I am new to this sight and it is terrific loads of good information, I make halloween costumes every year and this year I am stumped, I also sew throughout the year. One dress is a beautiful gown and the other is like a shirt dress. The gown is where I am lost it has a gown and a fitted bodice. I purchased two patterns for my neices and thought that I could downsize an adult 10 to fit a girl size 12. Any ideas? Is is terribly complicated, and by the way I am not a beginner by any stretch I just want these costumes to fit well. They wear them for years as dress up. |

Just thinking here! Assuming you have and/or can get measurements for something similar in the girls' size 12. I would check the differences as to where you are going to have to adjust and/or grade. The shoulder length, where is the waist to locate, the armhole circumference, neck depth. My thinking that the bodice is the area that you are going to be altering/grading the most. Are you going to rotate the dart completely out? Here is a girls size 12 standard measurements per my pattern designing book (remember these are body measurements, no ease): Height 55 1/2 - 57 1/2, Weight 75 -84 lbs, Head Circum 21 3/4", Bust/Chest 33", Waist 27", Hip 33", Center Front Length to waist 11 3/8", Center Back Length to waist 12 1/2", Front Shoulder Slope 13 5/8", Back Shoulder Slope 13 1/8", Shoulder Length 4 1/2", Waist to knee 21 1/4", Waist to ankle 36 5/8" Not sure if I'm any help, but not sure what you are working on as far as design lines. Well, Krayon, you could start by cutting out the pattern pieces and pinning them together with a 5/8 "seam" allowance. Have your nieces get into their undershirts and step carefully into the paper half-outfit. Remind them to be still and to look straight ahead (tv?), not down. Then you can adjust your pin positions until everything looks just right. Keep those pins in place and cut your fabric 5/8 bigger than those pin marks!

I don't know if this would work for downsizing, but it has worked for me when wanting one larger. At the copy center, I enlarged it a percentage to get the measurements I needed. The bodice was a little longer than I wanted, but I just took that amount off the bottom and the rest fit fine. Pat |
