Have any of you tried these patterns? I picked up #5554 to work on as a gift for a little girl. bassinet and layette (http://simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=5554) I really wondered if it would be worth it, b/c I'm not quite a dummy, nor quite a beginner. Well, last night I sat down and read over the instructions. I was really impressed. Layout and instructions are provided in pretty standard style, but then, for the sake of the beginner, they provide additional pointers that spell things out in non-jargon terms--all that stuff that only some people are lucky enough to know from growing up around sewing. The pattern looks like a fun one. I'm going to do the doll's bassinet, blanket and pillow. I'll probably run out of time before the girl's birthday, so I will save the other items in the ensemble for another occasion. I have a hunch it will be a popular gift.

I am new to sewing (I've only been sewing about 3 years), and I love Simplicity's Sewing for Dummies. I have several patterns, and one they don't make any more  !! They were one piece pants for kids. I love them for my little one to make for jammies. If you ask me, and you did, Sewing for Dummies is my favorite pattern to sew by. :bluesmile

The Sewing for Dummies patterns have some wonderful window treatment patterns. I bought a couple and learned how to make my own cafe curtains free hand with their directions. None of the windows in my apartment fit any of the pre-measured standards on the package. I was able to learn how to properly measure the windows and followed the directions for the curtains after cutting out the fabric. They are really nice for us late bloomers!

GOOD. That's the way you should do them. But one way or another, we've all got to learn the techniques.

I agree that I was surprised at the patterns. I picked up one for #3 dd because I like the pj pattern, and it was a plus size, which isn't the biggest selection for kiddos anyway. Really loved the one-seam capri pants, the directions were easy, the little cami top cute too! I did make a little modifications because I could  but I thought overall these are great little patterns no matter what your skill level

I've done a whole lot today with the bassinett pattern I was referring to. It is coming out sooo nicely! This little girl is going to love it. My own daughter is begging me for one. It was going to be a surprise, but her tender little heart just might break before her December birthday! What's even better is I only needed to buy the interfacing and eyelet trim. I cut it out of fabrics that I bought years back and never used.

Two of the Sewing for Dummies patterns that I love are #5964 for placemats and table runners, and #5854 for fleece blankets and throws. I wasn't able to get the links for these to post, and the Simplicity website doesn't show all the SFD patterns that are available. Andrea, you've chosen an adorable pattern-I can see why your DD would want you to make that for her too!! :bg:
