Hi, I don't know if this is the correct place to ask this, but I am really having trouble fitting these sleeves. I didn't realize the sleeves are extended, although I did read that they are tight. I measure a V, but drew the W so wouldn't be so tight altogether and an X for the sleeves. I cut out in fabric (yucky kind), but the sleeves were better, but are dropped down off my shoulder and pro. need the underarm cut out? I would really rather make them into a set-in sleeve. Would I take maybe a 1/2 in off the shoulder and what? I pro. haven't given enough info, except my upper arm largest width is 14 1/2 and forearm 10 1/2. I also think I need to add the 1/4 inch to the back of sleeve and move dot 1/4-1/2 inch? I've read so much that I feel frozen to even try anymore! Could someone help me? Should I lay a sleeve I like over the bodice armhole and sleeve height, etc? I am totally lost! I only had enough of this material to test the back and the right front and cut out about 4 sleeves by now. I don't know how in the world you people can fit a tissue paper sleeve in a tissue arm-hole. Mine never feel like they fit and tear easily. Should I just give up on Sewing? Ha ha |

No, you should not give up on sewing! Pin-fitting a pattern is a good strategy, but as you have learned, it gets dicey when you start with the sleeve/armscye. That's when you'd do better using a muslin and a basting stitch. Do you think you might like to look for a book in your library? I kind of know how to adjust armscyes and the shoulder shape, but I think you'd do better with an expert's help than mine! Plus, they give you the good diagrams to work with. You can make a perfect one with a tiny bit of know-how, not rocket science, and a french-curve (fancy sewing ruler). Then you can adapt that pattern into most any design you like and make it fit you right every time.

This is what I was thinking of. I took a mini-class with Peggy Sagers at an expo last month and it was great. Once you go to this link, scroll down a little for Pattern Basics. pattern basics video (http://silhouettepatterns.com/books.htm) Andrea

That would be just perfect. I have one of her videos, but think I should have ordered this one first. It's not in the budget this week, but it's on my list to get! Thank you, Deb |

Are you making the cross over top with the longer or the cap sleeves? I've made the short sleeve version only, What if you cut the cap in the size of the body pattern and then grade the sleeve width to where you wish it to be OR cut the sleeve to the size of the body pattern (ie both a w) and then slash and spread the sleeve body to get it where you would like it. I don't think pin fitting will work well with this pattern b/c it is designed for a stretch knit and actually has negative ease. Hope this helps. Jeanette

Thank you so much. I think that is what I will do, but I didn't even think about going back to the original size. Thank you for reminding me to do that! I will try just doing that first. Maybe the extended (really drop shoulder on me) sleeve won't bother me as much if it at least isn't so tight! I plan on doing that today. I have a tendency to just leave a bothersome project for awhile and I could get so much more done if I just plowed ahead. You gave me that boost. Thank you. Deb |
