I have 45 inch wide material and need to join it to make 90 inch width for the backing of a quilt.....can you use the salvage edge as a seamline guide or should it be ripped down (say half an inch from the salvage) the length to create a seamline guide?

Myself, I would cut the selvages off. They are sometimes very densely woven. It is difficult to stitch thru and they sometimes shrink at a different rate than the rest of the fabric.

definitely take them off, they will make your seam buckle after it is washed, even it is washed already. but don't rip, cut , ripping will make the fabric wavy for an inch that is unusable on both sides.
