My sewing room is about 14x18 with windows in the end wall. There is also a fireplace in the middle of one long wall. The windows are at the south end, so it gets lots of light. I'd like the machines to be down at that end but I don't know if I put them facing the windows, or do I have the light behind me or do I face the fireplace wall and get the light at the side. Nothing else will be in the room as far as furniture unless I leave a loveseat at the back with a small tv. What do you think works best??

I have my sewing machine facing the window because I like to glance outside every now and then and I get the light from the window. I don't get sun in that window tho- which I would not want the sunlight blinding me or glaring.

Actually I put my machines so that the light hits the SIDES. Full light in the face while you're sewing could give you a headache. If you put the light at your back, you won't see well enough. So ALL of my machines are sideways to the one small window in the room I use to sew in. ( I've aways sewn like that...cause I'm 'blind' :bg: )

My sewing machine faces the wall with the one window at the side, the serger is facing the window but I don't get direct sunlight in the window. I also spend more time at the sewing machine than at the serger. My view of the house beside us isn't the greatest so I wouldn't want to face that way!
I have a magnifying lamp that is positioned over the machine. That gives me as much light as I need. I'm blind also!

My favorite position was when the south window was to my left. I always kept the shades open so I could see the birds and wildlife in the yard and it was wonderful. However, the sunlight did turn my serger which was closest to the window yellow. We do not smoke but it is about the color you might expect a serger to be if it had come from a smoking family. (I think it was still worth it just to have a wonderful atmostphere to sew.)

My sewing machine is in the window but I don't get the sun directly in the face. My serger used to be right beside it but a couple days ago I rearranged so the serger is set so the window is now over my right shoulder. I can just spin in the chair from one to the other or another way to the edge of my ironing table with a cutting board on it. All four tasks with a spin of the chair.
I definitely need more light in here though. It was fine with one lamp through the summer but I have to get another lamp soon.

I envy those of you that have an actual room that you can call a sewing room. My sewing "room" is a corner of the kitchen, where you're supposed to put a table and chairs for eating. I do have a nice large desk that is my sewing table, plus a collapsable cutting table. The kitchen window is across the room from me to the left, and I have a view of the trees in our backyard and the neighbors', but it doesn't get direct sunlight. My architech's lamp that my other half bought for me supplies the added light that I need.

Thanks! I was wondering if facing the window was going to make it too glarey from the sun and being from the PNW, that's only in the summer :bluesmile .
You have given me some really helpful ideas.

I have a nice setup in my sewing room but because the room also has other uses I am unable to put my sewing cabinet at the window where I would like it. I would love to just take a break and look out now and then... Oh, and you have a fireplace in your sewing room? How chic!
