What is your favourite interfacing (woven, nonwoven, fusible or non) and why?

I like the knit iron on for most things. If I want something heavy I like a woven iron on or non woven sew in. I don't like that inexpensive non woven iron on. It comes loose with every wash, bubbles, stretches the fabric.
I nearly always apply the sew-in interfacing before cutting out a pattern piece.

I agree 100% with Dorothy. I also buy my interfacing in about 10-12 yard lengths (when it is on sale). I bolt it, label it and use as needed. Like elastic, I have learned that when I buy a lot a save a lot. I just cut everything on grain but very close together. I don't have a lot of left over pieces when I finish my 10-12 yard length. I just hate having little pieces of "stuff" left over that can't be used without putting pieces together. Since I have discovered the knit interfacing, I use it a lot! I had always used the sewn in interfacing. My very favorite of all time is the old fashioned cotton organza which is what we used when I started sewing but it is almost impossible to find anymore and it sure costs a lot more than it used to if you can find it!

I have been thinking about buying significant yardage of interfacing, too. I found some online not too ong ago, and I was tempted by the free shipping. I wasn't up on my pricing though, so I was afraid to take the plunge. When putting together supplies for a project, it would be nice if there were just one item that I could skip, and say, "Nah, I always have plenty of that at home." Can/do you use the knitted fusible on woven fabrics?

One of the fabric store owners here recommended the knit iron on interfacing, he said that he uses almost nothing else. So I took his advice and bought a couple of yards and it's totally great. Knits, wovens, whatever. I'm really happy with it. My MIL got me using used fabric softener sheets for interfacing small areas, like cuffs, or under button holes, and it seems to work fine as well.

I like the fusible iron-on interfacings. I've only used it on 2 occaisions, but it worked really well. Since I'm still in the beginning stages of sewing, I haven't tried any others, but the advise here is great and I'll keep everyone's suggestions in mind for future sewing adventures.

I'm also in love with knit fusibles and buy it in large batches. I have white, ivory and black on hand at all times and some woven and nonwoven for stiffer things too.

I use the knit fusible on the inside of t-shirts and sweat shirts as one of the stablizers for embroidery designs also. In fact, while I'm posting I'll ask this question. I bought woven suede on sale to make a 3 piece suit for winter, will the fusible knit work as a good interfacing for the jacket facings and collar? If not the fusible knit would the french fuse interfacing be good to use with this fabric?

I also prefer the knit fusibles. I've used it several times for adult garments and loved it! However, since I've been sewing mostly for children lately, I've bought the fusible interfacing in packages. Once I move, I'm going to try to keep some of the knit fusible on hand, though. I love the way it provides support, but is still flexible and soft in the garment.

Patsy,
I always do a test of fusible to any kind of suede or suedelike fabrics. (include washability, if its supposed to be).. And watch the iron temperature very closely..

I needed to make a tuxedo jacket (with tail) for a drum major uniform a couple years ago. The material that matched the band uniforms best was a light weight knit jersey with glitter (all over). I used the tricot knit fusible interfacing on the back of all of the jacket pieces. I made it stiff enough to be a great jacket. The collars of the jackets turned well and the weight was wonderful without loosing it's stretch! They turned out very well and wore well throughout the marching season.

I have never used the knit interfacing other than on knit type fabrics but it sounds like I'm going to have to try it out!

I saw a poster / advertisement for a double sided iron on interfacing in the fabric store yesterday. I didn't have time to check it out but it said that it was great for lined items like purses (which I've sewn a number of) and the theory sounds great. Has anyone tried it? Any good?

Jeanette, where do you buy your knit fusible in batches? Up until now I have had questionable luck with Fabricville's assortment.

Patsy, I think the French Fuse is good for any type of fabric, it's excellent quality. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Is this the stuff that everyone is so happy with? fusi-knit tricot (http://www.joann.com/catalog.jhtml?CATID=82284&PRODID=60081&source=search) You have to buy it by the bolt, but at this price, with a 50% off promo, it would come to $1.30American per yard plus shipping. Is this a good price, or a better price than the stores? It looks like all of you live very far away from me!! I was hoping to split an order!

THat sounds like it. I sometimes buy it in widths about 22 inches wide and it costs around 2.69 a yard (American). If I buy it in 60 inch width it is about 5.98 a yard. I prefer the 60 because I can get so much out of it. I usually buy at least 10 yards at a time.
