Good morning from the land of Oz! I'm a newbie here, just found you all this morning. Alot of seasoned sewers here, maybe you can help, I'm not having much luck finding dark brown fold over braid to trim a new jacket pattern. Joann's had nothing, Hancock's had black or white braid only, and so far not much luck on internet sites. I was wondering if I couldn't use a thinner weight of polar fleece to bind the pockets and edges. Anyone tried this? Or would it stretch to bits beyond using? I'm open! |

If it is too stretchy try backing it with a little non woven interfacing. Dorothy |

Hi Linda, Welcome to SWN! I would think you could probably use the light weight fleece if you stabilize it first. Haven't used it that way before though. give it a try on a scrap and see how it works out. Or how about making some bias binding out of matching jacket fabric?

I need to go out and buy a computer desk! I am using a very small table at the moment and I wouldn't be posting at all except that I got my new flat monitor yesterday afternoon and Jon set it up for me. It takes up so little room, compared to my old one! I think you could easily use a piece of lighter weight fabric for your taping, and put backing on it if necessary...that was an excellent suggestion. Also, you could use almost any fabric you wanted for the bias tape and get some very nice effects. Good luck! If anyone is wondering, my Chemex coffeepot is set up with its warmer plate and my electric water-boiling pot in one corner of my bathroom...with coffee, filters, cups; instant coffee and cookies alongside. Did you check the home dec department? That is where I would expect to find what I am picturing (rather than with the finer laces and trims.)

Did you try Walmart? Our Walmart has way better trims than our Fabricland does. What about other home dec stores? (good suggestion Pam as always!)And welcome to the site!

I have used the fleece to bind the edges and have not interfaced it, also you might want to think about swim suit material for binding. Quite a few garaments have that as a binding and I'm pretty sure I have seen it pre-cut in some fabric stores for that purpose. |

I found a great piece of blue lurex lycra fabric in a remnants box at Fabricland not long ago. I cut it into strips and used it to bind a blue fleece vest. I have used swim suit fabric in the past but somehow they are limited in colours and brighter than I like. For a brown jacket how about looking through glamor fabrics, which I believe my remant came from? Knits tend to be quite wide and you wouldn't need a lot. How about a nice copper colour? Cut twice the width of the binding you desire and use the jacket fabric as lining to the binding. eg. 1/2, 1, or 2" seam. Sew in on from the front, right sides together, pulling the binding slightly as you sew which causes the fabric to curl around to the wrong side. Tack, then ditch in the ditch on the front. Couldn't be an easierway to bind! Of course a great deal depends on what fabric the jacket is, the effect desired, and if it is lined (I would bind 1st). *~*~*~* Nancy*~*~*~* " I try to take one day at a time - but sometimes several days attack me at once."

Thanks everyone for all the ideas! The jacket fabric looks like boucle, but is finer and several shades of tan, brown, and small shots of teal. The pattern used a contrasting trim which I think would set this off very well. I'm going to check out the Home Dec section tomorrow, and use dark brown fleece if I don't find anything. It's a Peggy Sagers 'Silhouettes' pattern, # 1750 (Robin's Jacket), and unlined with princess seaming. Already pin fitted the tissue and made the adjustments at the (ahem) hip, (what a betrayal!). I've avoided jackets for years, didn't want all the fitting hassles, but I'm ready now. I'll post a picture with help from my daughter. I've avoided computers, too! |
