I am making a sleeper for my GD and it uses a 14 in zipper down the front. My question is how to get it in when all the seams are sewn first. I always have trouble with zippers but this one seems to be especially hard. Am I missing something? The pattern is an old one I've had for a while Simplicity 8493. Any suggestions? |

Have you already assembled the sleeper? I was thinking my way through a similar construction recently, and thinking, Gee, why don't I install the zipper first, and then unzip it and complete the assembly? I haven't done it yet, but I think I have a skirt pattern that says to do the same.

Well I went by the instructions and put the whole thing together. Would I do the inner leg seams first? Then do the shoulder seams and sleeves? I'm just not getting a picture of when to do the zipper. I'm sure tomorrow this will seem easier but right now it doesn't. |

Oh, I see. I was picturing one of those ones that's just a sack with arms and zips up to the collar. Your pattern is for one with a zipper down the leg? stumped. sorry.

No it just zips down the front to the crotch. Does that help? |

I usually install the zipper in the front before I do any other piece. Once the zipper is installed, I do the other pieces and turn everything through the zipper. There is one type of zipper that wouldn't give you much trouble right now though. Try an invisible zipper. They can be installed from the wrong side of the garment in the seam allowance with a regular zipper foot. They don't have to be top stitched. This might be the easiest way to handle it. You might be able to install a regular zipper in the same manner without a top stitch...the teeth would show but it would work. If you use a regular zipper, when you open and turn it, you can top stitch down each side with the zipper open so it won't curl.
