Okay, three questions.

I plan on making a costume (not exactly for haloween but for something else- so Im just getting an early start **** not for haloween) Haha. My point clear.

1.Anywas I want to make a poofy dress that happens to be short, at most knee length. I cant find any patterns. Does anyone know of any patterns or what I can do?

2. Since Im making it a cow poofy dress (the costume is going to be a cow) Im having trouble finding a good cow print. The one I saw looks like a freaking dalmation. and it makes me sad. So I was wondering if I got white material is there any kind of paint I can use to make spots on it? or something... if anything at all.

3. When looking at patterns yesterday I overheard a girl tell her mother they had a pattern for making tights. I get the feeling it might have something to do other than with sewing. But none the less does anyone know of such a pattern?

Go and look at patterns. The books have a costume section. As for the fabric use fabric paint.

If you make a straight lining and a wide cover it will poof. (How many remember the dresses that were made this way?) Anyway, the larger the diameter of the top portion, the more poof you can have. You can achieve this with a very large tube or you can do something circular. The top and bottom of the outside can be gathered to the tube lining. The top portion will have to be longer than the lining so that it will have room to stand away from the body, otherwise it will just cling and you'll have a gathered top piece against a straight piece. I'm sure that with a minimum of experimentation you can come up with a good formula. I'd just make a "small version" (like a doll's dress), out of scraps to get a good proportion and then enlarge it to full adult size using the same proportions. Also, to make it stand out you may want to use netting as an interlining on the outside (larger) piece.

I did this type of thing for Halloween when I was in high school but I didn't line it. I just put elastic on the top and bottom. I was a pumpkin and I filled it with balloons to make it stand out. We went to a nursing home and the residents kept poking the costume to try and figure out what was in it. I finally gave up and gave away my balloons. The residents were thrilled. However, my solution would not be a good one for a long-range idea. I also had to wait until I got to the "home" before I could fill my costume.

I'd go for the fabric paint as well and it should not run if it gets wet. I would think the pattern for tights may be for knitting cause I've never seen a pattern for sewing them. You can buy tights in all sorts of colors and sizes or you could substitute long johns if it happens to be a male person wearing the costume and he's hesitant to wear tights! This sounds like a totally hilarious costume - love to see pics when its done!

Pam -- You could have used helium in your balloons and been a flying pumpkin.

The costumes for a animecon. I would be more than happy to show you when its done.

btw Ive already looked at the haloween costume patterns. All the poofy dresses I've found happened to be long. > .> Ive only made one skirt before so I dont feel I can alter the costume pattern.

Thankyou for the directions on how to make one. If I still have no luck finding any patterns Ill try it out.

Oh, and Im fully aware there are tights that come in all colors : D I have a love of them and I just thought it would be cool to make my own one time. But oh well, I guess the tights I have are going to have to do.

The pumkin costume sounds real funny : ) It was nice to hear the story.

Dang. One more question. For the fabric paint should I paint the spots on the material before or after I make the dress?

I would paint the spots on before I cut it out.

I would lay the pattern pieces down and then figure out where the spots would look best. Having spent all the time painting, then find out it isn't where it would be the best would make me mad.
Myself when I had to make an animal print and had to do it myself in painting the fabric I assembled the costume, then with a fabric marker I painted on the spots and stripes. Then I knew where they would look best to make it look a little more real looking. I didn't put any of the finshing touches in as in elastic, or buttons, but I knew where these were going and imagined how it would look gathered.

Patterns for tights, Green Pepper (http://www.thegreenpepper.com/index.html), has a pattern for tights, but it isn't a complete foot tight, but think you could do it! I have seen other post that make and/or alter them for kids, they just serge the toe seam. Would be an experiment! :whacky:

As for paint, does any one watch Trading Spaces? Frank on there often uses regular latex paint to paint fabric. He mentioned the fact - have you ever painted then tried to wash the stuff out? I haven't tried it yet, but am going to on some home decor for the kids room! Just wondering if it is a costume if it wouldn't be cheaper then buy allot of fabric paint for spots.
