Hello to all

I am trying to figure out the correct way to install top and bottom zipper stops. I am using YKK Vislon # 10 continous tape zipper. I have to cut the zipper tape to the desired length then install the slider and finally the zipper stops. If anyone knows of the proper way or procedure to install the stops, I would really appreciate it!

Thank you

Mike from Ontario

I've used commercial zippers by the yard but I didn't need the stops...sorry. Hopefully this will pull your post back up to the top and someone else can help you. You might look for a site for the mfg company and see if they have any information on these zippers.

I've checked all the sewing books I have and the only info I got was to do bar tacks at the top and bottom. I hope someone has an answer.

That's what I always do on my commercial zippers by the yard. It is also the recommended thing to do with zippers that are shortened, at the top and bottom. However, if you catch it in the seam, you don't need to do the top and when I sew across the bottom, I don't do it there either. I thought the zippers that were being sold in the store had stops though. I've noticed that the stops and repair kits have "hit" the wall at Hancocks (at last). The thing is that I haven't purchased those zippers yet so I don't know what is included in the package so if I failed to answer your question, that is why.

My DM (rest her thrifty soul) would say , "If a bar tack will work, why spend money on a gadget you do not need?".. I have always just placed bar tacks there and never had a problem.. My machine does a great bar tack.. Love my Janome..

Setting the top stops is a cinch, literally. Just align the stop in place, holding it in place with a pair of needle nose pliers, then squeeze. Try it on a scrap piece of ribbon first if you fret.

oh, and if you need to shorten the zipper from the top -iow- removing zipper teeth to solve your problem, take the needle nose pliers and pull them off, one by one. Sure, you'll need to get a good grip on them and give a good tug but even the metal ones come off like that.

same as above, with one difference...

I purchased a pair of end-cut pliers from the local hardware store for about $6 and I use that for removing zipper teeth. Warning: wear eye protection because those little suckers can really fly, and be careful to only nip off the zipper tooth and not cut the zipper tape.

hope this helps
