When rag quilting do you backstitch at the benining and end? I did that and once you start sewing the rows together the corners got all tangled up and it was hard to clip them loose so there wasn't a gap.

If you don't backstitch at the beging and end then it just pulls apart?

Are there any websites that have patterns and instructions for rag quilting?

Does anyone have pics of some they have done?

Thank you,
Melinda

Okay I haven't made a rag quilt yet, although on my to-do list  I know on my other quilt directions it always said never to back stitch on the blocks, so wouldn't think you would on the rag either. If you feel you don't want them to pull apart try doing a very short stitch at the begining an end of the block for a few stitches. Now that is just my opinion! In garment sewing that is what we use instead of back stitching when we don't want something to pull out & we don't want to back stitch in an area. It has been a couple of years since I made a quilt, and can't remember if I had a problem with my blocks :bluesmile

I have made two rag quilts and didn't backstitch my blocks. I made sure the seams intersected when sewing the rows together. No problem falling apart. Just make sure when you snip, that you do not cut any of the stitching.

Post pics when finished. My pics are in my picture album below under quilts.

You have made some really nice stuff. I should have been taking pics all along because most of the stuff I make leaves the house and I never see it again. Goes up north to grands! I'll have to dust off the digital camera and get busy before I send it all away. I've made some quilt tops but got stuck with the quilting and backing of them and didn't finish. Now I have a bin full of stuff that needs finishing. I don't know any quilters here and haven't tried to do them on my own. I just bought a new serger and will be takng some classes for that and hopefully I'll learn other things while there. I see beautiful quilts in their shop.
Great photo album.

Thank you for the nice compliments DebSews. Yes, by all means get that camera out and start taking pictures of what you make. One of my daughters actually purchased a quilting journal book for me. I'm now happily filling it out with notes about the quilts I've made. Such as who it was made for, date it was completed and of course a couple of pictures. I'm thinking about doing a journal with other sewing/craft projects. I like making things for people and give them away for presents. You also can sign up for one of the free photo web sites and share your creations with others.

Thank you for the links to the rag quilt sites. That is way more links than I found when I searched Yahoo.

I appreciate everyone's help. I can't wait to get started.

I couldn't see the pictures in the photo album though.

FYI - I used Google to find the sites for the rag quilts. I can usually find what I want with that search site. Glad they were of help.

First off thank you Judy for the web sites..

I have made rag quilts, rag bags.. I even made a "baby's rag bag". which I might add is great for a shower gift.

It is a diaper bag that when it is opened is a rag type blanket to change the baby on... It is wonderful

I hope this works...

go to books:

Rag bags , there is a picture of it on the right lower corner.

I have made a RAG jacket.. mistakes are never noticed and it is quick and easy.
Have fun!!!
