I have a lot of king size sheets and now have a queen bed. Do you think it is worth it to try and alter the fitted bottom sheet? I am not exactually sure how to go about it. I thought it would be easy until I put it on the bed and tried to figure out what to do. Nancy

With the price of sheets, sure would be worth a try! The length should be okay, just the width. Turn the sheet inside out and put on the bed, one side fitted to the corners. On the other side, pull it into the corners, pinning to form a dart the width of the mattress. After stitching down this dart, you can add elastic to the bottom edge to help keep in place. If it doesn't work, you haven't really lost anything, but should be an easy fix. Good luck! Martha www.mar-csinteriors.com Martha

Hi. New poster here. I saw your question and thought I'd add my 2 cents for what its worth. I would just sew a seam the whole way down thru the center of your sheet taking out the amount you don't need. If you press the center seam, you'll have a nice sharp edge to go by. (I know, ironing's a pain) I've made full size sheets into queen by cutting down thru the center and then adding a panel. Works out nicely. Beats putting out the money for new. Pam |

Making queen sheets from a full by adding a panel in the middle would be fine. But.. I wouldn't make a seam down the middle to cut down a king to a queen size. You wouln't want to sleep on a seam. I'd take as much as I needed from each side as close to the sides as possible. Put the sheet on the bed wrong side up, pin it on either side to where it fit like I wanted. Sew the seams & cut out the excess & make what I think is called a flat fell seam so it wouldn't ravel & be neat. That way you wouldn't be sleeping on a seam. That leaves marks on you & hurts. When I was a kid ( a million years ago ) my mom would repair some of our sheets. She never put a seam down the middle for that reason. Make it just like a quilt backing if your material isn't wide enough. Just my idea about this. |
