Just starting a new thread to throw in and discuss future block swap ideas if people are interested in doing one --- after the holidays, that is!

One idea I had in mind is called "Winter Blues" - all the fabrics are in whites and blues.

that would be cool-I love blue also. Other options might be any block but all one color with varying shades (like Mary's quilt challenge). I'm up for almost anything!

Lyn- that's an idea! I like that! Would you want the swap all be one colour or people choose their own colour as long as it is ONE colour (but can use variety of shades)?

Well, there's a question for you, huh? I'm good either way-think it would be interesting, don't you? I also like the blue and white idea-sort of along the same lines. How many more ideas can we come up with? Bet we could do several during the year!

Helo ladies,
This is the first time I've looked at this thread... and it sounds GREAT! Every quilt I've ever done has been shades of blue, blue and white, blue and yellow or blue,white and yellow! So blue or blue and white sounds wonderful to me.
How do you do your swaps? Do you decide on the size of the block and the theme and then whatever one wants to do is fine as far as design goes? I'd really like to get in on this. And since it is after the holidays that is even better because I really have more irons in the fire than I can pull out right now!

Doing a quilting block swap is fairly easy. People submit ideas or whatever ... as far as being a hostess - I would recommend asking MaryW (owner/mod of this forum) about it ...

A hostess generally set up a thread listing the guidelines for the swap ... then we have a sign up period where people sign up for the swap --- that determines how many blocks we have to make. We generally do a 12.5" unfinished block (most common size) and usually give it a month or so to do it. Some people sign up for two blocks but most sign up for one. All blocks are sent to the hostess (if this is a centralized block swap) then the hostess swaps all of the blocks and send them out.

This past year we did a signature block swap and now we are finished with Christmas block swap - we were very liberal with this --- they picked their own block and fabric and anything goes ... for the Christmas block swap -- they did whatever they wanted as long as it included holiday fabrics. I think this is great because of the freedom and a very generous great group to work with.

Anyone can be a hostess - it doesn't have to be me ... I just did it as I enjoy it and wanted this block swap :)

Okay, I am in for this one Brenda

I like the idea of blues and whites, but also like the idea of shades of blue.
But if I had to pick, I'd go with blues and whites.
But you know me, I will go along with the majority, bc I think it will be another great swap~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I still just sit and awe over my christmas blocks!!!

I am going to embroider the sashings with everyone's name and where they are from on them under each block~~~ I think that will be cool~~~ Because 10 yrs from now, I will not rememeber where each block came from, and this way, I will always have it with the quilt.

Sending this thread on to several of my other buddies, sure don't want them to miss out on this one!!

~~~~~~~~~~~THANK YOU BRENDA FOR DOING THIS~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okla - you are sweet.
Another idea is pick a block pattern (that is reasonably easy for all stages of quilters: beginner to advanced) and you choose your own colours or have a colour set theme for it.
How about we all do the same block but pick two colors that we would do it in. Example, maybe I would do it in yellow and blue, someone else might pick white and green, etc.
Do you ever do them with a specific pattern (other than holiday) fabric? Like frogs, kids, pink flowers or something along those lines? Just an idea.
I think the blue one sounds really neat. I'll have to try to get in on it. Thank goodness it's after the first of the year! :re:
Had an idea .... I was in another swap similar to this --- Mystery sampler swap --- swappers would send an email to the hostess with their info (mailing, etc) and also the block name that they will do for the swap. The idea is to have a quilt without having duplicate blocks (pattern). The hostess would let the swapper know if that was okay or if that was not okay the block they choose ... it would be first come first serve. That way, you will have a real sampler quilt :)
Many people get their ideas/inspirations from Quiler's Cache or Quilter Bus (as well as never ending links).
I really like the idea of the blue/white swap (Winter blues) - the idea would be to use only blues and whites.
Hello Everyone,
I just got my activation code and enjoying all the talk. Not sure if anyone has ever done a round robin? I am a certifiable CQ nut, and at the moment involved with an RR for a Fairy Tale CQ block. But I would be really interested in any swap or RR. Not sure of the rules thou, as I am new to the fourm and not sure if I am allowed to join.
Thanks and have a super day!
Hey I am participating in a block swap and I thought this would be perfect and FAST ...
We are going to be doing an Amish 9 patch block swap ... where you use a colour with black. Only this time, I was thinking maybe doing it in flannels? We could try to round up as many different colours as possible - the brighter the better ... solids would be great or tone on tones would be great ... what do you guys think?
Good question I didn't think about that ... I haven't gone to Joann's in a while so I don't know what they have nowdays. I love things that looks like Amishy .. and with winter being here (except to those Southerner gals and their warm weather) --- might help WARM us up northerners!
Okay --- can't find the poll for this one so I will ask you to pick what you'd like to do in 2006 as 2006's first quilting swap. I know some holidays are coming up such as Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day so that's an idea ... anyway, here are the ideas that I've compiled based on your posts. Let me know if I missed anything. What are you all interested in doing (or more importantly, what are you interested in doing FIRST) :)
1. Winter Blues (BOB, BOW, WOB, and/or WOW)
2. 2 colour block (specific two different colours/fabrics)
3. Mystery sampler swap (you tell the hostess what block you will make and each block you get back will not be the same)
4. Amish 9 patch block (black and colours - everyone will use one colour so there's no duplicates)
5. Flannel block (creating a block using only flannel fabrics)
6. Round Robin (a person creates a center block, then sending off to next person on the list who will make a border and there on)
7. Themed fabric block (the group decides on a theme and we use blocks based on the theme ie: Christmas)
8. One block in 2 colours (each person will pick 2 colours to create the same block the group decides on)
9. One block and anything goes (everyone creates the same block using whatever fabrics you want to do).
Just reading the msgs re block exchange and wondering if it got off the ground...if not, I'd like to join in, too. I think a quilt with all star blocks is cool and I've never done one yet with diff stars patterns. Our local quilt shop displayed a star block for each state using the state flower print in each. Really beautiful! I don't know if it ever got put together and quilted but the ind. blocks were gorgeous!
Sorry, but I won't be taking part in this one. Still haven't put the other two swaps together and I have joined two BOMs at my local quilt shop and they will be finishing in June so will have those to complete as well...and still have the SWN Advent quilt to finish...so just too many quilt UFOs to begin another one.
But will give my suggestions anyways...the Modified Union block has too many small HSTs pieces and includes sewing bias triangles on the centre pieces which may make it difficult for beginners to get the right sizes to match up the pieces. The others are good ones. It would make a great quilt if everyone would use the same colour for the background colour for the block, e.g. everyone uses a white or everyone uses a cream.
Will still follow along to see everyone's input and will look for the pics to see what I missed! :wink: Good swapping everyone.
Glad you liked it! It is easy looks like to me too.
We don't have to use this one. I just put the link here as a suggestion , whatever the host of this decides will be fine with me! It this Brenda?
If Brenda is the host of this, ladies you will be treated well! I have been in her swaps before and she is very sweet, stays in contact with her people and gets things done on time! Very important for a hostess I think.
Happy Easter today to everyone!
Thanks for the kind words ... I like that scrappy stars ...
I am hoping to see if we can get a poll in and see how many heads (or sewing machines) we can get going for a swap.
