I am attempting to attach piping to a stand-up collar. What adjustments will I need to make to ensure a nice finish? I'm having difficulty when I turn the collar to finish the neckline seam. Does this make any sense to anyone? :nc:

Are you trimming carefully? That's a lot of fabric in that seam where the piping is. I find that after I've turned it, I have to baste it close to the piping -- I don't get as good a finished collar just with ironing.

Does that help?

Where the piping goes around the corner cut notches in it after you have it sewed in so it can over lap where it bends, also trim fairly close after.Sew really close to the piping when you put the top layer of the collar on. Use your exsisting seam for a marker when putting on the top layer.

Trim and slash are very important, but when you trim, do it in layers so that each is a little shorter than the other. That way when you press, you won't have sharp lines where the trimed seam is. I prefer for the longest layer to be toward the outside. That rather protects the garment from having a "step" look. Any time you have multiple layers to trim or your fabric is thick, you need to trim in layers.
