Hi! I taught a sewing class today, which included a tutorial on making a quilted pot holder. Click here (http://kelly.hogaboom.org/tutorials/making_a_quilted_potholder.pdf) to download my instructions. Any feedback is appreciated!

The class went well. I had ONE freakin' student! Doy!

Oh well, I only advertised for 6 days, and the store didn't do the advertising I thought they would.

I have another class scheduled as a two-part - Nov. 12th and 19th. Hope to get the word out better this time.

VERY interested in advice about giving classes...

Thank you all for the compliments. Corrections or suggestions are appreciated.

I am putting together a sewing binder full of instructions and tips (mine and ones obtained elsewhere) that are helpful.

Hi Blackie - the project looks like a great choice for a beginner: small, practical and you get to learn several things - rotary cutting, quilting, mitered binding...

Just a couple of suggestions you might want to consider -

Under the materials section - may want to include the items Rotary Cutter/Mat/Ruler. Unless the materials only reflects what the student needs to purchase/bring and the cutting tools are provided in the class. Also - you may want to provide suggested fabrics (eg. cotton broadcloth prints or flannel). I know that choice is always overwhelming when you're a beginner :bluesmile .

In the quilting section, you may want to show a picture / explain what 'ties' are, if the student isn't familiar with quilting.

Overall - the instructions are great incliuding the pictures! Thanks for sharing.

Oh - one other thought. For the quilting part, you may want to mention the use of a walking foot if it's machine quilted. Depending on what type of machine the student has - i think some machines (Pfaff?) have built-in differential feed which prevent the problem but lower-end machines ( :bluesmile ) like mine don't.

Yes, I provided the cutter/mat, etc. I also provided materials (cut the squares and binding strips). But you are right, a brief discussion on materials is vital. Actually, in a couple minutes I'm going to post a query about class teaching - I am teaching a Beginner Sewing class in a few weeks.

In the quilting section, you may want to show a picture / explain what 'ties' are, if the student isn't familiar with quilting.

You're right! Thank you.

For the quilting part, you may want to mention the use of a walking foot if it's machine quilted.

Thank you! I will be sure to mention the walking foot. Wish I had one to demonstrate! :-)

Thank you very much for all your comments, and welcome to the site!
