Hi! I'm wondering what the difference is between the quilter's flannel and the other flannels such as the Snuggle or Cozy. It seems that the quilter's flannel is woven more densely and I'm wondering if anyone has used it for other things besides quilts..such as PJ bottoms. The Snuggle flannel seems to pill after being washed and the colors fade out quickly so I'm looking for another type of flannel to use. Any ideas/ suggestions/ info would be appreciated. TIA ~Becky |

Hi Becky, I made a pj bottoms from quilter's flannel, and they were really nice and cozy. I chose it because of the print...I didn't realize that there was a difference in the cotton flannels. Take care,

There are different qualities of flannel. Some are very tightly woven and the yarns are dyed. Others are of a looser weave with the print is applied to the top of the fabric. I am not familiar with those names but if it were me, I would judge the quality by the feel and appearance. Then use it for whatever I needed it for.

I think if it's a difference in quality you're after, you might try a different store. Lol. This weekend I picked up some quilter's flannel after examining the same brands that you named, Becky. I think we shop at the same chain In the end, I think the only difference was that they used a more sophisticated design. The others were more juvenile. I pre-washed it and it is already beginning to look pilly and there are little spaces between some of the threads. It looks, well, old! At my other (favorite) store, I think the quilter's flannels will be somewhat denser and possibly less drapey than other flannels that might be better for a flannel shirt. I think they do fine for PJ's, although the bolt label will still have the disclaimer about how they don't treat with a fire retardent and so they're not meant for sleepwear.

Thanks for the replies, ladies! I wish we had a better options in fabric stores in my area, so I'm limited with where I can get the flannel without driving too far. I agree about 'going by the feel'....that's what I'll do for the next couple pairs I make and see how they turn out. The patterns on the quilters flannel are less 'juvenile', I agree...the quilter's flannel I just made my son's pj's out of have cheetah heads on it....they turned out nice....he's a 'big bad Marine' (lol) due to come back from Iraq in December so I'm trying to build up a stash of civilian pj's for him! Thanks again for the in put. ~Becky |

Militarymom, You can get swatches of flannel and other fabrics on many web sites, lots with no shipping. I pay a dollar for a swatch on denverfabrics and it is well worth it to see the quality before buying. They also ship within a couple of das. My fabric choices are limited to walmart and joannes, one too cheap and one too pricey! Good luck!! |

Thanks for your prayers, Andrea....very much appreciated ! Patti...that's a great idea to get the swatches...I'll have to check out that website. You have the same choices I do for buying fabric...Walmart and Joann's! And our local Joann's is soooo small! |
