Can anyone tell me what the difference between a Brother pe-270d and a brother se-270d? Also are either of these machines good for a newbie? Or would you suggest a different machine. Thanks for any input you may have.

Hi! I'm brand new on this list as of today and am looking forward to participating.

It's my understanding that Brother and Babylock machines are made by the same company. I even saw an ad online for a Brother semi commercial embroidery machine that gave the Babylock equivilant number in parenthesis.

I have a Babylock Elegante that is a combination great sewing machine and good embroidery machine. It accepts floppies, has a memory stick, and a USB connection. My machine sits only a few feet from my computer, so I stick with the USB. It does a good job with the embroidery. 2 drawbacks for me is that you have to remove the embroidery frame to put in a new bobbin, and that you have the embroidery thread every time the design changes color. I used to have a Babylock EMP6 (semi commercial) that has 6 needles and holds six colors at a time. You can program in which color is for which spool and in which order to choose the colors for a given design. I sold it because I was having so many problems. Looking back, though, the real problem was lack of dealership knowledge of the machine. I really miss the EMP6 and its many, many features. If I had the money to get another one, I would. Either machine is highly suitable for a beginner.

Hope this helps.

Shouka,

Basically the se-270d is a machine that does utility stitching and embroidery.

The pe-270d does only embroidery.

If you wish to see details of both machines go to www.brothersews.com under "Machines & Software" click on "embroidery". On the upper right click tab "complete product list". You will see pictures of the machines you are curious about with descriptions if you click on the picture.
