I am a new member as of yesterday, even though I have been learning from all of you for some time now. I have been inspired to get out my machines and start sewing again. I am the mom of a 9yob and 7yog. We are homeschoolers. I own a Baby Lock 400 and a Singer 6234. My question is this: My son is a huge NASCAR fan and his favorite driver is #17 Matt Kenseth. He wants to be a race car driver for halloween. I am thinking of using a sweat suit since it is short notice. How would you all embellish a sweat suit to look like a race car driver suit? Also, does anyone else on the board live in NW Louisiana? Thank you for letting me join and post.

Hi and welcome to Sew Whats New.

How to embellish, hmm. Lots of stripes. I think the drivers have badges on their suits too, don't they? Maybe some Nascar motifs. What does everyone else think?

'Driving' gloves, helmet or cap, checkered flag, several sponsor-type appliques(oil companies, tire companies, etc). Don't forget the number and last name of the driver. Perhaps you can sew a strip of checkered fabric or ribbon down the sides of the sweat suit.
Take care,

I don't really have any ideas for your costume Mommyof2 but I did want to welcome you to the boards! Hope you hang around and let us get to know you!

It'd be really cool if you could find a sweatshirt with a zipper down the front...or just split and add one. It would also be easier to embelish with the shirt open. I'm with everyone else, I'd add lots of stripes, maybe a stylized yolk of a satin fabric over the shoulders. You could probably get away with twill tape or maybe bias tape for the stripes. If you embroider or know someone who does, you could probably add the sponsor's patches on the shirt too. You might want to see what that driver wears and see how close you can get it. I've done a lot of pretty detailed halloween costumes that called for the embellishments to be made from felt. The felt is very easy to handle and you can get a lot of trim out of 1/2 a yard.

By the way, welcome aboard! We look forward to hearing from you!!!

find out his sponsors & you could design & print iron ons or stickers on your computer. I did this for my son a few yrs. ago. his Dad has heavy equipment magazines so we cut decals from that & sewed on the paper labels. It lasted through halloween.

And he needs to have his face all dusty except for racoon eyes - so he looks like he just took off his goggles!! Your idea sounds great, will love to see a picture with him all done up!! And don't they wear calf high boots?? Do you have a pair of rubbers you could duct tape silver?? I love doing costumes, they are so much fun to create

Welcome Mommyof2, This is a good place to get help with your sewing when you have run out of ideas. The help the other gals gave was everything I thought of too. I made a Yoda outfit for my Grandson Gabe, 1 year old. The ears are what made the whole outfit. I just made a loose robe with a hood, on which the ears were attached. You didn't have much time to work on your costume. How did it turn out?

My two boys are huge Nascar fans also, Though their driver is Dale Jr. The evidence is in their bed room. I made, curtains and a comforter. Oh yeah and painted the walls red. What part of NW Lousiana do you live? I live in Texarkana, Texas, so we are pretty close. Welcome to the site these women are wonderful!!

Well ladies, I am sorry to admit that it didn't get to finish it since I was so short on time. We had thunderstorms the entire day and into the night so we didn't get to go trick or treating at all! I did promise him that I would still go ahead and continue to work on it so he could have it to wear when he's riding his bike. He wants to send off for iron on patches of the real sponsors so it will really look official. I don't have a camera to take pictures yet. I am hoping Santa will bring me one. MissKittyDillian, I live in Webster Parish. I am about 45 minutes from Shreveport, LA. Thank you all for your support and generous help. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!
