I made a few of these 3 years ago. I want to make enough for my Christmas tree this year, but I can't find my pattern. I think the pattern was in the Love of Quilting magazine in Nov/Dec 2002. Wouldn't you know the magazine I need right now is the one I can't find. I gave away all but one of my ornaments and I'm thinking about taking it apart to get the pattern, but I don't want to if I can find another pattern like it somewhere. Has anyone seen a free cathedral window ornament pattern on the net anywhere? I found a pattern for a cathedral window quilt, but not for the ornaments. |

Bama, I gave all my ornaments away, but I seem to remember that it takes 3 to make an ornament.. With a little bit of stuffing.. My Squares were 2 inches square, I remember that much. (picture squares, that is; the other for the window part was 9 inches , I think) Don't take my word for the measurements, though.. I'm kinda fuzzy on this.. Sew With Love

Thanks ladies. A quilting friend emailed me directions. Quilters are the greatest. I made an ornament last night and have lots of Christmas scraps out to make more. My daughter suggested putting a photo transfer on some of them for "windows". |

I have a better idea, why don't you post them? I would love to have them too. And I bet a lot of others would like them also.

I have to make an ornament for our quilt guild ornament exchange by next Wed and I have no clue what to make - until I saw those ones. Yes, can you post the directions, please! Violet I've decided to live forever - so far, so good.

The directions I have for these are very long, so I'm going to try to simplify and tell how I have made my latest ones. Anyone who can add to my directions to better explain, please feel free to do so. If you've never seen how a cathedral quilt is put together, it would probably help if you do a google search for "cathedral window quilt" so you can see illustrations of how the unit is put together. I did find info for a quilt, just not the ornaments. The instructions I have call for two 6 1/2" squares for the outer part and one 2" square for inside the "window". I tried several different sized squares and like the ones with 8 1/2" squares best. You can use almost any size for the outer squares. I just measured the "window" opening for the size of the smaller square that I needed and then cut them. Take one of your larger squares and fold it right side together in half. Pin and stitch on both short ends with a 1/4" seam allowance. Press seams open. Match the seams together along the open edges and pin. Stitch 1/4" seam, leaving a small opening for turning right side out. Turn the square right side out and stitch opening closed. (after a couple of ornaments I left this part out since it won't show anyway) Be sure to turn the points all the way out. You'll have a double layered fabric square now. Press. With the seamed side up, fold all four corners in toward the middle of the square. You will now have an even smaller square. PRESS very well to set in the creases. After you do both squares this way, pin them together, back to back, folds on the outside. Stitch on two opposites sides along the crease lines. You can stitch this by hand or machine. Hand tack the points of the folds together in the centers. You'll now have a tube. Roll the tube til the side seams line up in the middle. At this point, I slip stitch one end closed to form a little pillow. Now cut a square to go in your "window". Place a small square on the on-point square and pin. Roll down the edges of the "window" and stitch it to cover the edges of your center fabric square. It's cute to use a plainer fabric for the outer squares and a novelty fabric for the windows. When you stitch the windows on both sides, stuff the ornament with fiberfill and slip stitch the other end closed. Tack a ribbon loop at one corner for a hanger and add a bow at the top if you wish. I think a tassel at the bottom would be cute too. Good luck with my directions. It would be easier for me to show you than to try to explain it. |

Bama, Thank you very much for posting the directions for the ornament. I have made two and found some fabric for some more. I printed pictures of my twin GDs for one and will give it to them for their tree. I have had a lot of fun with this project and found the directions very clear and easy to follow. Thank you again and Merry Christmas. Luv2sew Luv2sew

You're welcome. I'm glad you had fun with this project. I've been wondering about all of you that were working on these ornaments. My computer has been down since before Thanksgiving and I was starting to have withdrawals. I've made several of them and everybody loves them. I added beads to some of them. I'm thinking about making a few after Christmas using non-Christmasy fabrics and leaving them out all year. I have a shelf with pegs for hanging things. |

Bama, Sorry about your computer problems and glad you are back with us. Our thoughts are going in the same direction about making them after Christmas. They will make nice gifts throughout the year. I have a new neighbor who may just get one. Did not think about putting beads on them though, good idea. Thank you. Luv2sew

I hope this will be allowed. I am new & not quite sure of the "yes & no" of this forum. At the request of friends needing instructions to make Cathedral Windows & really finding none that was good for beginners or longtimers, I set up a site, complete with visuals, on making Cathedral Window Quilts. I do not really post there but it is a "classroom". if you can find this useful, please feel free to use for your own use! The size of your "window" is determined by the size of the square you begin with. Anyway, if this is allowed, hope this helps anyone needing directions. http://groups.msn.com/CathedralWindow---Classroom101/homepage TeXas |
