the other day that people asken thought that 60 or 70% of the 10 commandments were no longer relevant to todays society. Makes you wonder which ones are still in effect? Murder I think is still classed as a no go area ( so long as you are not talking abortion - another story)covetesneess, idolitry, adultury - all negotiable.

You know I would like to say yes I would do as all of you do. I think I would for I am not the type to want something that does not belong to me, but to say 100% I would turn in a wad of money, I can't. A wallet or purse of course no doubt in my mind, but a wad of money rolled in a rubberband, I say yes I would but not 100%, 99% says yes but there is that 1% that says maybe.
