Ladies:

I'm venturing into new territory here and need your help. My wife has expressed some interest in a used Janome 10001, and I'm considering getting it for her. I've searched your site and found some information this machine, but would like more thoughts on this machine, questions I should ask about a used machine, and what would be a reasonable price range.

To give you some background. My wife is an avid quilter. She has a number of machines now (Brother 6000, Brother 1500PQ for her Little Gracie, Singer Featherweight) She has an entry level embroidery machine (Brother 150) and wants something more advanced and that can embroider a larger area.

I appreciate your advice.

Thanks

I own a 10000 (upgraded to the 10001). Sewing fields for her will be 2x2,
4x4, 5x7, and giga 9x10. She can use flashcards, regular cards, CDs (through USB cable from her computer) 1200 designs per folder on flash cards. She'll need a reader/writer for the flash cards ( I have a cheap $20 Memorex one)
She'll have built-in embroidery and fonts, plus she can add TO THE MACHINE through the USB cable. The 10001 uses ONLY a jef. format. She'll need conversion software if she wants to use other formats. I use BuzzXplore.
I think the machine should come with Customizer. Maybe NOT Digitizer ( I have no idea how the new 10001's were packaged) Customizer will allow her to put embroidery on her machine, re-size. (NO format conversion)
If she wants to Digitize, she'll need Digitizer (which is new this year and turned PRO, but she'll need the 10000 version on the computer for the new PRO to install to).
She'll be able to free motion quilt, there are special quilting buttons. It makes auto button holes. Comes with a knee lift. I don't know what hoops you'll get. (mine came with the 4x4 and the 5x7, I had to buy the others).
New I got mine (from my fav dealer....) for about $5000. but it came with extras...(350 spools of RA thread and a holder for them all).
I don't know what used ones are running. I kept my 10000, bought the new 11000. I also have the 300E (embroidery only), 6500 Pro Quilter and the Compulock (serger).
I'd say $3-4 thousand might not be out of range for the 10001. (used Janomes are in HIGH demand...my dealer SELDOM has one and she's been a dealer for 30 yrs)
I'm sure someone will be along to add what I've missed... (it's midnight here and I'm tired....) :re:

I have the same machine Chrys does--10000 upgraded to 1001--and love it! I think she covered just about everything! I actually got my 1000 for a bit cheaper since they had just come out with the 10001. I think I got mine new for about $3200 and it also came with some extras like a box of Janome embroidery thread, and I think the Customizer 10000 came with it also, as well as 2 hoops--I had to purchase the Giga hoop and the 2x2 hoop.

I can't think of anything else to add to what Chrys has already told you, other than this is a great machine. I've had 2 Janomes and have been very happy with both.

Janome's are super machines. I have the 9000 & 10000 updated to the 10001. No problems with either one ever. Just regular cleaning. Also have the compulock serger & another Janome serger. Also 3 old wonderful metal Singers. The girls above just about covered what the Janomes do. I don't think you'll go wrong with one.

It would be wise to check with your local dealer before purchasing any used Electronic machine. Bear in mind that you will have no warranty and your first repair could cost you almost as much as you paid for the machine. Another thing to consider is that with todays complex machines you will want to make sure you have a dealer willing to help you with the machine. Without dealer support don't waste your money just buy a basic machine.
Have fun or don't do it, Tom
